The secret American
so i started this quest, and i need to go with Barbas the dog to some point beyond Helgen, but when Barbas and I enter the city, Barbas will keep walking back and forth so i can't complete the quest..

I tried attacking him so he'd follow me, but he kept attacking and he can't die, he doesn't lose life, and nor do I

Barbaras will follow you most of the time, but I found that he gets lost a lot or doesn't want to go where I go so I have just gone to the place indicated (can't remember the name right now) and he was there waiting.

Work is really cutting into my gaming time.
Barbas and stray dog get lost, Vigilance gets killed! Frustrating

You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.
When I did this quest, I'd be the one following Barbas. Every now and then he'd stop and turn around to make sure I was still following him. And he always took his time in continuing the journey. At times, he'd even lie down! Whenever he did that, I always (mistakenly) thought this was the end of the line and our destination was somewhere nearby. Next thing I know, he's barking and ready to go. I finished the quest, but man, he sure took his sweet time about it. :)

Barbas is a great follower if you don't mind him nudging you off the side of cliffs now and then. I took him around with me all over before I finally did the rest of the quest.

Barbas is my favorite follower, you can avoid being nudged off cliffs by staying a good distance away from them, avoiding them, or simply just keep moving so he doesn't get a chance to get near you. If Barbas gets hostile, use the 'Animal Alliegience' shout and he should calm down and no longer be an enemy. Who doesn't want an invincible dog for their travels? The only problem is, sometimes you can't take him in a few quest required places, so I'd suggest being able to conjure up allies!
