Quality of followers

Has anyone experienced a difference in followers from one to another?

More specifically, Lydia always seemed to rush into battle and kick ass. I then took on a DB initiate, outfitted her with the same weapons and armor and she was timid and reluctant to fight and weak as hell!

Do the different followers have different levels of skill? Anyone know what they are if so?

theres some diffrence in followers in my opion u just need to find the best one

They are pretty much same ,dumb ass get infront of you and rushing in but yes difference being sword or magic. I prefer the magic followers
