so im sure this has been talked about and i know ive seen something about mods on it somewhere but i just want to say that cooking is a joke. i know alot of the stuff to make the recipes isnt hard to come by but honestly, the venison stew and elswyr fondue are the two most useful dishes and once youre at about lvl 10, they dont really do anything for you. i think it was a good idea on bethesdas part to introduce cooking, and i dont even think they should have added it as a skill, its fine just as a side activity but i think that they could have made some recipes that involve maybe harder to obtain items and had the meal provide greater benefits... i know they prolly didnt wanna get to world of warcraftish with it but still. /rant

No soul gem large enough.
I so rarely bother with food or cooking, it's a wonder my character doesn't faint. I think it's just one of those things you can choose to bother with, like having a nice set of clothes for walking about town, or sitting in chairs when you meet people for quests.

LOL. I don't really do either of those things. I often come to town in just normal combat armour or robes, and I just stand next to someone when talking.

maybe they just put it there for those who take role playing to the extreme. it would be cool though if you could make like dragon steaks or sausages, so on and so forth (except for the fact that the burn up as soon as you kill them [which makes me think they would fare to well on a grill :p]) and have like 10hp regen per sec for 720 sec or something that actually made it worth stopping the quests and grinding to make things in preparation for the journies to come. like i said, it doesnt have to be a skill that helps you level as a character, just a more rewarding outcome

Completely agree. They've obviously put a fair amount of effort into it, but I would bet that it's a very small percentage of players that bother with this. I haven't checked, but is there at least a market to sell cooked items, where you can make a bit of coin? Probably not enough to warrant the effort at higher levels.

I posted in the MODS section a wishful little thing about foods and making different kinds with the different ingredients.

I often find that cooking is handy so I can make some of the stews that restore health and stamina and make a bunch of them. I really haven't found any use for the potions or foods that do regeneration. Between the natural regeneration and the potions/foods for healing and stamina I heal faster than the regeneration works.

Now, if the game had an element to it like the Fallout New Vegas hard core more, where you had to eat/drink/sleep periodically or your abilities would be impaired, then I would find cooking much more interesting.

the most valuable fully cooked meal is worth 8 septims

and the 8 septims is its base value, youll prolly get less selling it to a vendor. but yeah, even if the meals didnt have more beneficial effects, making them valuable enough to warrant selling would at least make me a little happier.

What do you want in skyrim... to open an resturant? Although I agree on that it gets usless when you lvl up. For food to make any snse Bethseda should make your character hungry.

Simple. We need a hardcore mode. Like Fallout.

Want to know why I don't bother with cooking in the game? I'll tell you,

BECAUSE I DO IT EVERY FLIPPIN' DAY IN REAL LIFE.

That's why. :D

This would have been okay if Skyrim had a Hardcore mode like Fallout New Vegas. That way, your character is required to eat something every now and then. Meal you cook yourself could be more filling than food you scavenged in the wild.

Which doesn't take miracle working. I remember dungeon-crawling games from back in the times of the original Wizardry that prompted you on an automatic basis that you were getting hungry. For some reason I am thinking I remember something like that in the original TES:Arena but it's been a long time. I can literally see a screen in my head with the words "you are getting hungry" across the bottom of the player view above the HUD controls, but I can't fill in enough other details to say what game I'm seeing in my head.

I don't cook in Skyrim because there are no bathrooms.
