Start off with destruction and restoration spells, and take the mage stone. Always go for the fastest magicka regen you can find. Enchant as often as well, so you can build up your skills and craft your own amazing gear.

Learn to love Firebolt, Ice Spike or Lightning Bolt (ie the Adept level spells). You'll be using them for your entire adventuring career. Even once you get Expert level spells, you'll still be using adept spells due to the mana cost of higher ones being prohibitive, even with the half mana perks.

To be blunt, magic at higher levels goes like this: Spam dual-cast Firebolts with the Impact perk and stunlock enemies until they die. Meanwhile NPC mages will deal far more damage than you can, and you'll regularly get one-shot by archers.

Yes.. I may be bitter..

If you're a sneaky git, GET silent casting. I was playing a necromancer Mage, sneaky sneaky, just be and the boss man. Predicted where he was going to move, throw down a electricity rune. Hey, what's that. Walked right into it. Several times.

Don't go into the golden claw or dragon stone adventure until you have some powerful electricity spells and magicka. When you do battle at the tower near Whiterun, get on the tower, summon something, and when the dragon flies around, shoot him with electricity. The fire atronauch will point you where with her flames. EPIC battle. Cool as F.

The mage stone is one of 3 stones you encountered on your way to Riverwood, just after you got out of Helgen.
