If you are on PC, just install Extensible Follower Framework or the Ultimate Follower Overhaul.

I know they are on the skyrim nexus, and they might also be on the Steam workshop

There are some quests that give you additional followers temporarily, but there are other options.
Dog
Horse
Armored troll
Friendly dwarven spider
Atronach
Arniel's shade
Sanguine rose
Spectral assassin
plus a few others, are all ways to add additional characters who will fight for you. In addition there are people like Esbern who will stay with you until you move on the the next phase of his quest.

Essential companions will tack on to the current count, I managed to get up to 5 followers with my Dunmer to head out to Morrowind, my bride to be, Brelyna Maryon, Barbas, Esbern, and Delphin, then there was the fact that he was an Illusion/Conjuration master so he was able to summon up to 2 creatures (Atronach, Thrall, or perhaps Conjure Dremora Lord), then Illusion to make them all go berserk, Animal Allegiance or anything of the sort to make enemies allies or certain dragon summon shouts, etc.
