I think they sound Scandinavian or sound like they are from Iceland or something.
My ex is from Sweden/Norway and I used to call him a Nord all the time.
I'm from NY but my sister married a Minnesotan and I dated a girl from the UP in college. I know the upper Midwest accent very well. That and the big bowl of "Minnesota Salad" on the table at holiday meals.
