I made my way back to Riverwood and sold off some of my loot. There was no arcane enchanter in this village, so I decided to go ahead back to Whiterun since it was still early afternoon. On the road I was attacked by a few wolves and a Khajiit thief. He had a nice scaled armor and a glass dagger. I took the dagger for enchanting practice later, but found the scaled armor too large for me to carry without wearing so I left it behind.

There was a Khajiit caravan out front of Whiterun. I immediately thought back to the thief and wondered if they knew him or would recognize his dagger. I decided to keep the dagger hidden while I traded with them. I found a nice piece of steel plate armor with a 30 point health enchantment. This was an easy investment. It cost me over 2,500 gold, but gave me much more protection than my current steel set, and only weighed 3 pounds more.

I traveled up to Dragonsreach and went to the enchanters table for more practice. I enchanted my silver greatsword with a common gem for 10 points of frost damage. I enchanted a few trinkets from my loot, and turned around to sell them to Belethor, making some gold back from my armor purchase. I haven’t found any enchantments I’d like on my boots or gauntlets yet, so those remain unenchanted. I am definitely liking the look of this new steel plate armor along with my helm. It makes me appear somewhat noble, and somewhat dastardly.

I spent the rest of the day shopping and talking to the locals. It’s hard to believe I conquered the underwater fort full of necromancers just this morning. I am currently halfway through my fourth tankard of ale and will be retiring for the night soon. I’ll make the walk back to Winterhold tomorrow to give Nelacar the star. I will also go visit Urag at the library, and maybe a few professors at the college, namely the conjuration and destruction specialists.

This has been a long day, and it’s only a few hours past lunch. I took my leave of Whiterun north towards Dawnstar, planning to walk the coastal route to Winterhold. Just under the castle walls of Whiterun there were a few bandits living. I approached thinking they would have goods to trade when they attacked me. I destroyed them and was then ambushed by three more of them from out of nowhere. I raised one to help fight, and we cleaned up quickly.

I carried on north, running across a few mammoth poachers, who I thought also might have goods to trade, but they attacked me as well. I still don’t understand why no one thinks I’m intimidating. For Malacath’s sake, I’m a giant black Orc. Did they think they were going to have a good time picking a fight with me?

Further north I traveled, running into a fort of bandits, called Fort Dunstad. I used my frost magic to take out most of them, and cleaned the rest with my greatsword. I like the new frost enchantment I’ve put on it. I went inside the fort, just to look for some loot since I was getting close to Dawnstar. I fought off a lot of bandits, and eventually came across their chief. He was wielding an enchanted axe and shield, so I kept my distance and ice spiked him to soften him up.

As I ran out of magicka, I saw a spike wall with lever activation. I could see the dumb chief slowly walking right towards me. I pulled the lever and the spike wall slammed into the chief with a defeaning metal-to-metal crunching sound. I took his enchanted axe to disenchant later.

As it was now noon, I spent some time feasting on the food these bandits had prepared for themselves, but so selflessly left for me. After lunch I went into Dawnstar to enchant some things and sell off some things. The only problem was that there weren’t any general goods stores in Dawnstar. I knew there weren’t any in Winterhold either. I didn’t want to be carrying this heavy loot around for the rest of the trip.

Luckily for me, I spotted a Khajiit caravan making shop just outside of Dawnstar’s southern entrance. They happily bought all the silly trinkets I enchanted with petty gems. I also decided to enchant my steel boots with an 8 point stamina bonus. I know what you’re thinking, but I am getting better!

As I made my way into Dawnstar, I was greeted by a courier with a note saying a museum in Dawnstar had opened. Not that I’m particularly fond of museums, but it was so coincidental that I was already here when I received the letter. I went to the museum, where the court mage was standing out front explaining to me that this museum’s owner’s family almost destroyed Tamriel in the past. She told me to heed her warning and not to go into the museum.

All I heard from that conversation was “powerful artifact probable” and immediately greeted the museum owner, a Dark Elf. I went inside and he explained about broken and scattered pieces of a dagger belonging to Mehrunes Dagon. The first problem is that I don’t use one handed weapons. The second problem is that these three pieces are in areas around Morthal, Markarth, and Falkreath. Three cities I have never been to, and they are all on the far side of Skyrim compared to Winterhold. Yes, for now, I will leave this museum be. Perhaps if I’m ever in the area, I may collect a fragment or two.

Leaving Dawnstar for Winterhold, I came upon a lighthouse with a dead horse out front. As I entered, I saw a redguard woman slain on the floor, a strange axe sticking out of her torso. Next to her was a large armored bug with giant pincers. I explored the place a bit, and found a few journals of the people who live there. It seems as though they may have an infestation problem. I took the cellar key from the mantle, and cautiously unlocked the door.

