there really should be a third option to convince Balgruff to throw his hat in the ring to control Skyrim.

Balgruff Wasn't entirely sure who to side with in the civil war, the empire would feel he would be a potential danger if put on the throne even though he swore alligence with them, they won't risk another Ulfric

question, we know a thief/ranger would side with the empire for business reasons, but what reasons are there for a thief to side with the stormcloaks?

call me "DJ" or "Dragonflame"
Personally,

My main character is based on being an adventurer and setting sites on exploration, not so fond with joining up with any of them.

I made another character that also doesn't interfere with them because she's my main character's arch-enemy long before they came into Skyrim. Also, she definitely has a license to kill whoever crosses her path (hint: DB), especially faking to be nice to be a Companion just to be a werewolf again to get revenge against my main character.

In other words, they are both neutral towards those factions. :p

I personally joined the Stromcloaks. Why? well after playing the DB quests and becoming an assassin something sparked in my selfish dark and shadowy assassin heart. I loved Skyrim and since i did 'that'' thing with the DB, i felt the Empire crumbling and i thought that only an united Kingdom outside of the Empire could keep its head up. It could ally, by stepping over racism with argonians, the Khajjit and orcs against the Aldmeri Dominion(i hate the high elves but love the wood elves). And after all Ulfric was nice to me and seemed to care a lot about his nords(based on the dialogues with Galmar).

1 kingdom (Skyrim) vs an alliance of 3 kingdoms (Aldmeri Dominion). Not gonna end well for the single kingdom. Not at all.

It could ally, by stepping over racism with argonians, the Khajjit and orcs against the Aldmeri Dominion

The Khajiit are with the Aldmeri Dominion (except a few outsiders like the caravan travelling across Skyrim, but there aren't many of them). Argonians have taken the upper hand in both Black Marsh and Southern Morrowind and are led by a ruling family/faction which hates everything except Argonians if I remember correctly (or at the very least, they hate Dunmer).
Orcs are somewhere scattered within Imperial territory because High Rock and Hammerfell teamed up to kick their little kingdom out of existence.

Skyrim doesn't have anyone to ally with except for maybe Hammerfell, which is quite a task geographically though. Wouldn't matter though, because by the time they'd team up Aldmeri troops would have taken Cyrodiil I guess. Nothing left to save if that happens.

Perhaps you are right but it seemed the best choice giving the options (the empire was clearly crumbling after what i did and also before what i did it. The empire does not seem to be able to defend its self greatly now and Skyrim is going to die if it stays with the empire ). I've said all this but as a final thought i think the outcome of the coming war is situational either way . there are so many things that could happen... so it doesn't really matter what i've chosen, it matters the fact the i had fun fighting alongside the Stormcloaks

Sahdira chooses the Empire. She and her family are citizens of Cyrodiil and owe the Empire a great deal. It was the Empire that freed Sahdira's grandmother from a life of slavery.
