I'm wondering what Home would be the most ideal to own that is best for a Mage only using enchanting and that allows me to have my Spouse live in the house as well. answers for early game would be preferable since i know i will be getting proudspire manor come beating the main story line and win the war after.

Also looking for a response that may just be for if out of all the homes i can choose from and I was absolutely forced to choose one... which would be the best for my character...

My character is a Breton Pure Vampire Mage Assassin class on the Imperial side of the civil war
Apart of the Dark Brotherhood as well as Thieves Guild
Only uses Destruction, Restoration and Alteration
Has Quiet Casting
I dont like the Stormcloaks

here's my character build. have everything i want with this build already.

I realize Arch-Mages place is good... but it needs to have an enchantment table and i really want my spouse to live with me.... In fact that is a must.. My spouse must be able to live in home with me.
So would the house in Riften, Proudspire Manor, Hjerm or the house in Markarth be more preferable to me and my character?

Is there a spouse that already has an enchantment table in their house?
if not I am just gonna go with Ysolda

The Arch-Mage's quarters has an Arcane Enchanter.

All the houses can be upgraded to have one as well except for Breezehome, but you can use the Arcane Enchanter at Dragonsreach at any time of the day.

but is there one that would best fit the profile of my character where i can have my spouse live in with me? so a certain location or whatever?

I have to agree with Proudspire manor in Solitude. It would fit a character like yours the best in my opinion.

Solitude, because you are an Imperial.

With my game, (I know it's irrelevant in having nothing to do with your character), I live mostly in Breezehome in Whiterun. Probably because it was my first house and it's cozy and what not. So in my opinion, I would say stick to the house in Whiterun...however...if that isn't an option and it comes down to Markarth or Riften, then I would say Riften (because I don't like Markarth all that much lol) but also because it feels more like a house than a stone tomb.

ok. just wish you could bring your spouse anywhere and not only the 5 buyable houses or their home

i'll most deffinately get proudspire manor. and i'll probably just get the one in riften as well since i will be in those areas the most along with dawnstar

I would live in Markarth as a scholar-type mage (Calcemo and his relation to Dwemer ruins), or Windhelm as a darker mage (secret wardrobe door to enchanting room)

I forgot about the house in Windhelm lol...that secret room does make it an attractive house for mage type characters.

If you choose Proudspire Manor in Solitude it places you in close proximity to the headquarters for the Imperial Legion (Castle Dour), would be closer to the Dawnstar Sanctuary than any other house, and would be the third closest house to the College of Winterhold (and not much farther than the second closest one in Whiterun). Unless you're using mods, you have no potential followers in your Thieves Guild in Riften, but you have 2 very good ones at the Dawnstar Sanctuary and arguably the best fellow Mage follower at the College.

Depending on where you are in the Imperial Legion quest line and the main quest, either Markarth or Riften may be allied with the Stormcloaks and Windhelm is not even an option unless you've already completed the Imperial Legion quest line.

Based on that I would choose Proudspire Manor in Solitude. The only thing worth noting about Riften is that when you get married in Riften, your spouse will literally walk the whole way to your house and unless you escort her all the way, there's a very good chance she could be killed on the way to Solitude. If your home is Honeyside it's all but guaranteed that she'll make it safely to your home on her own.

If you're marrying Ysolda, one thing you may also want to consider is the fact that once your spouse moves into your home she never leaves the house. However if you would like to see Ysolda continue to wander around Whiterun you could buy Breezehome, let Ysolda stay at her house and sleep in her bed to get the Lover's Comfort resting bonus. You wont have an Arcane Enchanter at Breezehome but the one at Dragonsreach is accessible 24/7.

I think Markarth would be perfect, especially as an Imperial-aligned Breton. The Reach is home to a significant population of Bretons who were sore abused by Ulfric in a previous war. You don't have to be a Foresworn to be a Breton of the Reach (although that would be a nice RP opportunity). Vlindrel Hall also has a very nice alchemy and enchanting set-up, much nicer than Proudspire Manor in my opinion. It's also ideal for the scholarly types, what with the massive amount of bookcases, and actually gathered together instead of spread all over the place.
