"Aye aye, ma'am. I'll see to it that the landing goes smoothly," she waved two fingers as a goodbye before walking to the elevator towards the back of the room, then down to deck three. The elevator ride was short and to the point, and she immediately went to the XO quarters to see some pots and pans get hauled out of her new room. She gave a simple laugh before throwing her bags on the bed. She had gotten enough rest on the shuttle ride, so she decided to look over her weapons, make sure they weren't going to jam, catch up on some reading, then readied her music for the right time.

After some time, Kenzi went onwards to the C.I.C to over see the beginning and end of the landing on Eden prime. Scanners and monitors were ping crazy wit actions as they crew prepared for the landing,
"how is our emissions? I assume the landing was quiet? After all, we have an outstanding Alliance pilot. If anything goes wrong I want the ship ready to get the hell out of dodge at the Captain's say so," she stood back from giving orders to wait for Shepard so she could assemble the ground time. Now who was going is always the fun part. Kenzi knew she was, and Vex possibly was. He still has no idea that she was aboard. Oh fun times ahead. Whoever was indeed going wasn't going to find out until Shepard's voice traveled throughout the ship via intercom. The anxious waiting began.

"BEEP-BEEP-BEEP! GOOD MORNING! TIME TO WAKE UP! BEEP-BEEP-BEEP! GOOD MORNING! TIME TO WAKE UP! BEEP-BEEP-BEEP! GOOD MORNING! TI..."

Alice turned off her alarm clock with a hard slap, having enjoyed her nap but not so much the cold slap of reality. Her brain was back on almost instantly and she remembered that she was in her cabin on board the Liberator rather than in her room at home on the Citadel. She had a crew to get back to and it seemed that Arryn was ready to remind her as soon as she could listen.

"Alice?" She called over her omni-tool "We're beginning our final approach to Eden Prime. You should probably get up and head down to the C.I.C."

"Okay, I'm on my way down." Alice said. She quickly got dressed and headed down to the C.I.C. Everyone was at their station and Kenzi was overseeing everyone from the galaxy map. It was much more organized than when Alice first got onboard and she was pleased that everyone had shaped up in time.

"Attention on deck!" one of the officers yelled at seeing Alice get off the elevator. Everyone stopped what they were doing and saluted their commander.

"At ease everyone." She said. "How soon do we land?"

"Momentarily Commander." Arryn said over the comm. "Who's going ashore?"

"Vex, Kenzi, you're with me. Get to the shuttle bay and load up. Kain, Artemis, you'll go with us and stay onboard as backup. Be ready to move as soon as we get into trouble. I'm heading down to the armory now." She cut the comlink and headed down to the armory, stepping out to see Kain and Artemis getting ready.

"You're pl*psting me. How in the hell is she here and why is she in charge? Guess it doesn't matter now," his tone was quiet and to himself. He made his way towards Kenzi who was getting the ship ready for touch down. How she was his superior was beyond sense. Didn't matter anymore either way.

    "It's go time people!"
Kenzi playfully winked at Vex as they hurriedly walked to the elevator and on towards the shuttle bay to load up.

"Long time no see, yeah? Looks like I'm on top this time!"
Yeah, no kidding. Looks like it's me who can sit back and let the other do all the work. Let's rock n roll."
"Locked, cocked, and ready to rock!" By this time they had reached the shuttle bay and began to suit up. Kenzi fetched her rifle while Vex put on his war fatigues and grabbed his avenger.

"This feels too familiar, doesn't it? Luckily we're not waiting on a bunch of other people. The wait always kills me," he looked over to see Kenzi pull out a cigarette and light it with a steel quick open lighter. The cig had the saying "never knows best" down the side,

    "some things never change."

"And old habits die hard," they both looked at each other with a smirk and laugh.

    Uh, I didn't do it
Hmm, so he would be going with the first ground team.

A wise decision on the young Shepard's part.

The Asari had returned, but Kain paid her no mind. Instead he qucikly ducked behind his curtain and opened his footlocker, retrieving his weapons case. He was already wearing his armor, but he thought it... unprofessional to bring it aboard the Alliance ship.

Emerging from his quearters he hefted his case to the main word table. With ease, he entered the code and the case opened. His customized Claymore shotgun was collapsed inside. Retrieving it from the case he expanded the weapon, satisfied with its condition he collapsed and reholstered it. He also holstered a pistol, just in case.

Outfitted with his weapons, it was time to check his armor. He pulled up his omni-tool. Full power, he noted. And just to be safe... Kain concentrated for a moment before releasing a small surge of biotic power, momentarily surrounding himself in a blue aura. As the biotic display dissapated he nodded.

