Ok so no toilets but then why are there sewers? The rat way in riften might as well be a sewer. Also you travel through a sewer during the thieves guild quest line.

Side note: why is it called the rat way when there are no rats?

A place to dump sewage that isn't the side of the road doesn't necessarily mean indoor plumbing. I just noticed "manhole covers" for lack of a better way to describe them as I was walking down the road in Solitude. I know Romans basically had benches with holes in several of their public places where the refuse went somewhere below. I don't recall the standard medieval domicile having anything of the sort. They went the chamber pot route.

Side note: Because skeeveraway just doesn't have the same flair?

The rat way is one giantic toilet bowl ,we need to move to better spot like some other guild which I won't mention so I won't spoil :)
