Reading a Halloween thread got me to thinking, so I figured I'd ask this question.

I personally cannot go out on Halloween day without dressing up just so people won't be scared of me nor thinking that I'm doing anything, and I just don't really care for nor do holidays in general (I don't even bother with my own birthday).

P.S. This isn't a complaint thread, and I'm not here to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do. I just figured I'd open up a different discussion altogether. ^.^

If I didn't have my 2 week summer holiday I would cry I work my ass off at work so to get out the country is a must. Over the passed few years I've done LA/Vegas, South France, Egypt and Turkey and if we get any Bank holidays it's a long weekend in Amsterdam. I agree about birthdays I'm normally always working so don't bother with it and if I can get away with working over Christmas I will where I work we get paid double time and a half so will always take the ££££. New Years I go all out though and if I can remember what I did it would be classed as a bad one.

I can understand wanting X-amount of days off, which I find completely different and something that I can support regardless. ^.~

You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.
Yeah, I'm usually too damn lazy to do anything about it. Though I do have a niece and nephew nearby, so I don't mind the Christmas thing with them. :)

What I mostly love the holidays for is when we get a day off or two from work. :beermug:

I for one can't stand the holidays because in the past it's been an occasion where I'm forced to get together with family members who are disruptive if not downright rude. It's noisy, annoying and stressful. I especially hated observing Christmas at work, because then I felt like a microscope was on my finances. Sorry boss, but you sign my paychecks. You ought to know that I can't afford to buy some gift for every other employee and you. I do that and I can't afford Christmas for the family members whom I enjoy spending time with.

I'm tighter than a ducks ass no-one at my work will be getting any presents off me. If there lucky they may get a Christmas card and that is about it.

I like Halloween (shameless horror fan). Thanksgiving is okay too, for the food. But Christmas is the "most horrible time of the year".

I don't like the idea of buying things for people (This is what the big corporations want people to do anyways) during the holidays. This may sound as if I'm being an asshole, but I'm struggling enough to pay the bills. Real friends and family should not expect friends/love ones to buy something for them anyways. I don't do Xmas , I don't do Easter and any of that religious holidays.

The only holiday that I truly appreciate are Fathers day, Mothers day and memorial days. It's nice to give our soldiers a day of our time to appreciate for what they do.

Oh and as far as Halloween goes...It's Diabeetus holiday. And I'm sure the dentists would love for you to rot your teeth with all that free candy that you got so they can charge you an arm and a leg to get a root canal done or a cavity either way.

doesn't the word "Holiday" imply that you get time off? Who gets time off work to celebrate Halloween???

I do love the idea of Halloween, but nobody in my area really makes an effort for it. There are no local parties or events going on, so I haven't bothered either. It also kind of gets ruined by all the christmas stuff that comes along so early - literally, as soon as September arrives, the christmas stuff comes out in the shops and there are adverts all over TV for the latest xmas catalogues and plops.

Not that I dislike christmas - my favourite part of the christmas holidays is decorating the house and seeing all the stuff that goes on. Not so much presents, i'm not really fussed about what gifts I get any more, but the decorations and the atmosphere that comes with the xmas holidays... we just don't get stuff like that very often so I'll make the most of it every December. It's just a shame that other special occasions don't get that much attention.

I don't dislike holidays in and of themselves, but what I don't like is the commercialism. I just hate it that in order to remain socially acceptable to others I practically am expected take out a loan to buy gifts. I'm not willing to do that so I'll just have to be a social pariah about it.

oh by the way, guys - you don't have to spend too much on my xmas present this year. Watches are nice, and maybe a new laptop...

I don't like holidays that require me to spend time with my family (sorry if that sounds bad). Outside of one aunt and one cousin (who isn't even my cousin, he's my cousins husband), I don't really like any of them. Christmas was a complete disaster last year on so many levels, and I'm always forced to talk to my family on Thanksgiving. Actually last year was the first time I was in charge of cooking something for Thanksgiving, and while I was cooking my older brother was hovering over my shoulder telling me what I was doing wrong, and when I told him to stop being such a backseat driver he said "I just don't want to talk to anyone else" lol.

maybe...
I dont mind the hoildays... I just hate the people :D

Working retail for 4 years at a toy store no less... you just end up hating the Oct-Dec months a lot November being the worst month for hoildays... Thats from an ex-retailer point of view...

