what happened to flails?

What happened to flails!? They're just a about the coolest weapons you could add in a medieval/RPG game; Wouldn't you agree?

They are pretty cool. But...they are also pretty impractical in Real Life. You have a lot more control over the direction of a sword or mace than a morningstar.

Like any weapon though, i'm betting they can be very effective with enough training and are capable of swinging around a shield.

Same thing that happened to spears, throwing stars, throwing knives, melee staves, etc. Cut. At least we're getting crossbows back.
