I especially liked your post about Hrisskar's inventory, I was really curious about your equipment choices. The amount of time and energy you spend cleaning out caves and baddie locations makes every one seem like an epic dragon horde! Love it!!

Thanks! I had been considering this for a long time as I thought you guys might be interested in what I was actually using. I just wanted to find a fun way to post about it. I still can't believe I'm using so much gear that doesn't have magical abilities, on master and at level 21. But it's just so hard to come by good stuff in dungeons or stores (that I can afford).

And yes, hauling gear from caves and whatnot is like an epic adventure on it's own half the time, lol.

This morning I set out from Winhelm to try and locate the kahjit whose amulet I now possess. My hope was that he would be camped outside Dawnstar where I originally met him, but he wasn't there the last time I was in Dawnstar so my hopes were not high.

The trip was mostly uneventful, although I did get to watch a party of thalmor obliterate a spider. They left it beside the road after so I happily filled up a spare vial with it's poison. You can never have too many poison potions I've learned.

As expected I reached Dawnstar and the kahjit was not there. I suppose I'll hang onto the amulet until I see him again. Hopefully he and his clan haven't left Skyrim or met an ill fate.

With no other pressing business I decided to go explore along the coastline east of Dawnstar. I had been told months ago of a shipwreck out there, and thought it might be worth checking out. I'm really hoping to find some enchanted gauntlets or a helmet sometime soon to aid me in battle.

I found the shipwreck after an hour or so. It was a very large vessel, much larger than I was expecting. It was late in the day, though, so I decided to look inside tomorrow. I also found another boat nearby, a very small one. I may use this to explore some of the nearby islands.

On the way back I came across some arrows in the snow. My spine tingled a bit as I knew this was a sign that some sort of fight had gone on nearby. I guided Dawn carefully through the trees and discovered the body of a hunter facedown in the snow. There was a camp just beyond him with a nice fire going. It was obvious his death was recent. I also noticed that there were three bedrolls around the fire. So there were likely two other hunters nearby.

And then an arrow struck Dawn in the hip. I looked up with a start, and saw another hunter atop a hill aiming his second arrow. I dug my heels into Dawn's side and turned her around, just barely causing the second arrow to miss us. I wasn't sure why this hunter was attacking me. Perhaps he thought I was responsible for his friend's death? Perhaps they were just territorial? Perhaps he had gone crazy and killed his friend and now I was next on his list?

I rode around at the bottom of the hill for a bit, taking in the camp and looking for the third hunter. If he was also dead I wanted to know. If he was still alive .. I wanted to know. It was about this time that I noticed the hunter lying face down in the snow was not a hunter after all. Judging from his clothing and armor he was obviously a highwayman. A thief. And with the road to Morthal just a hundred paces away it made total sense for their camp to be right here, tucked out of side behind a rocky hill.

Knowing this information, I decided to confront the bandit rather than ride off and leave him be. So I stowed Dawn out of sight behind some trees and then worked my way up the hill to the bandit. I had to dodge and weave like a butterfly to avoid his arrows, but in a short time I was upon him.

My initial plan was to simply bash him off of the rocky cliff with my shield, and let the fall do all the work for me. But as I knocked him over the side he was able to land on a ledge below. From there he was began shooting arrows at me again, so I dropped down to the ledge and knocked him off of that as well. But again he landed on another ledge. This bandit was smarter than I had thought.

I dropped down again and this time went to work on him with my mace. He countered back with his dagger, but between my blocking and striking he didn't stand much of a chance. Within a few minutes he attempted a surrender. I know better than to let a thief yield to me, though, so I ended his life right then and there with quick smash of my mace.

After collecting what I could carry from the camp I headed back to Dawnstar for the night. I had considered just staying at the camp, but I couldn't account for the third bandit. I know the bandits had been attacked by wolves, as I found the bodies of two of the dead beasts. But it's possible there was a third wolf and the third bandit chased it off into the surrounding area. If he returned and caught me asleep in their camp I would be dead for sure.

It's a good thing I headed back to town when I did. On the way back I came across a dog that was lost. I got down from Dawn and gave it some attention and a bit of food and it's now following me everywhere. I don't know if came from the bandit camp or somewhere else, but he seems pretty fond of me now. I'll need to come up with a name for him tonight.

I awoke this morning to discover that my new furry friend was gone. I looked all over Dawnstar, but he was gone. I suppose it's good I was too tired to come up with a name for him last night.

With my morning spent looking for a dog, I set out to spend my afternoon investigating an old shipwreck. On the way to the shipwreck I happened to pass the bandit camp nearby and just happened to stumble upon the body of the third bandit. With confirmation of his death I may now choose to spend the night at their camp tonight. I'm not fond of spending nights in Dawnstar, a place with a reputation for nightmares.

I spent a few hours aboard the old ship; killed a few mudcrabs and found a book and some gold. It was eerie being inside something so large and empty. I got shivers when I walked past some old beds. There were a few candles lit and a lamp down below decks, so i'm certain that someone is using the ship. Probably outlaws. Of course, I'm an outlaw now as well I suppose.

Eventually I came across a door that was locked. It was a heavy and reinforced door, and there was no way I was going to knock it down. With no key and no ability to pick the lock, I was forced to leave the ship with little to show for my efforts. Then again, who knows what was behind that door. Perhaps the gods were favoring me today by having it locked. The entire undead crew of the ship might be behind that door. I'm fine with leaving them in peace.