Going downstairs, I narrowly avoided having my foot broken in a bear trap. Around the corner were two of these massive armored bugs, and even worse, they spit poison at me! I was glad to see my Atronach power actually absorbed the effects of one of the poison globs. I shot ice spikes at the pair as I backpedaled upstairs. I drew my blade and positioned myself between the bugs and the bear traps. With the help of two bear traps I was able to put down both of the bugs. I was not prepared to explore the cave I saw.

It looked as though these creatures had somehow dug up into the cellar from their home in a cave system underground. I would have to get more powerful if I was planning to explore this area. These first bugs were probably weak compared to what I might find inside the cave. I went back upstairs, locking the door behind me. I keep my eye on it as I write. I will need to make it to Winterhold before nightfall. There is no chance I’ll be safe sleeping here. I still have a few hours of daylight left to make the journey.

I left the lighthouse as swiftly as I could, and carried on my way to Winterhold. I ended up in a deep crevasse underneath some Dwarven ruins. I fought off a few wolves, and came to a tower that looked like it went to the top of the crevasse. Inside I was attacked by two robotic spiders, contraptions the clever Dwemer built. I was delightfully surprised to see each one had a filled common soul gem.

I found a locked door next, that would be my ticket up a ramp to the surface. It seemed that a button in the room next door activated the door, but it also activated a deadly flame trap. There was a spell tome next to the button for a ward. I have no idea how to cast a ward, and definitely don’t want to risk my life attempting it. I am certain those flames are powerful enough to kill me.

I turned off the trap, closing the door, and backtracked outside, backtracked through the lower crevasse, and circled around to the top. I was greeted by a snow bear, which I haven’t had the pleasure of doing battle with yet. I backpedaled and casted ice spikes, though I was certain it resisted the damage. Eventually I was face to face with it, trading blow for blow. I was quickly becoming overwhelmed, when I felt a sudden jolt of power. It was my berserker rage, now helping me overwhelm this poor snow bear.

I was finally making my way towards Winterhold when I saw a strange sight indeed. A dead snow bear, not the one I had just killed, and sitting next to it, was a goat. My first thought was that the goat somehow managed to defeat a snow bear. I realized it couldn’t have been the goat, but it was probably a group of wandering hunters or the like. The goat ran off as I got close, and then I saw in the distance, a pair of glowing blue snakes. Two ice wraiths, and I still hadn’t forgotten my last experience with them. One ice wraith engaged the goat, and the other locked eyes with me. I turned to run away, knowing I had just used my berserker rage.

I only got so far before it caught up with me. I was hoping my Atronach power and Yngol frost resistance would help me battle this monster. I dodged the initial blast of frost, and countered with a few powerful blows from my greatsword. This thing was elusive and agile. Lucky for me, I have a rather long greatsword. To my surprise, I was able to swiftly dispatch the wraith. I needed to backtrack back to where they came from, because that was the way to Winterhold.

What I saw next was very puzzling. The second ice wraith, the one that started attacking the goat, was nowhere to be found. I did; however, see the goat. Sitting in the middle of the path. This goat was really beginning to freak me out now. I figured it was possible the ice wraiths killed the snow bear, but where did the first ice wraith go? Could this goat have defeated it with its magnificent frost resistance? That was a question for Urag.

Either way, I was thankful not to have to fight another one. I made it to Winterhold after a very long day of travel, just as the sun was setting. I immediately went to the tavern to speak with Nelacar about the star. I bought some good dinner, cooked beef, grilled leeks, baked potatoes, and some wine. Nelacar and I ate dinner together as we talked about the star.

He actually wants to trap my soul in there, so I can somehow defeat an immortal wizard and clean the star out. If I get into trouble inside the star, there’s no coming back. I don’t know what to expect. The driving force that is willing me to do this is the black soul gem. I asked Nelacar about the filled one I have from the necromage in Ilinalta’s Deep, and he said black soul gems are filled with human victims! He said the Black Star can accept human souls, but the White Star cannot.

Black souls are easy to come by, as I am constantly slaying bandits. This will be an immense source of power for me. I will become far stronger with my enchanting. I will be one step closer to the power I desire. My only hesitation is not knowing what awaits me inside the star.

Nelacar and I talked well into the night, and I decided to sleep on it. I was almost certain I would need my berserker rage.

I hate to disappoint, guys. Horace went inside Azura's Star and died a horrible death. Usually when he dies I wake him up at an inn, but being inside the star and all... It seems as though his soul has been used to feed Malyn Varen instead.

I have been having a lot of fun with this playthrough and journal, but I think I'm going to put it on pause for a while. Maybe I can have Nelacar save Horace at the last second and continue the journal. I don't know exactly what the future holds, but journal paused for now. Thanks to everyone for supporting and reading.

That's dedication to the rules... I hate to admit but if I died in there I have a feeling I might've just shrugged it off. Anyway, it's been a good journal and whether you continue it or make a new one I eagerly await it. :)
