im wearing elven armor right now. should i put on a set of heavy armor so i can lvl up my heavy armor stat or stick with light armor for now?

Absolutely not. Play style changes quite a bit based on armor type / mage robes.

so what should i do exactly? lol. my armor only adds up to 140 right now

I love to play light armor characters. Light armor characters attack by moving in, swiping then moving out. Or sneak attacks. 140's fine. Light armor is all about mobility. Just put perks skills into light armor and learn how to play it. Ie: 2 handed weapons with their slow attack speeds are poor weapon choice for light armored characters.