Now as for the just the hoildays without shopping I like them... I like to see the deco that people put up on Halloween.. I enjoy seeing little kids in their costumes soo cute :D

November- Food... nuff said

December- I do like my family and spending time with them also the deco again... its amazing how some people go out of their way to dress there house up

Shiney, let's be bad guys.
Iv always been somewhat neutral on holidays. But since Ive had a Kid I enjoy them a lot more. Four year olds don't care about all the commercialized bs that we are accustomed to. It also helps that my wife's family are far better cooks than my own. I still cannot stand Christmas music for the most part. I worked at a pizza place that played non stop Christmas music from Nov 1 through New Years. You can only hear Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer so many times before you snap.

I have always enjoyed Halloween. It's a great excuse to watch horror movies. Plus taking kids trick or treating is a blast. Especially when my son who was dressed as Spider Man decided to start talking smack to the other super heroes.

I think as we get old, the "magic" of the holidays fades in us. Back then, we were the ones who got to participate in the festivities and didn't worry about creating them. Now, it's us trying to give our kids or others that special feeling we had as a child. Holidays as an adult are fun, but nothing like they used to be when I was a kid. Halloween was a huge event for me when I was growing up. Now, although it's my favorite holiday, the rush is gone. The joy I get out of the holidays is watching my kids face light up and knowing I did that. I made their day and created a memory for years to come. That and Michael Myers. ;)

The replies in this thread have tickled me glad I'm not the only one who doesn't enjoy Christmas. I got a mailshot from work today saying if you work on Christmas day they will pay us £45 an hour plus 3 days paid leave later on in the year it took me all of 30 seconds to put my name down. The only problem is my Mrs now wants some bloody ugg boots and a new i-pad to keep her sweet.

I myself don't even want any kids, and holidays is another one of the reasons why. If I were to have any kids, I'd wager the wife probably would be like "but it's just a white lie", "it's just for fun", etc. as I only ever really care for Thanksgiving or the Passover, and I'm not about to tell a kid that it's ever okay to lie since I don't find many things more immoral than lying.

Yeah, one of the reasons I even got associate of the month and pretty much became an assistant manager at one of the few "over-the-table" jobs I had was because I volunteered to work holidays. It was mad cash, and a nice record to have.

I've rather come to despise Christmas in recent years. It's a holiday that seems to turn 1/6th of the year into one long, big, black hole. It's two months of nearly-constant stress, not only at home but at work. In those months, I never quite have the time or energy to do anything productive besides prepare for Christmas. By the time the 25th arrives, I'm usually begging for it to just end already, please.

I love the religious aspects of the holiday. I love singing hymns at midnight on Christmas Eve. I have a great fondness for cooking Christmas dinner, as it's one of the only times of the year that I can really show off my culinary skills to people other than the people I live with. I like meeting up with family members that I haven't seen in months.

But the rampant, pervasive commercialism that saturates the entire country, I utterly despise. I hate the stress and cost of scrambling to assemble gifts in time. I hate the vapid, pointless songs that play over and over and over everywhere. The sickly sweet "Inspirational Christmas Specials" that have nothing to do with anything make me sick. I hate having to be so cheerful in front of customers when I'm normally feeling so sad by that time of year.

And underlying it all, every year since, I can't help but remember the saddest Christmas that I was ever a part of. It was about a month before my sister's death and she was horrifically ill. I believe that she knew that it was her last Christmas and we tried so hard to make it a good one. But she was so sick, so afraid, in so much pain and so angry. Beneath everything, I think that's what I'll always associate Christmas with. I see it as more of a time of mourning than of celebration and the rest of the world can never get it.

Then don't lie to the kids. Just tell them that Santa isn't real or the the Easter bunny is fake right off the bat. That's what we did. My daughter knows it's all pretend, but she still loves the stories and activities. My son is only 2 and he could care less about the Holidays and their meaning. You don't have to tell them it's real. My wife was told Santa was real when she was a kid and when she found out he was fake, she was devastated. She still remembers that to this day. We promised ourselves that our kids wouldn't feel that and they won't. All depends on if you want to spread the lie or not.

I don't celebrate Christ's Mass. I do enjoy the family dinner part of it though. I spent most of my adult life overseas, so I missed a lot.

As far as Santa and the Easter Bunny, I think this just primes the kids to believe in magic(gods). They can still enjoy the stories and activities just like they do with fairy tales. Nobody really expects them to believe in bears who eat porridge, right?
