I Lost Lydia a few weeks ago in the Honningbrew cellar. I was actually sad about it but I wasn't going back because she was sacrificed killing that crazy magician. And it took quite a few tries to finish him off.
So I have hired Stenvarr of Windhelm. He complains more than Lydia did! Who is a decent follower that has some magicka skills but can still wield a blade and isn't a huge wuss..?

For destruction, you might hire Marcurio in Riften, or one of the new mages at the college. I think you have to do the Saarthal quest for them, though. Marcurio is pretty hardcore with destruction, but he uses chain lightning, which may become a problem with nearby NPCs. I have given him swords, but I never paid enough attention to whether he was using them.

There's a spellsword hireling in Solitude, but he seems just to want to conjure familiars left and right, even though he's listed as a destruction-heavy NPC. You may have better luck with him, but the down side is that he's already got his own iron armor, so giving him something decent will decrease his carry weight.

There's also the dark elf up at Azura's shrine. I've never used her, but she does give follower dialog and I know she's a mage. Very few, it seems, can do both magic and weapons.

Here's the UESP, which may give you a better look at their individual talents. It's funny to note how many are light armor specialists, but come with heavy armor, etc.

The question suggests Lydia is the best, certainly not where I would rank her. If you want a fighter, then my choice is usually Mjoll. One great advantage is that, as an essential character, she can't be killed.

Bad to the Dragonbone.
"Best follower" is very subjective since it depends on how you play your game as to which follower would be a better choice. Essential followers are technically better since they won't die, though if you take care of them and don't accidentally shoot them in the back on purpose, the other followers can serve you well.

But she will drive you insane with her constant chatter; similar to Stenvar. I like followers that are quiet unless something of importance happens. Like entering an area of a dungeon that's likely to be a tough fight. This is an example of how one follower isn't necessarily the best for everyone. You just need to try them out. Fortunately there are quite a few to choose from. If all else fails, work on your Conjuration skill and acquire Dead Thrall. Then you've pretty much got your pick.

Marcurio, Vorstag, Brelyna Maryon, Aranea Ienith, Teldryn Sero, Ghorbash the Iron Hand. Those are probably my favourites, in no particular order.

When in doubt, follow the fox.
If you have Dawnguard, Celann is incredible. He has no level cap. That means he's as good as you are, for always. He can single-handedly kill any enemy and he's aggressive. He's heavy armor, one-handed, and archery. But if you give him destruction staves, he will use those exclusively. He has Marcurio's voice, but it's like Marcurio grew up and got mature, finally. heh

I have gone back and saved her once or twice before but after such an arduous fight I wasn't doing battle with that crazy b@stard again. It was her sacrifice to me.

I will not tolerate failure...
Why don't u just reload your game when a follower or someone important dies and don't forget to save often.

That was the point. She died in a crucial quest battle and it took me forever the beat this guy. I didn't want to go back.and.do it again.

U do realize Lydia is really not any different from any other housecarl minus her sarcastic way of saying I am sworn to carry your burdens

While Marcurio is a little on the sarcastic side when you ask him to carry your stuff, he does have high destruction and sneak skills. Though I had to part him and Shadowmere once or twice when they decided to kill each other.
Annekke is my favourite by far. She will use any weapon you give her and she is brutal! Plus she doesn't talk all that much and she is hot! She is a little tricky to get and, sadly, you cant marry her but she is worth it. Her and Marcurio are my favourites.

If you have the Dragonborn DLC, try Teldryn Sero in the Retching Netch. He is an absolute beast, and he has some interesting dialogue too

You know Annekke is like 50yrs old right?

I only just got her as a follower for the 1time ever a couple days ago, and shes not too bad! she uses staffs effectively, advances while shooting with a bow than swaps to sword/board at the right time as well. Its a shame Im at the beginning of the game and she looks so odd in mismatched light armour :p

Aye, to Lydia :beermug:

She was a fine housecarl and friend, even if she was a little sarcastic at times. I guess that was her way of letting you know that, even though she was bound by oath, she still had her own feelings and emotions regarding her position and the relationship between you guys.

May she share great stories in Sovngard and offer assistance in an epic battle between the Dragonborn and Alduin should that day ever come to pass....

She truly did have a beautiful heart and love her battles... and her bread  (aw the memories!)

Rest in p-peace!

She is SO not 50 years old! They married young back then remember? She's like in her late 30's early 40's.

Lydia is creepy. She sits in my room, eating my bread, staring at me when I sleep... I moved the whole family to Lakeview and Lyds has Breezehome all to her creepy self.

Eola is great in destruction & conjuring as well as wielding a blade or bow. She's a nightblade I believe its called. My other favs are Serana, illia, Aranea. For a good archer Aela, Derkeethus or Annekke Crag-jumper. The only one I know of that wields magik & sword well is Eola.

I like Jordis for a fighter and Mercurio for spell throwing.
