Maybe it's a bit strong to say, but it's not totally inaccurate.
A new publisher in my region is looking for writers. Specifically, they're looking for romance writers, and while I've never considered romance one of my genres, I have dabbled, and I like to include it in some of my stories. When I sent them an e-mail to indicate my interest and to request more information, I linked them to some of the flash fiction I have hosted on my blog, and included a scene between Cordelia and Vorstag that will appear in my Skyrim fan fic, to illustrate how I would approach a romance, since the pieces I linked were not within that genre and didn't have any traces of romance in them.
I just heard back from them.
So, maybe I can't say including part of my fan fic "got me a job", because writing a really bad fan fic wouldn't have gotten me any extra points, but I did get a few extra points for choosing Skyrim and writing it well! I couldn't say that if not for you guys here on the site, and the existence of Skyrim, both pushing and inspiring me to write within the Elder Scrolls world.
Soon as I have a piece ready and submitted to them, I'll let you know when to expect my first not-self-published story!

Thank you for the inquiry; we are very impressed by your background and you sound exactly like the sort of author we are looking for. As a fan of the Elder Scrolls series I applaud you on your choice of fan-fiction.
