The scream was what woke him up.

He had no idea where it came from, the noise was so loud it felt like it was coming from everywhere at once. He grabbed his ears and quickly stumbled over to the steps, trying to figure out the source. once he reached the roof of his little turret he stared through the misty fog, tracking down the direction of its owner to the bottom of the mountain. the voice seemed human, so he automatically stared in the direction of riverwood.

    "oh cr**" Thomas Rakinson muttered.
The scene was terrible-looking, even from a distance. buildings, or at least what remained of them, were on fire, omniously illuminating a river turned deathly crimson from the streams of blood trickling down from the villages pathway. and the corpses.
Some looked relatively unscathed, like whoever; or whatever had killed them had been in a rush.others looked like they were fresh out of quagmire, with missing appendages, skin and, in some instances...

Thomas looked away. it was just too much.
As he sat there, trying to withold both tears and vomit, he tried guessing what may have painted such a grotesque, twisted scene.
Dragons? No. The buildings were destroyed, but the flames were too small and he would have heard roars. Vampires? It couldent have been, there was too much blood left.

Someone had to be warned. What had happened here must never be repeated. He could not- no he would not let this happen again. he would head to Whiterun and warn the authorities of what had happened here, even if someone else had.
But then he heard the scream again, and this time it was closer, on his side of the river, and he knew that he could not let the owner of the scream down. grabbing only his sword and robes he rushed out of the turret into the looming wall of fog.

The Lost stood tall, not turning around. The creature was standing right behind him. He was impressed it had managed to sneak up on him. His eyes narrowed and his hand slowly went for Ebony, his ebony blade, the creature leapt as he did. It's unnatural screech filling the silent crypt. The Lost spun with all of the agility he could muster.

He managed to slice the creature along it's stomach and knock it off course, it's decaying body crashing into the table and his instruments. The Lost quickly backflipped to create more space between them, he knew the creature wasn't dead. He had fought one before. His eyes narrowed once again as the creature stood, it's limbs a tangled mess. One of the arms was mangled in an unnatural angle and it's guts were hanging out of it's disemboweled stomach. Putrid, coagulated blood fell to the ground beneath it. However the creature, perhaps a nord male once upon a time, seemed unfazed by it's grievous wounds. He watched the creature carefully, feeling something wet running down his cheek. He touch his face and drew his hand back bloody. Three shallow gashes on his left cheek were evidence he barely survived the attack. They would scar.

The Lost drew his other blade and readied himself. This creature wasn't like undead that The Lost had ever studied. It was possible it wasn't even undead. But it was smart, at least with a primal animal cunning. The Lost could only assume it was sent here to kill him for his necrotic scrying. Which means the culprit, or culprits, behind this had felt his efforts.

The creature rushed again suddenly, claws down low but sweeping upwards in a deadly arc. The Lost parried them and quickly sunk Ivory, his bone sword, hilt deep into the thing's chest. This would have destroyed even an undead's heart but the thing kept fighting. Now he was locked in close combat until he pulled his sword from it's flesh. He ducked under another swipe, delivered a brutal kick to it's chest, and freed his blades. Spinning them in a dazzling dance, he went on the offensive. Now the creature was being pushed back. The Lost kept delivering deep cuts and swift stabs, turning the thing's flesh into a patchwork of leaking wounds. But it wouldn't go down, even when he cut off it's mangled limb. It kept trying to attack.

Rolling to the side after dodging another attack, he spied an ancient axe lying on a casket. He quickly grabbed it and hurled it right as the creature charged him yet again. The ancient weapon hit home. The axe blade sunk into the thing's skull with a sickening thwack. The force of the blow sent it flying off it's feet and it landed on it's back, a cloud of dust rising around the finally still creature.

The Lost stood up slowly, looking around but keeping an eye on the creature. After making sure it was clear and letting a few minutes pass, he quickly gathered all of his items; books, papers, quills, tools, and everything else. As he started to leave he looked to the body with the axe still buried in it's skull. He decided to leave it in until he returned with the others. He made sure he had cleaned up all evidence of his necromantic activities and then swiftly left the catacombs.

He made his way through the caretaker's house, seeing his ravaged body in a pool of blood, and moved quicker. This is not good. They knew what I was up to, they snuck one or more of those creatures into the city undetected, and I still know little to nothing about them; other than an attack on Riverrun I had seen through scrying. If they are already bold enough to infiltrate and attack towns, the situation could become...grim. He reached the inn and entered quickly. Eyes were drawn to him, no doubt due to his appearance. Half of his face was covered in blood and grave soil clung to his clothing. He spoke to the room emotionlessly but with urgency, "We have problems. Where is Aliah?"