He was ready., should the little Shepard need him.

"This wire... to this wire?" The monitor flickered into life, but only to show a painfully blue screen... again. "Back to square one then..." Roki disconnected the cables. It was beginning to frustrate him now. Why could the ship not have been in working order when he got aboard? It would have made adjusting to a human ship much easier than it had been so far. "What about... this one?" The screen shut down entirely, much to his frustration. "Ok, this one HAS to be it." The screen burst into life. A heatmap of the engines appeared before Roki, and currently all of them were a lovely orange colour. A good sign, Roki thought... well, hoped. He didn't really know what he was looking for. "Mental note: write a book on hos these ships work. Anyone who ends up in this situation is gonna need one."

"Hey, you got it! Nice job, man!" Hall strode into the room. Ethan Hall, he had said his name was. He was a young engineer, in his mid-twenties. His hair was jet black and stood up at the front. Whether that was on purpose or not, Roki had no idea. He was friendly, although boisterous and loud. But Roki liked him nonetheless. He was fairly short for a human, around 5'9". From what Roki could deduce, he was born on a colony, and his father had been in the Alliance Navy. "You'll have to teach me some of your tricks."

"There's not much to teach. I don't really know what I'm doing."

"Well it doesn't look that way."

"Trust me. I went through every single wire before I found the one that worked."

"Hey, if it works, it ain't stupid, right?" Both let out a laugh. Roki smiled, but Hall couldn't see it behind his mask.

"Am I paying you tow to laugh now?" Neither engineer had heard Davis walk on deck. She was Chief Engineer, and she was a b*tch. "Quarian, if you need some work to be getting on with, I'm sure there's some dusting needs doing." Dusting. Roki felt insulted that she would suggest he do some dusting. "Now the pair of you, stop standing around and get some work done." She was eager to order people around, but did everything in her power to avoid getting stuck in herself. She pivoted and walked out. "What an A-hole," said Hall under his breath. Davis was an older woman; she had served as an engineer aboard an Alliance frigate in the Reaper Wars, and had the scars to show for it. As a result, she seemed to be encumbered by her sense of self-righteousness.

"You said it." Rowan had appeared on the other side of the room. Matthew Rowan. He at least 6 feet tall, with a nose broken in multiple places and a voice so deep it sounded like an earthquake. He rarely spoke, but what he did say he meant. A man of action. Hall had told Roki that Rowan had spent four years in jail before enlisting in the Alliance Navy. Now he was here, a man in his early thirties serving aboard an Alliance ship. The young quarian hadn't even noticed him come in, and had no idea how a man so large could also be a man so stealthy.

Hall looked as though he was going to reply, before the message came over the intercom. Eden Prime. An interesting choice of first location. From the sounds of things, the young Commander was preparing for every eventuality. Roki hadn't been called upon for the mission. And he was getting hungry. Now that the mess hall would be clear, he decided it was the perfect time to go and grab a bite to eat.

Artemis looked at the message with growing dread, because if what Alice said was accurate it was most certainly a trap. Even if the sniper wasn’t indoctrinated, they are trained to focus and hold their fire. This was in mind with Artemis’ growing suspicions. A terror attack meant to unsettle the public and force the government to make a move. All the information presented all but confirmed it, which would also made Artemis question more and more about this mission. It just seemed… Far too convenient, Artemis thought. Councilor Tevos was right in her suspicions, somebody wanted the young Commander Shepard dead. Too many protocols bent, to many questionable decisions, and the strange selection of members.

Hefting her heavy rifle and compressing it, Artemis went to her bunk and stripped. She would have to get into her armor, form fitting and light, it was of the finest quality. Slipping her pistol back on her waist, Artemis dug through her trunk for her shotgun. All her gear would weigh her down, yet it didn’t really bother the Asari. Her skill was shooting from static positions, or stalking slowly. She locked it to her back. Artemis cleared her mind of the troubling thoughts, and walked out to meet the Commander. Seeing the Krogan, Artemis nodded and adjusted her hat.

“To the hunt…” The Asari whispered to no one in particular.

"Constant Ground Control this is the SSV Liberator. Requesting permission to land." Arryn said as they were nearing Eden Prime's capital city.

"Roger that SSV Liberator. Proceed to Spaceport 1, Docking Bay C15."

"Roger that. Starting our approach. ETA 10 minutes."

"Copy that Liberator. Welcome to Eden Prime."

