Speech and lockpicking are the most useless.

wow thx for the responses guys :) im glad i only spent one point in speech and i definitely will get one point on the steath thing. do you guys think getting the magicka reduction perks are useful? im kinda torn since i hear you can enchat stuff for less magicka costs? Also which tree side should i take for twin shadows for congeration? they both seem really useful. Also do master spells need the dual cast since i think i've read somewhere they need both hands?
Destruction Dual Casting doesn't work with any of the Master Spells, nor does Conjuration, despite using both hands. As for 100% Destruction/Conjuration, that fills most of your Slots with Extra Effect. If you're going to do it, I'd go for Destruction, because that's the one you tend to spam over, and over. I'd take Atromancy over necromancy to Twin Souls. None of them work on the most powerful Summon (Dremora Lord) except for Summoner, but it's definitely handy being able to cast them further away, because they run so slow.

At the end of the main quest in Dragonborn, you can refund all the perks on a tree at the cost of two dragon souls (I always have about 30-40 extra dragon souls anyways). So, you can make a new character and put perks in to simply getting money as quickly and as easily as possible, then turn down the difficulty and go to Solstheim where you can whack [ANTAGONIST]'s butt and refund the perks and create your dream character with 2,000,000+ septims.

im trying to main conjuration and destruction a pure mage and im a high elve :)

Well, if you're focusing primarily on those two, then take the middle branch of enchanting, all of it, you'll need the last perk to have double effects on whatever you enchant, which you'll need to make your reduction costs decrease as much as possible.

Necromancy perks are quite useful especially with the Dawnguard download content. The new spells from Soul Cairn benefit from the Necromancy perks. The Aetherial Crown with the Ritual stone allows you to use that stones power as many times as you want, by removing the crown and putting it back on, this will allow you to raise up a large undead army, giants, mages, warriors, spiders, bears, trolls. Every time you kill something you add it to your forces.

Duel casting perk in destruction is great since it will stagger enemies, allowing you to constantly hit them and keep them staggering while your summons deal with them. Restoration will come in handy, since lesser ward blocks all dragon breath attacks even on legendary dragons. The ward absorb will be useful if you know how to use wards properly and are able to time it. It also works with that daedric artifact shield that casts up a ward. Necromage in Restoration is a good one to get as it allows all spells to be more effective against undead and in Skyrim undead is one of the main things you face.

Being a Mage generally all schools are useful, Illusion with the right perks you can pacify a dragon priest. Fear is fun also, who doesn't like watching enemies run away from you in fear.

All right, look. This is a starter build for a relative newby. perhaps it would be counterproductive to spam him to death with all the possible exploits we can think of from the Vanilla game, and both DLCs, eh? I know, the Black book at the end of the newest one which as far as I can tell is leveled for high tier players with at least 30 under their belt, and some experience with the combat/perk tree system.

For now, concentrate on learning the Vanilla game, then when you've got Magicka management, evasion, and perk selection down, you can start thinking about Double Enchanting for 2 free schools, using Crown, and Book glitches from the DLCs, and stunlocking with Impact. (Dual Casting doesn't do that by itself, just gives you 10% more damage for 40% more magicka, so as worded, that was bad advice.)

Learn to play the game first, then use us ole' timers to Break it.

I avoid Speech alltogether. All it gets you is more money (I never run out) and better odds on Trust/Intimidate/Bribe rolls. Go ahead, and work it up for better prices, then spend the points on something that does Damage. I know, some people have said there are no "useless" perks, but in Destruction, Runemaster is about as close as you can get. In Conjuration, all Dual Casting gets you is longer duration. All of those spells last long enough for your magicka to recover anyway, so skip it. Enchanting, I use Magical Weapons to train it up with Petty Soul Gems. If you get Soul Squeezer, then you don't get as much Experience that way, and have to make it up cranking out more shoes of Muffle, and hats of Waterbreathing. At the end, when you've got your full set double enchanted, and 100 Enchanting, then you might want to think about Soul Squeezer.
because of dragonborn you can now reset your perks exchange for a dragon soul, merchant is worth getting though so yh

The only pickpocket perk that's worth anything to me is the extra pockets, unfortunately I have to use 2 other perks to get to it. I use a couple on the speech tree, but I only go up to investor, and I never use the other side of the tree. Everyone is right about sneak, no need to bother past that first 20%, but I do go for the extra damage with bows on that tree as the bow is my favorite sneak attack weapon, otherwise I tend to be a Melee specialist.