Aliah gently extracted herself from Alice, and headed downstairs. It was abundantly clear to her that she'd be getting no more real sleep. As she reached the last step, the Bosmer that usually kept to himself, walked in, looking like he'd just been rolling in dirt and rocks. "We have problems. Where is Aliah?" He announced. 'Well, that's the understatement of the century' she thought drily, noticing that he'd gained three gashes on his cheek. She assumed they weren't as bad as they looked, since they didn't seem to be bothering him much. "Here. I hope you've found something useful. These things just wiped out Riverwood."

"Yes. I recently learned this as well...just before I was ambushed by one of those things." His emotionless eyes narrowed and held something close to what might have been anger. "Inside the city. There may be more lurking nearby. What's worse is they seemed to know exactly where I was, that I was alone, and were able to attack me swiftly."

He raised a hand to his cheek and then spoke with an expressionless tone, "I managed to survive the attack but it took me nearly half an hour and inflicting what should have been fatal wounds to even undead creatures to put it down. Otherwise I would have been here sooner with the news. I don't need to tell you that the very fact that they are now bold enough to infiltrate a major city and wipe out settlements is not only unsettling, but a testament of how dire this situation has become and how much more important our quest is. Also I feel I should tell you I learned an entire coven of Necromancers were wiped out by these things, so our theory of them being different from undead and someone very powerful behind this are much more likely."

His violet eyes looked into the vampiric Altmer's unblinking. "I'm not sure if it was really dead, but I can at least take you to where I was ambushed. If the corpse is there you can see for yourself."

Dorthe kept screaming for help, but her hope was beginning to waine. Who was going to hear her now? all the guards were dead, and nobody would be traveling at this time of night.
The creatures lurked in the shadows of the trees, not rushing with this one. they enjoyed the look of fear on the girls face, it was the best they had seen all night. The first one, reluctant to halt such a beautiful scene via death. qucikly, it jumped at her, raising bringing down its claw towards the girls face.
    It never made it.

" what in oblivion are you supossed to be!" exclaimed Thomas as he ran his sword through the creature.

Aliah frowned, as she considered the elfs' words. "If they've learned to infiltrate major cities, that doesn't just mean they're getting bolder. They're learning" she shuddered at the implications of her revelation. She ran back up the stairs, into the room where Alice and Simus remained, with Salthar and Julius. "Simus. I believe the new vampire that was just here, Auguste, wished for you to accompany him to some meeting in the Underforge. Take Julius and Donath with you. Salthar, you, Elizabeth and Torin follow us, and kill anything that gets' past us, but stay outside..wherever it is we're going." She turned, headed down the stairs, again, and motioned to the assassin and knight. "Shadari, Averain, you're with me" finally, she turned to the Lost and nodded towards the door. " Lead the way"

(OOC: Sorry if it seems' god modd-y of me to order everyone around, but I think Aliah would take charge in a situation like this, let me know if I've pissed anyone off:p )

Donath, who'd passed out at the table he'd been drinking at, jerked awake, pulling his iron dagger from its' hip sheathe. "Come on then, ye gutless bastards!" He roared, and then realized that he was among the members of his company. Looking more than a little embarrassed, he sheathed the dagger. "Ahem. Right then. What's goin' on?"

Shadari's ears perked up as the Lost, or whatever he called himself, burst inside, his face bleeding, and covered in what looked like dirt. 'It looks like he's been having fun' she thought sarcastically. He announced that they had problems, and spoke with Aliah. As he spoke, the Khajiit assassin began to understand what the man meant by 'problems' if the creature she and the Bosmer had seen after their duel in the woods near Falkreath was learning, they were all in real trouble. Especially since it was obvious there were more than one of them. "Shadari, Averain, you're with me"

The assassin narrowed her eyes, and flicked her ears back, but nodded. If those things really were in the city, she couldn't waste the groups time by refusing to follow orders. 'I'm not exactly looking forward to monster hunting in the dark, but it beats standing around all night when I could be sleeping.' She looked to Averain. "Well, you always said you would be my escort" she said with mock sweetness.

Alice was much calmer with Cilla in the room with her, almost relaxed. The two sisters knew each other better than anyone else and they had been through so much together. Aliah quietly got up and went downstairs. Alice figured that the vampiress had resolved to getting no more sleep tonight and decided to see what the hubub was about. Simus filled Aliah's gap by taking Alice into his arms and she laying her head down onto his chest. Cilla took her other side and the three laid down on the bed together. There was no talking, no words of reassurance. Simply love and peaceful, relaxing silence. It didn't last long however, as Aliah came back up soon.

