Clearly Harkon's Blade is a much better choice. All the Mace of Molag Bal does is damage stamina and magicka, as well as soul traps the afflicted target. The sword on the other hand absorbs health, stamina, and magicka. Plus it doesn't take up one-third the size of the screen like the mace does. Therefore, Harkon's Blade is the more ideal choice for a vampire build.

I just wish they would fix Keening so that it would hold magical charges.

Nothing else looks quite like it .
It`s the dagger equivalent to Harkon`s sword which if functional could be used by a non-vampire as well.

I've heard a rumor that if you wear 100% destruction cost reduction gear, making weapons not require expending charges, that Keening actually works! I have not personally tested it. It's hearsay on the UESP: Skyrim:Keening - UESPWiki

well . i`ve got the gear thanks to the Atronach Forge and Radiant Rainment so I`ll try it out.
still just an attractive novelty piece since it can`t be tempered but may become a cool tool for stealth atttacks or dual-wielded with Harkon`s blade if you`re a vampire

it`s true !
it`s weak in physical damage but the enchantments do indeed work with 100% cost reduction gear equipped.
visual effect is multi-colored dots being absorbed from the victim.
tested on various level bandits at Knife Point Ridge(master setting) , I got no instant sneak kills and it took more than a few power attacks with the dagger to finally slay them.
while fighting a highwayman he ran from me and cowered , I used my Shadow Warrior move to get in a sneak attack and was rewarded with a sweet throat-slitting animation with Keening !
thx again for the tip

btw my vote is for the Mace of Molag Bal even if it is oversized

more physical damage
damage enchantments effective against both mages and physical foes
soul trap !

Vampires already have a powerful Drain Life spell they should be using to get their kills(and VL perks) because I don`t think kills with Harkon`s sword count toward those perks(confirm?)

I also prefer the personal weapon of the god of vampires. I love the Mace of Molag Bal and think it belongs in the hands of a vampire lord. Harkon's sword is pretty decent too but it is not the weapon of the lord of vampires. Along with the Black Star, I can easily keep it charged because just killing things charges it. I wonder why Bethesda didn't have the mace absorbing health since it is the weapon of the god of vampires?

Before Skyrim released, the Mace of Molag Bal always absorbed Strength and Magicka since the time of Daggerfall. The way I see it, his way of dominating a foe is to destroy their vital essence. Since Attributes don't exist in Skyrim, Damage Stamina(to Bethesda) was the best choice to compensate for this. Until Dawnguard, Bethesda didn't make direct reference to him being the creator of vampires. In fact, the first time any association(as far as I know) between the two was made in the Lamae Bal book, which first appeared in an Oblivion DLC(The Vile Lair).

I may have underestimated the power of Harkon`s Sword because I`m not a vampire and never used the blade.
Inspired by this thread , I got it out of mothballs for testing.

Improved to Legendary , first tested with the "cured" Serana , and as expected , the enchantments did not function for her now.

Snuck into the boss room of Bloodlet Throne and killed Volkihar Master vampire , Vighar.
Gave him Harkon`s Sword , raised him with Ritual Stone power , and he used the fully functioning weapon to wipe out all his minions.

Gave sword to a Volkihar from Ancestor Glade, raised with Dead Thrall spell, and she was devastation itself in destroying a group of powerful mages lead by a Master Vampire.

Gave it to a Mistwalker and she beat a much stronger Nightlord one-on-one !
