I guess I can understand why someone would have multiple characters, if they were bored with their current one. Myself though, I'm happy with one cause I'm not limiting him to certain characteristics. He's a heavy armored orc with magic and two handed weapons, as well as one handed/magic. He's part of the Dark Brotherhood, and I'll probably get him to join everything else too. A multi-tasker in other words. Once I've completed a mission, I don't want to go back and do it again. The players with ten different characters or whatever, having to do the same missions over and over again. That just sounds boring to me.

For me, I started with one character and have him in the low 50's now. Pretty much being a jack of all trades. then I started reading about people roleplaying their characters and decided I wanted to try to do that and created another character. The funny thing is, I've found areas and things doing the roleplay method that I didn't find before. LOL.

Each to their own.

I often just have the one character. My first one is now level 70 odd, but I've started a Wood Elf who I reckon I will play a lot higher. Some people like the idea of multiple characters others MUST have them.

Yeah, I guess if you are seriously roleplaying you would find different things. My thing is though, that even though there are lot of quests, they are not infinite and eventually you're going to end up doing the same things again. Some people probably don't mind, but I've never been big on replaying games. Once I've completed a game I usually let it collect dust. Skyrim may change that, not sure.

There are so many different ways to play this game that it would feel like a waste not to try out different character builds. The game has a ton of side missions and quest lines as well so it's not like you will have to run the same missions over and over again.

well the replayability (is that a word? it is now :D ) of the game depends on how you do it. In my case, my original character was as I said a jack of all trades. I primarily did sword and board but would use a bow to pick off enemies from a distance. I'd use magic like crazy fighting dragons especially lightning to stop their attack cold. So, I was good in just about everything.
In my new character, I'm strictly focusing on archery and magic. I'm trying not to use fast travel and follow some self imposed rules about the character while doing some of the storyline quests and miscellaneous ones too. While not changing the level of difficulty of the game, it has made the game more exciting as I can't just run in and melee and I have to think out some situations first before engaging.

Different characters handle different aspects of the game for me, unless I particularly enjoy the questline and just want to do it again, which happens a lot =]

My first character did the theives guild, dark brotherhood, and main quest. I had a warrior do the companions, and my mage has done the college and dark brotherhood again.

For me, a big draw to have more than one character is the fact that perks are permanent.

As far as not repeating quests, I think the Legion/Stormcloaks automatically prevents you from joining both so that is something that one character could not do both of.

My guy is a Level 11 orc who is training in the ways of magic with the College and is a brute with two-handed weapons and skilled in archery (once again, level 11, not so great in anything yet) light armored so he can run fast and often