"Simus. I believe the new vampire that was just here, Auguste, wished for you to accompany him to some meeting in the Underforge. Take Julius and Donath with you."

"I heard him. I'll be along after I get my girls back to sleep. The Companions can handle themselves." He turned back to Alice but listened to Aliah continue to give out orders. She was leading the group somewhere but not to Riverwood. Something wasn't adding up here. "Wait a minute. Why is she splitting the group up? And where are they going?"

"I think I might know." Alice asked from the bed.

"What are you talking about?" Cilla asked from the other side of Alice. Simus looked at her too.

"I saw the creatures moving toward Whiterun, and I saw that Bosmer, The Lost, killing one of them. I couldn't see where he was fighting but it must be close."

    "How close?"

"Based on the time between the two visions, and the speed at which the creatures were moving, these things could be in the city right now. I saw The Lost leaving whatever chamber he was in. My guess is to warn us about it. If he's back already we need to know what he found, or at least wait for him until he comes back."

"Allright, I'll go downstairs and see what's going on. Then I'll go to the Underforge and talk to the Companions. I want you both to stay here. Alice? If you have any more visions I want you to take your sister and go back to the house. Get Carlotta and Mila out of there and go to the Underforge. Cilla, stay with your sister at all times. You two understand?"

The two girls nodded and Simus went downstairs. The Lost was back and Aliah was making ready to leave with Shadari and Averain.

"What's going on here?" Simus asked, taking in The Lost's battered expression. "What happened to you?"

Averain inclined his head to the Altmer vampiress, drawing his blade and checking the sharpness. He sheathed the weapon again, satisfied with its' readiness. It was an old tradition the knights he'd fought alongside had. The vampire knight had a feeling there would be some serious bladework...wherever in the city they were going. "Well, you always said you would be my escort" the Khajiit woman said drily. Averain sketched a small bow, along with a smile. "I never intended to escort you into danger. But fate rarely abides by our wishes"

Salthar, you, Elizabeth and Torin follow us, and kill anything that gets' past us, but stay outside..wherever it is we're going." Although surprised by the sudden flurry of activity, he inclined his head. "As you wish." He stood from his chair, and left the two sisters alone, and noticed Elizabeth in the hallway. "My dear. If you'd come with me" he motioned for the stairs, and stepped to the side awaiting her. He was very curious as to what had brought up Aliahs' concern.

The Lost's unfeeling eyes found the old general who asked him a question; he only half heard it though, deep in thought as he was. Something about his appearance he guessed. "I had news. About the creatures, an attack besides the one in Riverrun, and about the ones behind this. However I was held up by one of the creatures that tried to take my head along with the information it contained."

"Now," he turned back to the others as the ones the Altmer vampiress had called over arrived. "This way."

He turned without another word and left the inn. He didn't bother to check if they were following, he assumed that they would. Besides, even if they didn't, he wanted to examine the creature's body. There may be questions about what he had been doing in the crypt in the first place, but of course he didn't have to answer them. His steps soon led to the Halls of the Dead. He stopped and turned around at the door, looking to the group behind him. "It's down in the crypt. The Priest is dead, so don't be surprised by his ravaged corpse as we past it."

He drew Ebony and Ivory. "I suggest you arm yourselves. Just in case."

Shadari followed Aliah and the Lost into the hall of the dead. "It's down in the crypt. The Priest is dead, so don't be surprised by his ravaged corpse as we past it."Shadari frowned. She wasn't overly familiar with crypts or halls of the dead, but she was pretty sure the caretakers area was before the crypt. "Hold on a minute. Your ears are almost as good as mine. How did you not hear one of those things slip past you, murder the priest, and then come back into the crypt?" She asked, narrowing her eyes. She drew her falchion, just as a precaution. The crypts were fairly large, and the assassin didn't want to be caught off guard.

"I'm not sure. Perhaps a spell of silence was upon it, I didn't spend much examining the body. I thought I should inform all of you." The Lost looked to the Khajiit and shrugged. "Perhaps it killed the priest silently and just kept attacking the body, who can say? I was absorbed in my own thoughts at the time."

He spoke neutrally as he made his way past the priest's bloody carcass to the door that led down to the crypt. "Perhaps I am just deaf or foolish. Perhaps I was lucky, perhaps I should be dead. But I can debate that with myself later. Everyone ready?"

