Your Companion Replaces Your Follower glitch with Serana.

So I made a new character awhile back and had completed companions and then Dawnguard. I forgot to do totems of Hircine so I went back to talk to Aela with Serana in my party. As soon as the quest started the usual "Your companion replaces your follower" text appeared, but Serana never left and is still my follower. I was wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else with other characters or is this just something with Serana? It's pretty interesting at least!

I had similar things happen while I was in the middle of the dawnguard story and Serana was still a mandatory follower, never had it happen afterwards though, then again I didn't keep Serana as a follower after since her raise dead spell is annoying cause I can't feed on bodies in werewolf form after she raises them.
