my followers fail

every follower i got so far has perished. one dude was nearly dead, then he caught friendly fire, and bit the dust. the other two died so fast, its like they were never there. seems like they could have made their defenses a bit better.

FYI: The Dark Brotherhood Initiate and Mjoll the Lioness are invincible followers. They "take a knee" when badly hurt just like the others, but they 100% cannot die.

Do you upgrade their weapons and armor?

i lost 3 but until i messed up aela the huntress had never died and she had been in heavy contact. she would only take a knee till i accidently killed her to see what would happen to the ebony blade if i had killed her. but i accidently saved over the save to bring her back so she stayed dead.
