Iv been playing skyrim for ages now but I dont quite understand these. I don't understand how paralyze is a alteration spell. Can someone explain these two schools of magic to me.

Alteration, off the top of my head, is the manipulation of the state of the world around you, the hardening of skin, changing of iron to silver, silver to gold, etc. Illusion is more creating a sense of something in a target that isn't actually the case, to cause a predicted reaction. (ie: fear, fury, etc.) Paralyze has always been a bit confusing to me, as it seems to be illusion based, but shows up in the alteration menu.

My only guess at paralyzing coming under alteration would be that it somehow ties in with stoneflesh, ironflesh, etc. Instead of hardening the skin against attack, you're magically hardening the entire body, rending them unable to move.

These two pages may help. They sometimes differ in presentation slightly, but both sites offer very good information on almost every aspect of the game.
