Do you have an auto save from when you left the Ratways the first time with Esbern ?

that is a real mess ... I am also having same problem .. well I will go back and see if esbern is there then i will escort him

i fast traveled to riverwood then i went back to were he was at first but he was not there AND i have almost finished all the side quest but i am still having this problem what do i do?

Okay I think I have some idea of what the issue may be. For the person who had a bodyguard, that's not a bodyguard that's a follower. I'm not sure how you ended up with two - because Esbern also counts as a follower and you can only have one at a time. Unless you are running mods to be able to have multiple followers, try this: re-load to where you first meet Esbern. Dismiss your bodyguard/follower. Then speak to Esbern and have him follow you. Remember you have to actually walk him back to Riverwood; if you fast travel he will not follow you. Also everyone attacking you likely means one of two things: either you have contracted Sanguinare Vampiris, the vampire disease which without the Dawnguard DLC everyone will attack you on sight with - or you have a very very high bounty which has the same effect. You can check to see if you've contracted any diseases by going to the Magic menu and looking under effects. If this is the case drink a cure disease potion or pray at a shrine. Should fix it. If you have a high bounty - which you can check by going to the menu after your quest journal and checking under Crimes - either let a guard arrest you (unsheathe and sheathe your sword, that's a sign of surrender and should stop the attacks) or pay your bounty by talking to the guard.
If that doesn't work I don't know what to tell ya. :/ For the others who keep losing Esbern, I had the same issue when I did this quest. You have to actually physically escort him from Riften to Riverwood, as in walk him there. If you don't - and I'm assuming this is why the one persons quest won't complete - I'm pretty sure he will just walk there of his own accord and then no you don't get the credit. Try re-loading a previous save and walking him to Riverwood; otherwise unless you are on PC and can enter the console there's not much you can do. As for the person who is having Esbern glitch out - I'm sorry but I have no idea how to solve that. ): Try re-loading a save otherwise I am stumped. Hope this helps.
