Rolf had watched them, paralyzed with fear...they had retreated into their cavern hours ago yet he was still there, clutching his bow with a tight grip and sweating slightly behind a massive fog ladened tree.
Fog swirled and obscured his boots and calves from view if he could tear his gaze from the gawping black cave entrance.
He noted the blood that made the darkness seem even darker and felt bile rising in his throat. This was where it had began and this was where he had been determined to end it....
Yet he couldn't move, he had stayed, as still as a corpse, for long enough for the ache of cramp in his legs and back to subside to a dull, numbing throb. He doubted he would be unable to unclench his fingers around the yew bow as easily as before and his blue eyes hadn't noticed any change in day, nor did his stomach or throat truly warn him of hunger or thirst....
And it was getting dark....