Soon the Liberator entered Eden Prime's troposphere and broke into the partly cloudy midday. Anyone looking outside a window could see that the colony had changed dramatically in the last 30 years. During the Eden Prime War and Saren's attack, Constant had been a large collection of prefabs and rail lines with only a few permanent buildings. Now it was a thriving metropolis equal to anything on Earth. It was connected to other large metropolises surrounded by miles of farmland. All under the protection of abundant military bases, orbital stations and the Alliance 6th Fleet. This was supplemented by a strong military culture among the populace, most of which were well-armed and part of the reserve forces. Eden Prime had been attacked and nearly destroyed twice. There would not be a third time.

Alice had suited up and was ready for battle. Her avenger and predator were loaded with armor-piercing ammo, her biotic grenades were armed and her suit was sealed. Nobody needed a breather helmet on Eden Prime but Feros had made Alice a little paranoid. So far she had never regretted wearing a fully sealed hardsuit and the protection of the full helmet had saved her head more than once. Plus it kept the rain and mud off of her, which was nice.

Vex, Kenzi, Artemis and Kain were all ready to go and the shuttle door was open. They had a short briefing to get through and now was as good a time as any.

"Listen up everyone." Alice said, her voice coming in clear through her helmet speakers. "Cerberus forces have been spotted in this system near a small moon orbiting Nirvana, the Utopia System's only gas giant and Eden Prime's source of fuel. Word is the 6th Fleet's already engaged the Cerberus forces and is mopping up but Alliance Command is worried this is only one part of a larger offensive. We're to meet with planetary command here in Constant, assess the situation and if necessary, help them in their attack. We all know that Cerberus loves moles and sleeper agents and they usually get the first move on any attack, so that's why we're going in hot. We're already docked and an escort is waiting to take up to the command center. Vex, Kenzi and I will go to meet them. Artemis, Kain? You'll stay here in the shuttle and be ready to deploy if we need backup. Once you're on the ground it'll stick around to provide air support." She looked at her omni-tool for a moment, then turned to the assembled marines. Sweetwater was in front of them. "Sergeant Sweetwater, I understand you're our shuttle pilot. You're going to be on standby until we get back and if we call for backup you'll have to clear this bay, get above the landing pad and step on the gas. Once Artemis and Kain are dropped you circle the AO and alert me to any external threats. You've got two mass accelerators and two heavy machine guns to work with so take initiative where you can but don't get stupid. Understood?"

"Understood ma'am." Sweetwater said. "We'll be ready."

"Glad to hear it. Now let's go nail Cerberus to the wall. Oorah?"

A few moments later the ground team headed up to the elevator to the command deck, walked through the docking bay and walked onto an open platform that shined pearly white in the noonday sun.

"Listen up everyone." Alice said, her voice coming through distorted by her helmet speakers. We're already docked and an escort is waiting to take up to the command center. Vex, Kenzi and I will go to meet them."

Vex and Kenzi both nodded and did a final check over their equipment while Shepard addressed Artemis and Kain. Kenzi began to fiddle with her rifle; tracing her fingers over the etchings while still checking over it. Her hair was swiped back as she fixed her hood, telling herself that she'd only use it if she needed her cloak. For a marksman, she can be fidgety. The thought of also being the XO to Shepard made her all giddy inside, and to top it off James had to follow any order. No being revered as Vex with her.

Vex simply stood back, watching Kenzi and smirking before turning his attention to his Captain. The young Shepard had the knack of speaking, that's for sure. His eyes swept over the new and old marines, wondering if the new ones were ready. Some of the new will die, that much is true. A boy will be crying for his mother while dying of his first and last gunshot wound to the belly. Bullets will always be horrendous; whether it be lead or plasma. A bullet wound to the belly will rip through it, maybe leave you trying to stuff your guts back in while trying not to pass out all while your screaming. Plasma might burn and destroy your insides and you're gritting your teeth so hard it feels like they would all crack. He didn't like the thought of it all.

"Understood ma'am." She looked up and smiled as she locked eyes with her Captain, "We'll be ready." Sweetwater is not only skilled in training others, but she's one hell of a shuttle pilot. Give her a shuttle and some guns and she'll rain fire. "Three of my favorite things all packed into one. I'll be up in the air in less than five minutes if need be. If I see any targets that are going to be a hassle, I'll put them in the ground.

"Glad to hear it. Now let's go nail Cerberus to the wall. Oorah?"

The room erupted into a loud Oorah before the ground team headed for the elevator and proceeded to out to meet the escort. The sun slicked out on the sleek white platform, coating the team in yellows and orange. One of the things Vex enjoyed about planets like Eden prime is that the sun always reminded him of home. Hell, even the settlements did once you got far enough away from the city. What a different place, this was. It was hit twice; once by Saren and the Geth, then by Cerberus. Now not only is it rebuilt, its also fortified and protected. memories like those always remind the two why they enlisted in the first place.

