Question about horses

Just got my first horse and I'm wondering what the system is like.

Do i pay 1000 to rent it?
Can i take it into towns through 'loading' gates?
If not where can i leave him?
If he is mine to keep how can I call him to me when I need a ride?

I played Red Dead Redemption a bit so does it work kinda like that or is it totally differnt?

Find my earlier post about my 1st horse for odd info.
I've noticed that I cannot pay for stabling, but the horse stays put. It reappears beside me after fast-travel, so it's never really lost or left behind. I've never gotten a horse inside a gated town though, bit pointless I guess.

Oh, and 1000 seems to be the purchase price, not rental.

thanks man , are there any combat options available while on a horse cus i've noticed i cannot fire my bow - thats about the only other question i have