    TheShadedOne

"Perhaps all of them" she said softly, following him down into the crypt. She glanced over her shoulder at Aliah and Averain. "Ready as I'll ever be, I suppose. Coming you two? I thought vampires would be comfortable going into a place filled with the dead" she knew her words sounded rather harsh, but it was the best way to deal with stress. And she definitively felt stressed. Despite the little duel the two of them had shared in the woods, what seemed like an eternity ago, she still wasn't sure she could trust the elf. From the moment he'd entered the city, he'd vanished, and had only reappeared now, covered in dirt and bleeding. For all she knew, the mer was leading the three of them to their own tombs. She eased one of her knives out of her belt sheathe. It was a simple precaution. It never hurt to keep your guard up.

"Hold on a minute. Your ears are almost as good as mine. How did you not hear one of those things slip past you, murder the priest, and then come back into the crypt?" Aliah was unwilling to start suspecting her companions, but she was worried that the assassin might have a point. "I'm not sure. Perhaps a spell of silence was upon it, I didn't spend much examining the body. I thought I should inform all of you." The Lost confessed, looking at the Khajiit and shrugging. "Perhaps it killed the priest silently and just kept attacking the body, who can say? I was absorbed in my own thoughts at the time."

The Lost descended into the crypt, and Shadari followed him, looking over her shoulder as she did so. Coming you two? I thought vampires would be comfortable going into a place filled with the dead" the vampiress drew her swords and followed. "Not all of us" she said quietly. They descended in silence after that, until they passed into the actual crypt itself. Recently disturbed dust still settled, and laying in a pool of blood, was one of the creatures. An ancient axe embedded in its' skull. "Well done." She said to the Lost. "I wonder...you said it took you nearly half an hour to kill this creature? And still it wounded you?"

    Drahkma

Averain winced at the womans' sharp tone. However, he didn't respond. Instead, he drew his weapon and took up a rearguard position. Not because he was afraid, although he was slightly nervous, but rather because he out of all of them had the heaviest armour. Which meant if something, say wickedly sharp claws, slashed into him, it would do little more than alert him to an attack. Plus, he would be the last line of defence. It was his job to stop the monstrosities from running amok in Whiterun. If, there were anymore of them in the crypts.

"-kill this creature? And still it wounded you?" Aliah was saying, and the knight stepped around them to get a better look at the dead thing. An expert throw seemed to have ended the fight. Then again, an axe to the head usually ended any fight. Clearly, the battle had been just short of desperate. It had very nearly been gutted, one of its' arms had nearly been severed, and a sword had been thrust through its' heart. 'On anything else, I'd say this was over kill. Massive, overkill. But on this...' the knight shook his head, and returned to guarding the entrance of the crypt.

"Check the wounds." The Lost pointed, ignoring the compliment and moving onto business. "I performed many attacks that would have killed even undead creatures. The disembowelment would have killed anything living along with the loss of it's arm and a blade through the heart is even enough to slay a vampire patriarch, trust me I know. But despite all of these wounds along with severing ligaments, tendons, and arteries it continued to fight. Right up until the moment I sunk the axe into it's skull."

He walked over to the thing's corpse and crouched down beside it. He grabbed the hilt of the ancient axe and wrenched it out with wet sucking sound. He gazed at it for a moment, then tossed it to the side. It clattered against the wall and laid on the ground now unimportant. "No enchantments. A simple nord axe. So I was right I believe. It may not be the only way to kill them, but grievous wounds to the head seem to keep them down."

"Make no mistake," he said turning to the Altmer vampiress. "It only wounded me because of surprises and it is just superficial. After the battle began I was no longer injured. I was a trained assassin and have been fighting my entire life. I am well versed in the art of killing and death, the fact that it took someone like me that long to kill it is a grim thing indeed. But if I am right about attacking the head, it shouldn't take that long to kill one next time."

Torin nodded at the female Altmers' orders. He wasn't particularly looking forwards to working with the Thalmor sorcerer, but at least it was better than leaving him alone with Elizabeth. It seemed the two of them were getting along pretty well, but he had no plans to leave the girl alone with a vampire. He strung his bow, and made his way to the Hall of the dead. Setting an arrow loosely to the string, he waited for the healer and sorcerer to join him.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________-

The guardsmen sent to Riverwood arrived to see a Redguard man fighting...something. Or rather, multiple somethings, that were terrorizing a small girl. The Redguard man was obviously trying to help her, but the six men captain Bornir had sent knew the warrior was in trouble. One of the mounted guardsman, a sergeant, drew his sword, and roared for the charge. The four creatures remaining turned, and shrieked. The horses whinnied in panic, and battle was joined around the Redguard man and the young Nord girl.