"So, when this escort comes, whats next? Do they have plans set for a counter attack?"

"I would assume so, Kenz." Most times in a situation of having strangers around them, being under a different command, in front of people of lower rank, or just allowing communications to be easier, they would refer to each other by their call-signs. Now, they are who they are. Unless their captain deems it differently.

Joe knew very well he would not be a part of the ground team for this mission. He didn't think he would ever get the honor unless a communications array went out somewhere. He knew it was a possibility, though. Cutting communications was usually among the first tasks of any enemy attack. Especially Cerberus, since they usually attempt to be as covert as possible.

He stood in front of a vast amount of telecommunication technology, all by himself in the room. He was monitoring the strength of the signals and made whatever minor adjustments were needed to ensure the clearest possible communication. Still, Joseph Newman had to admit that staring at signal strengths could get boring quickly. He figured that his only excitement this mission would be hastily adjusting parameters when the ground team entered Eden Prime's atmosphere.

Engineer Connell walked into the room. He was a rather stocky, rather unhealthy man six feet tall and some 215 pounds. Middle aged, Joe figured he was about 46. "What are you doing in here, Joe? Nothing's even started yet. All the comms right now are onboard."

"Yeah, I know. Just making sure everything is running smooth. You know as well as I do that if anything is wrong with the signal on the ship then it will spiral seven ways to Hell as soon as atmosphere's get involved."

"You worry too much, you know that? Why don't we just head to the mess and relax a bit. Meet some of our intergalactic shipmates, huh?"

"Yeah, let's," Joe said, walking out of the room.

"Go on ahead, I'll meet you in a sec. I came here to get something and now I can't remember."

If only Joe had stayed in the room, he might have noticed what Connell was doing. He placed a small chip, a bug, to transmit all the communications to a third party source. Cerberus. Connell smiled smugly to himself. He had already been paid handsomely in advance and, if the chip led to the death of Alice Shepard, he knew he would be able to retire.

He walked out of the room, knowing that no other crew members would enter the room and even if they did they'd notice no anomalies. The engineer caught up to Joseph.

"Hey, you find what you were looking for?"

"Nah, but I'm sure it will still be there later."

Alice couldn't help but feel on edge on this perfect, cloudless day. This world had suffered so much in its history. Saren, the geth, Cerberus, the Reapers. All of them had tried to take this world and every attack got worse. First a dig site and its nearby farming community are burn to ash. All for one prothean be on that destroys itself and gives Commander Shepard a vision no one believes. Then that vision comes true just in time for Cerberus to strip the colony's defenses and occupy it. Then the Reapers come just as the population's evacuated. With nothing to harvest, the Reapers leveled the major population centers to ensure no one was hiding. It had taken thirty years to build Eden Prime back up again and being bigger, better and more beautiful than ever before just made it a bigger target. Every attack had gotten worse. What horrors would this one hold?

Alice shook her head and kept walking. She needed to focus on the mission. If they all did their job this attack will never happen. She took a deep breath, letting the clean, cool air her suit provided into her nose and out slowly through her mouth. She admired the warm, beautiful day through her helmet's transparent polycarbonate visor, comforted by the fact that she wouldn't suffocate or freeze to death if she lost it. This was one of the most heavily defended planets in Allaince space and it had always survived. This planet would not fall.

The squad had walked down from the Liberator and onto the landing pad via a wheeled set of loading steps. The landing pad, the two hundred meters of walkway and the huge spaceport terminal it led too, were all presidium white. Clean and beautiful. Rows of gunships and kodiaks were to their left and a long runway and rows of triton fighters were to their right. The sounds of thrusters and engines was all around them. Marines were training outside a large parking lot full of makos, hammerheads and the new scorpion heavy tanks. At the end of a long monorail track two kilometers away was the city of Constant itself, Eden Prime's capital. Alice was so impressed with the sight of it all that she forgot where she was. She brought herself back to the real world whe she realized they were at the terminal building of the spaceport and two unhelmeted marines were on either side of the door saluting her. She and her squad saluted back.

"Captain Shepard!?" One of them shouted over the screaming fighter and gunship engines.

"That's right." Alice shouted back, grateful for her helmet's noise dampeners.

"Welcome to Eden Prime ma'am!" The marine shouted. "Command is expecting you! Head inside and take the elevator to the basement! That'll take you to the situation room! Lieutenant Commander Bradford's waiting for you!"

"Thanks for the heads up! We'll head down there now!"

