I like the pure mage concept but for me i think the game penalize's you for just going down one path strictly, i personally go warrior/knight to begin with then add in the magic later. Using this method you have the armor to outlast them and kill them with magic. Although that's just my view.
pure mage going it alone without anyback up requires some heavy skill. my battlemage needs careful planning before any encounter for me to survive but a big chunk of health is normally gone. every encounter.
do the companion questline. It's fun, and you have backup. plus you get a cool dragon shout (fire breath) then i would go and do the main questline, civil war, college of winterhold, dark brotherhood and the thieves guild. That's my order currently but you don't have to stick to it.
You will find that you die alot without any armour. The way around this for a "pure mage" is to have a tank like lydia or another similar character.
You might then want to learning heal other or some crowd control spells like fear, any of the wall spells.
