I'd like to hear which places in Skyrim inspire you the most, and why. Is it the architecture, general ambience or perhaps the people living there? Or was it some distant place in the rugged wilds that impressed you?

I'd have to say my 2 favorite cities are Whiterun and Riften (with Solitude and Markarth sharing third place). I like their architecture and they both remind me distinctly of LoTR: Whiterun is just like Edoras, the capital city of the horse-lords of Rohan, whereas Riften matches my image of Lake Town from the Hobbit. My favorite hold is probably the Rift because the golden birch woods and lakes evoke such a strong feeling of tranquility & remind me of my own home country in the autumn, with a slightly otherworldly, magical twist. The Reach comes as a close second with its foggy, rugged highlands, lush green grass and majestic waterfalls. Both of these holds feel like a welcome respite from the sometimes overbearing cold of Skyrim. Still, I also appreciate the snowstorms and bleakness of the northern holds: I'm just glad I can get away from them when I need to!

The Throat of the World deserves an honorable mention as well; I don't think any mountain in any game I've played so far has matched its sheer majesty. Out of respect for the mountain I NEVER fast travel to its summit, instead always walking the steps up from Ivarstead manually.

Markarth for me. Very pretty and the views are stunning.

I like Riften, the lake is tranquil and reminds me of my Father who loved to fish. So my character lives there with his wife where he also fishes in memory of his father.

Other than Riften, I love everything Skyrim has to offer. Everything is jaw-dropping if you were to see it IRL.

I really like Whiterun, I don't know what it is but it gives a cool vibe with all the houses with an inn and a shopping center at the end of the road. And who could forget the massive Dragonsreach towering over the city!

My favorite house to live in is Markarth. Each time I leave the house the waterfall, tower and the wilderness expanse visible over the city walls just gives me a rush. 1/2 of me wants to sit out there and BBQ and the other half is excited to leave the gates motivated to explore.
Being from New England, Skyrim has all the elements that remind me of home. Snow, Mountains, Autumn Birtch trees and rambling rivers/streams.
The area around Riften would be my favorite to walk around and just explore.

Whiterun. Good layout, house is near the gates, and the blacksmith. Plus there's another blacksmith and enough merchants around.

The square (the circle) in front of Jorrvaskr is my fav city location in the game. Especially the view as you descend from Dragonsreach.

Idk why but Markarth is too linear for me, it just seems so cramped :/
I enjoy solitude the most, kids running around and playing; that wonderful old mad man that reminds me of old man jenkins. The court wizard reminds me of squidward now that I think about it LOL

I think my favorite would be Whiterun because of the openness and the very cool Dragonreach.
After that though I think I like Solitude for it's more city feeling although Windhelm has that too but it's always snowing there. LOL.
The only problem with Solitude though is a nice little earthquake would probably send that archway of a land bridge into the port below and then block the port completely.
Riften is my next favorite because of the lakeside area. I think it's a nice place.

I'm partial to Whiterun because it's always the city I spend the most time in at the start of the game. If you have your spouse living there, there are 8 merchants in the city for you to sell your lootings to. Solitude is second, and Riften is probably third. I hate Markarth, I always get turned around when I go there.

In my opinion the cities were better in Oblivion, they were all very unique. Imperial City was a sprawling, huge area with different segments. Anvil was a small beach and harbor, it was one of my favorites. Bruma was cold and always snowing with lots of Nord influence. Bravil was essentially a larger version of Riften and Cheydinhal was a very prestigious and elegant city.

I have to say whiterun, only because its so easy to buy and sell things. It was so easy to level up my smithing there. My main house is in solitude, because its so big.

Whiterun for me because it's central to Skyrim and Breezehome is my favourite house. Breezehome just feels more cozy to me and it's close to the traders and smithing area.

My favourite place is Riverwood. I love the ambience of the place, the wood and water environment. It really captures the essence of Skyrim.

I also love Whiterun for practicality and despite it being the smallest city it's very diverse in many ways.

I've been exploring the northern coastline properly for the first time and I gotta say I love it! It feels like Skyrim is a land of unexplored frontiers just waiting to be conquered by stout-hearted adventurers. I honestly can't remember the last game that made me feel like a dry-land version of Christopher Columbus. :D
