I've lived in the States and Finland, so I have two cultural points of reference. However, my place of residence in the US was the Bay Area in California, an area known for its liberal atmosphere and open mindedness, so my perception of life in the US may be biased in a way. But hey, it was California! I was mostly focused on enjoying the laid-back, sun-drenched side of it, seeing the natural wonders, and yes, even the grandeur of its big cities. Of course I absorbed the mainstream culture and media as well, willingly or unwillingly, and through that medium my perception of America as a nation was shaped (that, and I visited a multitude of other states as well).

As a few posters above have already pointed out, the influence of American mainstream pop culture is very invasive; it's impossible to ignore or escape. I try to turn a blind eye to the distasteful aspects of it such as the quasi-religious idol worship of spoiled pop/movie stars, sports figures and other such individuals, and only absorb what I personally find appealing. That includes music (ignoring most of the mainstream flavor of the month crap), movies and video games.

Based on everything I've seen and read, the entertainment industry and media in the US exists mostly to keep people distracted from the things that are truly relevant, the big social changes that are slowly being ushered in by the powers that be. It's unbelievably easy for those in positions of power to get away with murder, real or figurative, when everybody is looking the other way, or more precisely, staring blankly with glazed eyes and not seeing what is going on right in front of their eyes. It's almost like they've managed to breed us into a new, inferior form of humanity, a collective hive-mind of brainless, sugar binging, idol worshipping, materialistic, instant gratification seeking human zombies. Makes sense when you think about it: a nation of enlightened, empowered people with a healthy sense of purpose and identity would be much harder to control than a drooling pack of mindless drones.

But I digress :p I find many flaws in the American way of life and its influence outside of its borders, but it's not all bad. If we put aside the crooked politics, media and pop culture, it is a place of great natural beauty and man made marvels.
Finland, in many ways, emulates everything America does. It's like America junior on ice :D There are innumerable things here I'd like to change, too.. it's far from a paradise. It's tolerable, but I sometimes entertain the thought of living somewhere else.

I didn't understand half of that :p

I wonder if anyone else did, either :p
I always understand everything you say Monolith. I can even understand the words left unspoken in the deepest places of your heart.

Why change the past when you can own this day?
This nation has a lot of awesomeness, put its buried in stupidity. Just look at a news stand or a corner store. Magazines upon magazines about celebs, who they are dating, their break ups and drama. Why not cover more stories lik, oh I don't know, The sudden spikes in school shootings? People are so oblivious its gross. We worship celebs, rap stars, tv figures, even some musicans, like false idles and tv gods. Haha I even wrote a song called fasle idles and tv gods that was about this topic. Instead of helping each other we snap and try to eat each other. Look at that girl who was gang r*ped and she was made fun of by guys and girls by saying "she liked it" or that she was a slut. A few days she hung herself. Look at the sudden influx of school shootings! sure its on the news here and there, but why is it not actually examined! Come on there has been 16 mass school shootings in 2012. Why is that? They are in quick succession of each other. I am going to skip over our president and what I think of him so I don't start a fight. Anyways, back to the topic. I love my country, but that doens't mean I have to love our cult following of stupidity.

Now to music. As a musican this BOTHERS me! We LOVE pop and rap. Most pop and rap has no real meaning at all. I will listen to a genre before saying that. Most rap is about money, drugs, woman( more like in a sense of a object than a person) and pop is this sugar coated view of everything! This does not take good song writing skill! You want to see superb song writing? Look up Nick Cave and the bad seeds or Grinderman. Hell most of his stuff is fantastic. Also Robert Smith, Jim Morrison, Thurston Moore. I could go on and on. What he have now is some great bands buried under BS thats called music! Nick Cave writes about dark, but true things about humans and how we work. He writes about religion but in a dark view. We need more artists like cave, smith, morrison, cohen, moore, and so on. People who draw attention at how messed up america is. Look at the punk movement. Prime example. No we got all this minaj, Fun., Screamo, most bad pop, etc

Now for people, we make fun of people with "disabilites", we are also sexist, stupid, ignorant. Now this is some people of course! We expect the whole world to speak english for us. We act self entitled, and some of us can't accepted other religions, sexual differences, or cultural differences. Some christians let their religion dictate how they live.

As much as you guys are brilliant I'm going to rant here, so I do apologise if I offend you. I'll try and put this simply:
  • Fox News and the GOP: This is everything that is wrong with America... Everything!
If Fox News and the GOP were none existent you would have much greater world respect.
I don't like the whole 'police the world' thing you have going on. It also doesn't help when it's said (I'm British and our government was just as bad) over Iraq that 'We're not in this for the oil' and yet in a week of the new Iraqi government being set up the oil was privatised and leases were sold to British, American and French countries. The argument that democracy was being brought to Iraq is also invalidated by the fact that America props up the Saudi Arabian royal family (Most of Al-Qaeda are Saudi) which has horrible human rights issues, and the main profit for the Americans is... oh yes, cheap oil.
There's the fact that during the 2012 presidential election people were practically worshipping Paul Ryan for the fact that he proposed 'austerity' as an economic plan as if it was genius and wouldn't fail in any way. yet we have austerity and risk a triple dip recession and have lost our triple-A credit rating.
There's also GOP logic on freedom
  • We want a small government- But with a huge military
  • We want peoples freedoms to be exercised- unless its telling gay people they can't marry or that women can't have an abortion
What I hate about GOP/ Fox News- everything has to ultimately benefit the rich and if someone even partially disagrees they're a Stalinist/ Socialist/ Communist/ Marxist... geez they're running out of left wing terminology to use.
Everything else is wonderful, you guys are great. It's just the tw*ts at the top... as always.
