I guess I don't see that type of personality as much of a team-player thus the need for a more compelling reason then "I want to fight in a war." But I suppose many of the folks who join armies are narcissistic and egotistical. So you may have a point.The character would join the war because he wants to fight battles in a war. It need not be more compelling than that. And sticking to the theme of this character being the biggest arseling possible, he should join the side opposite of whoever he left Helgen with, which would make him somewhat of a betrayer to both sides whenever he decided to break his oath.
