Question: If I'm already a vampire can I start the quest?

I haven't got the DLC yet, and I'm trying to avoid looking at any of the threads in this post because I don't want to spoil the experience.

I made a vampire character exclusively for Dawnguard.

So, my question is: Can I even start the Dawnguard quest if I'm already a vampire, or do I have to cure myself? I'm not going to join the Dawnguard faction with this character, but will I even be able to start the quest considering you have to speak to the Dawnguard agents to begin?

That's what I did. Kinda stupid they don't even recognise you're a vampire.. or maybe they do
