Please note that advanced players will already know all this, this post is aimed at new players who want to create a warrior character.

In my experience, a lot of new players like to begin with a warrior character, but what race to choose? The obvious choices would appear to be a Nord or an Orc, what you should consider however is probably one of the most under-rated races for a warrior character, the Breton.

Firstly, don't be influenced by starting skill bonuses, you can catch up with any starting disadvantages by simply using that skill often, the thing you should be considering is racial abilities. Now I'm going to have to just come out and say this, the Nord's are very weak. The Orcs berserk rage is devastating in comparison, potentially making you 4 times more powerful for 60 seconds a day. But it's the once a day use that makes it so limiting. So why consider the Breton? It's the 25% magic resistance!

Almost all major threats in Skyrim come from magic users or magical beasts. That 25% is a lifesaver early in the game. But it gets better. At later levels, with just two points invested in Magic resistance (alteration), the use of the Lord Stone and the blessing of Mara, you will reach the 85% magic resistance cap WITHOUT any armor! The ultimate witch hunter as well as being as competent against non-magic users as any Orc or Nord.

If however you are put off by their shorter statue and want a walking tank, still avoid the Orc and Nord, go for a High Elf, a fully buffed High Elf makes a Nord look like a hobbit.
