Snake Tortoise
Here's For Your Trouble
Anybody played from start to finish on legendary? How did you do it? What did you learn from it? Any good stories of overcoming the overwhelming odds against you?
I reached level 40 last night (first game on legendary) and having just hit the point where I can put double enchantments on everything I ran through the White Phial dungeon with Lydia and my conjured dremora lord absolutely annihilating everyone who stood in our path. Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but double enchantments were a huge game changer.
My build is a sword and board, light armour wearing Breton conjuror, with perks in alchemy, enchanting, smithing and speech. I've been transmuting iron to gold for smithing and enchanting leveling, and for the most part letting my companions handle the fighting.
I started out almost dying in Helgen, which I didn't know was even possible before. I quickly learned how futile my one handed ability was but also how useful the conjure familiar spell is at low levels. At the very lowest levels that wolf really holds its own! All game I've been relying on bait and switch tactics, approaching the enemy then backing off to let my follower and summoned wolf/atronach/dremora engage. Then when the enemy's health was down I'd typically (and in cowardly fashion) run in and take the glory. The conjuration idea was that no matter how nerfed the dragonborn is, my minions are just as effective as usual. There aren't many situations that can't be solved by repeatedly spamming atronachs until the area is cleared.
I've still died plenty of times. It's a humbling experience to be one hit killed by a two handed axe wielding bandit thug, or relentless draugr. Often even the most basic draugr or bandits would require a healing potion or two to beat. Even wolves and mudcrabs have been serious opponents! The game changers have been the moment I found a banish weapon in a store, which allowed me to train every level regardless of the cost of training; the moment the dremora lord spell became available; and hitting 100 enchanting. I hit 70 smithing at about the same time so the leap between running around in elven armour with single enchantments and glass armour with high level double enchantments was massive. At present magic is doing almost insignificant damage to me and with a better shield and fortify block on my bracers I can stand in front of a bear tanking damage. The whole point of the build is to have summoned creatures and a follower as my offense, while I stand tanking damage with 570+ armour, high level blocking, the best magic and elemental resistance possible and restoration spells to top up health. I was wondering whether it would even work for a while, but it seems it's coming together now. For anybody tempted to take the legendary challenge it's a viable build if you know what you're doing, and you could certainly swap conjuration for the Sanguine Rose if you want to put conjuration perks elsewhere
Anyway, the game is ongoing- I'll have to kill Alduin before I can truly claim it as a success. I want to hear your stories! Glorious victory or crushing defeat? I want to know how the various builds stack up on the hardest difficulty