I agree. Speech is pretty useless & I've got 10 characters & only used the left side of the enchant tree once,& I only put 1 in fire. I did put the perk in speech that reduces price on the opposite sex once when I 1st started playing, but realized that there are a bizillion "free" ways to reduce price. Joining the Thieves Guild for one gets you a Hood with 10% discount & there is a amulet of Zenithar or even praying to Zenithar for that matter. But it does boil down to your taste in the end. For me, when I was new I tryed a lot of things I think are useless now.so........

"Hope for everything, expect nothing."

Yes, you are right. Like I said its up to you in the end, but as you get farther for example my dark elf, yesterday went to shop after delving into 2 ruins & saving for awhile & went shopping with over 80 thousand bucks. I took 8 master destruction trainings, 2 conjure, 3 resteration & bought a bunch of merch & still left with almost 60 thousand :D I also am Lvl 60 & the leader of the Thieves Guild, which has perks for free I don't wanna mention & ruin for you. Geeze.......not to mention all the merch I couldn't sell.

"Hope for everything, expect nothing."

I know, it's been said multiple times, and I've already commented that that's great, for someone who's beaten the game AND the DLC. This guy (The Original Poster) is just starting out, and doesn't have even a general idea how to pick skills the first time around. And yet, the Ur advice is to save money with Speechcraft, spend 20$ on Dragonborn, beat that, and then reset Speech after it's no longer an issue. I'm just not sure how well though out this plan is.

I personally wouldn't use something so great for something so lame as getting discounts at shops, and giving them more money, so you have the money to take advantage of your Discounts at shoppes. Yay, now how does that help him at the beginning of the vanilla game? I know, you can buy Ingots to level up Smithing to forge, and Temper Daedric weapons to finally do more damage. AT THE END OF THE GAME. I suggest you save your gamebreaking spoilers until then.

um atleast i diddnt say how or why you reset your perks so hows that a spoiler?

It's for a DLC that he doesn't even have yet, and it's the final Prize for completing that same DLC. Regardless of whether you consider it a spoiler, or not, it's moot advice, since he's just starting out, and it applies to the game after the game he's just starting.

the best advice is trial and error. learn from it. I started as a new player. I only played morrowind on PC and I used console for everything, since my pc won't handle Skyrim, I bought it for Xbox. Now my char was easy, kick ass with swords. and later on archery.

just read the perks 3 times and really think: Do I need this?

You will make mistakes, but who doesn't? maybe it's a comfort knowing that if you screw up bigtime, the Dragonborn DLC is an option! or Save before you pick a perk!

Yeah, depends on your play style. I have a tank orc, 100 in smithing, enchanting, and either one or two handed. Thats all you need to over powered. Insane legendary weapons and armor with double enchantments. All my other perks are just scattered. I have full speech, because I do allot of buying and selling. So it's useful to me even though I no longer need any money for any reason. I have a few in block(which I never use, my armor takes hits all day easily), archery ect.

And all my weapons, other gear, and enchantments are all insanely powerful with no exploits. So honestly, just choose what you like.

everything in lockpicking, , just save before and keep practicing, you will work it out eventually.
speech is not to good either, but i have maxed all of it once due to the character i was playing.
as most have said, only choose the first perk in sneak, that of course if you want to sneak, remember its your build, experiment, learn by mistakes, that way it will be more fun whilst learning for the next build you do,, believe me you will do lots of builds when restartitis sets in .. ;)

only thing i would say is if you are new, concentrate on a melee build character first, either one handed or 2 and then just go from there, learning and enjoying as you go, IMHO.

well thats my 2 cents chaps. .. ..
