The house they prefer!
Of the vanilla houses, my personal favorite is Proudspire manor in Solitude. It's the most expensive but it has three floors and it's nice looking on the outside and in. All of the houses have pros and cons though.
Breezehome (Whiterun; 5000 gold without add-ons) least expensive and has two floors, but it's in a great city with a lot of vendors and multiple blacksmiths. It doesn't have any mannequins either for armor display, and only a few places to display weapons. There's also a firepit in the middle of the living room, which can be good or bad depending on your view. Not exactly a fancy house but its homey and has a favorable location.
Honeyside (Riften; 8000 gold without add-ons): two floors and not much bigger than Breezehome. It's in Riften so its close to the Thieves Guild. There is a nice layout inside and it has a log cottage feel on the outside. There is a porch and dock in the back, which is unique as well because you can enter and exit the house through the city or through the outside. Also has a garden.
Vlindrel Hall (Markarth; 8000 gold without add-ons): dwemer architecture and made of stone. Nice view of the reach and access to Understone keep. Larger than Honeyside and Breezehome, has a lot of bookshelves but there isn't much space to display armor but plenty of display places for weapons/shields.
Hjerim (Windhelm; 8000 gold without add-ons): its in a little culdesac in Windhelm, near a few other houses. It's arguably better than Proudspire with a more spacious feel to it. There is a hidden room behind a fake wardrobe which is pretty cool. There are two floors, both of which are large and spacious. There is a nice setup/layout for displaying weapons and armor also.
Proudspire manor (Solitude; 25000 gold without add-ons): very expensive but worth it. It is located in the city and has three floors which is nice. The "basement" is really floor level, and the main entrance is up some steps. There is a balcony in the back with a view, but no garden. There is a nice enchanting room in the basement and a lot of spaces to put armor or weapons. On the top floor there is a small room with a table in it, and there's also a door that leads to the main bedroom. There's a kitchen, reading area, and sitting area in the middle floor, and the rooms aren't really separated by walls.
Hope this helps. If you were looking for a description of mods or of Hearthfire plots, this probably wasn't a great help though.
But honestly, I use Breezehome the most--it's in Whiterun so it's in a good central location for most of my characters' activities, and you only need about 7000-7300g to get it complete with furnishings. It just sucks a little because it is the smallest house, and can feel a bit cramp (especially with Lydia there all. the. time.) and it's the only house that doesn't have an enchanter.
