My guess would be slow striking. Try Bashing to stagger, when you get the chance. Don't hold down block, but tap it, then the attack button real quick. They won't hit you while they're staggered. Even an Orc in Heavy Armor can't just run in, and swing away without any thought to his own safety. Try not to get surrounded, use cover so you're not getting shot, and use the reach advantage. Most enemies can't hit you at the length of your warhammer, so back up, and hit them while they run in.

Here. This should help. Win first, and then fight.

Sun Tzu knew more about fighting than anyone ever will. He invented it. He perfected it so that no man would be better than him in the ring of honor.
Then he took his fight money and bought two of every kind of animal. Then he put them all on a boat, and beat the crap out of every single one of them.
That's why, today, when a bunch of animals get together, it's called a "zoo." Unless it's a farm.

If you're not role-playing too hardcore then grab a bow as well. Use sneak to remain undetected and take out as many enemies as possible with the bow before switching back to your warhammer. Also remember to make the most of poisons against tougher enemies (not draugr or dragons though). Otherwise Psiberzerker pretty much covered it. Also get The Art of War! :Dovahkiin:

- Learn the spacing and timing of the Warhammer. <----Playing in third person is good for this. If you have a target coming at you w/ a single handed weapon, there's little reason why they should land any hits on you as long as there is room to maneuver. In this situation use mostly standard hits.

- Don't allow yourself to be flanked. If you are, start back pedaling and the AI targets will fall into a single line, it will give you a few moments to concentrate on one target before they start gathering on you again.

- Bait your target towards you and then use backwards power attack. It crumples very often, and if you happen to get the spacing wrong, it's pretty safe ( you should have time to get your guard up).

Random left overs- Get your hands on resist x asap, zig- zag towards archers, use melee enemies as human shields against ranged enemies, defensive bashing is great, Great Critical Charge is a fun/ good opener, Level 1 unrelenting force is OP.

^ Tactics I learned playing on master.
