Alex seemed shocked at the question, and he walked behind the desk, clenching his fists. His knuckles turned white and his eyes began to well up. Abby got a little worried when he looked back up at her, tensed up and looking quite angry. But his response was reasonably calm.
"No."
Abby sighed sadly, going round to Alex's side of the desk and putting an arm round his shoulders.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked that; it's none of my business. But thank you for telling me." She rubbed his back gently, as Abby's mother had done when she cried, before she was dragged away. It had comforted her, so why shouldn't it comfort him? "I'm not going to say I know how you feel, because I don't. I can imagine, but I don't know." She didn't know what else to say, so she just kept rubbing his back and waited.
"No."
