For my Imperial (that was a battlemage), Belrand helped me a lot during my first journey at Skyrim.

I second Belrand. His AI with staffs is unequalled, plus he spawns a familiar in combat. Give him some ebony armor, shock and fireball staffs, and you can basically walk around Skyrim watching him slaughter everything. All you have to do is cast a 'heal other' every now and then. His verbal repertoire is pretty good too, there is a lot of variance depending on where you are and what you're doing.

Any follower can be great, so I chose the first I saw, Uthgerd the Unbroken. Give her a set of Legendary Daedric, a giant's club, fireball and chain lightning staves and you're good to go.

 

[Dagmar]

Lydia. Housecarls are well rounded once you level them up. If you equip them optimally they can kill anything and everything the game can throw at them.