So with darkness encroaching on the sky, I headed back to the camp of the three bandits. The wind had picked up and it was biting cold. The wind is always colder over here, coming off of the icy water of the bay. It was cold enough I actually considered going back to Dawnstar for the night.

But what is worse, cold toes and fingers or wretched nightmares?

I'll sleep in the camp tonight.

More great posts.

I must suggest Mercurio in Riften (Bee and Barb) if you ever hire another mercenary (you may have already done so, I have not read your last two entries. This guy is deadly with his spells!

I'm a fan of Marcurio too - he's a silly guy. When he's not whining about the cold, threatening to throw up or complaining about carrying your junk, he's boasting about his magical prowess and knowledge of ancient history (which he never elaborates on). I was heartbroken when he died on one of my characters. So much so that I ended up starting an entirely new game.

The only thing I really and truly dislike about his character is his soul patch. That...just makes him look like a total and complete douchebag. But, as that is a faucet of his character, I can't say it hasn't grown on me.

I won't say never, but I think right now Hrisskar has a bad taste in his mouth after his last companion disappeared on him and then wanted more money to join up again. d;-)

Whew, finally caught up after reading the story all weekend! I can tell you, as soon as I read the first two pages, I wanted to start my character like this! I hope you keep up the work!

You totally should! I started Skyrim with a different character and played him until level 20 or so before I decided I wanted to do something different ... which led to this. I still haven't done the main quest, lol. I'm just playing as if I lived in the world, instead of trying to finish the game. It's been really liberating to play this way.

Anyways, thanks for the post and hope you continue to enjoy Hrisskar's adventures. It's only going to get more interesting I think. d;-)

I sure hope it does!! I just started my character Sunday night and it is a lot more difficult this way! I have played all the TES since Morrowind and have played through Skyrim a few times now, just playing the main story and the large quests like Civil War and the guilds. Now this is ridiculous!

If you see a Bosmer with nothing but a dagger a pickax and his prisoner garb wandering aimlessly, make sure you say hi! ;)

It's been a long and interesting day.

I awoke in the bandit camp as dawn broke. The bitter cold made me want to stay in bed. I could never live in this part of Skyrim. I may be a nord but I truly dislike the sting of snow being blown against my face.

Somehow I forced myself from the relative warmth of my bedroll and got prepared to leave the camp. I ate the fish that the bandits had caught, as well some bread I had, then mounted Dawn and rode out toward the road to Windhelm.

As I crested the hill near the road I caught sight of a kahjit caravan making their way to Dawnstar. My pulse quickened. Could this be the caravan with the kahjit whose amulet I carry? I urged Dawn into a faster trot and caught up with the band of travelers.

kahjitcaravan.jpg

Sure enough, the kahjit was among them. His name was Kharjo, and he was ecstatic that I had his amulet. After giving me some gold as a reward, he assured me that if I ever needed him he would fight by my side. I thought this over for a bit, and decided we may as well journey together to a cave near Morthal where I knew some drunken sailors had lost a shipment of void salts. He agreed to leave his friends and help me with this quest. I felt honored that he would do this for me. Then again, I spent several weeks recovering from injuries and more than a month fighting in a cave to retrieve his amulet.

We left the caravan behind and traveled the road to Morthal. I had to slow my usual pace since I'm on horseback and Kharjo is walking. This also meant we became easier targets for whatever else we happened to come across. At first this was just a pack of wolves .. and then another. But then it was a giant we had to avoid .. and then a bear.

Finally we came across a highwayman with a large sword who attacked us on sight. On any other day I would have galloped away, but I couldn't do that today. I had to help Kharjo survive. Even with the two of us pounding on this criminal with our maces it took us a good while to bring her down. She had killed a mage who was traveling by cart, so we took what we could from both of them.

At this point we had about as much as we could carry, so it made no sense to continue to the cave. We needed to sell off what we had and then head back out. So it was back to Dawnstar for us.

We avoided the bear once again, and the giant as well. And then, about an hour later, we came across a noble with an imperial guard escort. My first thought was to attack and kill them, but as a man with bounties in two holds now I decided it might not be in my best interest no matter how much I hate the imperials.

So I decided instead to just ride past them and leave them be.

But as I rode past the imperial recognized me, likely from some outlaw poster he had seen hanging in an inn somewhere. Despite being outnumbered the imperial drew his sword and demanded that I pay my bounty and come with him. I almost wanted to kill him just for the stupidity of drawing a weapon against us.

But ultimately I realized that if Kharjo and I killed this imperial we would both end up with ransoms in this hold. I didn't feel right putting Kharjo in that position, and that left only one option.

So a thousand gold lighter we spent the rest of the day making our way to Whiterun. Luckily we were not thrown in jail, and only had to pay the bounty. That means tomorrow we are free to head back to the cave. And honestly, I prefer the route from Whiterun over the route from Dawnstar anyways.

FYI for those following the journal. I've updated the play restrictions in the original thread.

- I'm switching to eating 3 meals a day instead of 5% health per day ... feels like better roleplaying.

- Also decided that if I die I will just stay at an inn for 7 days and spend 300 gold with the innkeep, versus trying to figure out the exact number of meals and costs, etc. I'm assuming here that the innkeep took care of me and I'm just repaying them.

- I made a few other minor revisions to the layout of my rules and such, but that's about it I think.

... really wanted to switch to Expert instead of Master, lol ....

One quick question, how do you take your in game shots? If I remember reading correctly somewhere, you are on a 360. Do you take pics with a camera or phone, or do you have a screen capture card?

Unfortunately I have to do it with my phone since I'm on the Xbox. It's a pain but it is what it is.
