Why don't carriage drivers stop in minor cities?

Does anyone have any idea why carriage drivers don't stop in Ivarstead, Riverwood, Dragon Bridge or Rorikstead? And why don't I ever see a carriage driver waiting in a minor hold? I want to ride out of Falkreath in style, not walk.

You know thats actually a good question.

I guess you could say it's safer to travel to the bigger cities. With the war going on, dragons, bandits, vampires, and really really big spiders on the loose... you wouldn't want to accidentally get lost. or...

Yeah I have no idea. I guess it's just to force the player to actually explore/walk to places.

They don't have Stables there?

I think that must be why. And the reason why the minor hold capitals cost more is because he has to double back, whereas with the cities he can stay there. I don't understand why he doesn't take you to places like Riverwood and Dragon Bridge, as they're even bigger towns than Winterhold (without the college of course).

I guess it's his carriage service and he can run his business the way he wants though.

Even though most of it was lost in The Great Collapse,Winterhold is technically still a hold capital.

How does anyone know there was a city of Winterhold? M'aiq did not see it with his eyes. Did you?

And why do we never see them on the road? I would expect a steady traffic of carts taking people from place to place: it seems unlikely they are all sitting there just on the off-chance that I will want to go somewhere.

Maybe the majority of people don't travel with the Civil War and the Dragons, etc.
Either that or it's a Dragonborn-only service. xD
I think we should just blame it on video game logic.

I've seen quite a few carts wrecked on the side of the road. Some attacked by Giants, Falmer or Bandits. It's quite amazing that the dragonborn's cart rides never have any trouble, considering how many people, dragons and beasts want to kill you...

But yeah, it's just video game logic.

Don't let the modding community hear you, or the Nexus and Workshop will be flooded.

My question is how do the drivers direct the horses without bridles and reins? How does the horse pull the cart without a correct harness? That's something that has bugged me from the beginning but I haven't the skills to create a proper harness for the cart horses.

I wish there was a rating I could give you called "observant". I have never noticed that, but it's kind of like having a car without a steering wheel.

They do, Falkreath, and Morthal for instance. The ones you listed are villiages, towns at best. What do you figure their major trade goods are, hides, rabbit meat, potatoes? Dragon Bridge, Okay, it's the main outpost for the Penitus Oculatus, that's about it. My question is, why do they even bother with Morthal? Yeah, it's a Hold Capitol, I guess. Doesn't have much reason to go there, a crappy museum for the enemies of the last game, not even a Blacksmith, or General Store, at least you can restock some potions, and ingredients, amiright? Play Hide, and Seek with some dead kid, yay. The only reason I'd even want to get a house there is it's central location, it's not like I really like the place, or anything.

I guess the question is, what do you call a City? Karthwasten? Ooh, they've got an inn! That's about it. I'm sorry they just don't make it that convenient for you. Riverwood's like a 2 minute run to Whiterun Stables, if you don't stop to beat up the random Wolf, in heavy armor, with a 2 handed weapon out the whole way. My guess is they really want to force you to hike all the way to Sky Haven temple. You'll be all right.

Hahaha that made me laugh. :^) The last time I road a carriage the driver had a long list of like 20 locations but I never noticed certain ones to be missing. I will have to go check it out.
The driver tells you "I can take you to any of the Hold Capitals." That's it, pretty simple, really.

Personally I would love for there to be a chance that you'd be ambushed along the road. Anything from Bandits to Dragons to Vampires to whatever. Maybe even have a Thalmor Road Block of sorts.

Wouldn't mind it with Fast Traveling either. I mean it's not like your character just teleports to the location. They would actually physically travel to the location either on foot or horse.

Hell you could even have a small quest where you are hired as an armed escort through a nasty part of Skyrim. The threat being anything from something resulting from the Civil War, bandits, falmer, the carriage drivers ex wife.

Of course these random events would also just sorta happen at the most inconvienient times. "Ok I just need to get to Solitude, talk to X, and then I can finally go to bed."

taxi drivers don't always take you ANY WHERE you want , do they ? sometimes they say '' this is closest place i could go kid , walk the rest '' ..........same as the carriages in skyrim

True, but there are times the road passes right by the place you want to go, but there is no way to get off. Instead, you carry on to the city, then have to walk back to the very spot you rolled by earlier. It's not as if the cart would be traveling so fast that bailing out would kill you.

Okay, it isnt a real simulation of cart travel, so I can't expect the system to work at that level of detail.

I like the idea of an "Escort" radiant quest. Talk to the Cart driver, outside of Whiterun, and ask him "Do you know where I can find some work?" Not unlike the Rumors at Inns, only he'd tell you there's a shipment going out to Markarth, and to come back later. In return you get a free horse, and your first (Possibly, unless you've already been out there) encounters with the Forsworn. Also, in the Civil War, there's two quests where you attack shipments, one for each faction, but wouldn't it be cool if the Imperial side has you Protecting the cart? Just brainstorming here.

And for some more fridge logic, I've counted at least 3 separate occasions of carts breaking down. Not from Bandit attack, or dragons, but just the fact that iron banded wooden wheels aren't the most reliable over rocky roads. (Those aren't marshmallows, you know?) I see all of these as missed opportunities for the writers.