They headed inside and passed through several checkpoints before getting to the elevator. At first the marines only recognized Alice's rank but after the fourth biometric field they started to recognize her for who she was, along with Vex and Kenzi. After passing a room of snack and drink machines they were waved through the elevator and walked out into the basement after five floors. One last checkpoint was between them and the situation room. The marines here were armed with heavy weapons, one N7 Typhoon and one arc projector. A third was behind a kiosk to their right.

"Morning Captain." The marine behind the kiosk said. She was a light skinned woman about Kenzi's age with her blonde hair in a bun. The L.C's inside waiting for you. I'm gonna have to freeze your weapons though. Hot weapons aren't allowed in the situation room."

"What's that mean exactly?" Alice asked, suspicious of anyone trying to take away her guns.

"It means that I submit a freeze code and your weapons will be subjected to a V.I that stops them from recognizing their thermal clips. They won't be able to fire. Once you leave the situation room the V.I will be lifted."

"Fair enough. We'll submit to the code."

Very good ma'am. After a few keystrokes all lights and indicators on the squads' weapons were turned off and they were finally able to enter the situation room. It was a large rectangular concrete room with rows of computer terminals, cables, monitoring stations and a huge holo emitter the size of a pool table in the middle of the room. It currently displayed fifteen blue Alliance ships and two red Cerberus ships orbiting Nirvana. An officer in in a Lieutenant Commander's uniform with a tall lean build and a brown buzz cut turned to the entering squad.

"Captain Shepard, good morning. I'm Lieutenant Commander Bradford and I'm in charge here at Constant Air Base. I'm glad you're here: we caught Cerberus with their pants down and have the opportunity to blow them right out of the sector. We were hoping you could help us press that advantage."

Then he realized who was accompanying the captain and his neutral mouth made a big grin.

"And look at this! Vex! Last time I saw you we were ground side with the turians showing them how to properly use husks as target practice! Oh that's right, that was Kenzi. You were showing us why it's a bad idea to charge husks with no ammo and try to punch them while trying to stop gunfire with a salty attitude!"

He gripped Vex's hand in a manshake.

"It's good to see you James. I hope you're ready to fight."

"How about I submit a fist to the face of whoever put in that order," Vex rolled his eyes as they submitted to the code, thus allowing them inside. He always tire at the fact that if they are fired upon, they are helpless. He smiled as he thought about his knife, and how no one could freeze that bad boy.Once inside, Vex looked upon the living skeleton with it's cables and terminal brains. Being displayed was two red Cerberus ships and fifteen blue Alliance ships, which was a nice sight to see. For once Cerberus was got off guard and not the other way around. That could change, of course. As the squad stared at the display, a familiar face walked into view,

The man in front of them dawned a smile as he recognized the two figures flanking the captain,

"Well I'm be damned. Look what the varren dragged in." Both Kenzi and Vex gave a smile when they saw the tall, buzz cut man and Kenzi went to hug him as he began to talk,

"Impressive set up you've got here. Complete with the star eyed new recruits we just saw staring at us. Do you ever get used to it? Hey, I've made this far with this attitude! Who knew CQC would work so well against husks. I still have the markings on my suit. Not to mention I had a guardian angel watching over me,"

"I had to show the Turians how it's done before getting into my perch! Who else is going to watch over this guy while showing the grunts how to shoot?" Kenzi thumbed over to vex as he laughed at the boastful statement.

"It's good to see you James. I hope you're ready to fight."

"As to you, Rick. We're always ready for a fight. What's the sitrep?" he shook his friend's hand before sweeping his hair back to fully take in the flickering lights of the display. Both knew that there was bound to be a fight. That's the nature of the beast. Eden Prime reminded them a bit of the town they grew up in; small farming town where nothing major happens and everybody knows your name. Kenzi began playing with her necklace as they waited to be briefed on the situation at hand.

"Come over here. I'll show you." Bradford said, leading Vex, Kenzi and Alice over to the holo table. He gestured a hand towards the blue Alliance ships. The holographic models accurately portrayed the real-world ships and showed thirteen cruised guarding two dreadnoughts. The two red Cerberus ships were cruisers and were trapped between the Alliance ships and a large red space station.

"Six hours ago we received a distress call from one of Nirvana's Helium-3 plants. Two unidentified cruisers had docked for refueling, then unloaded troops onto the station. They captured the docks and control centers, then six frigates jumped in from FTL to establish a perimeter. The 7th fleet responded within the hour with a six frigate wolfpack with a cruiser for support and engaged the enemy. In response, an entire enemy fleet jumped in from FTL and we had to send in the rest of the 7th fleet. Thirteen cruisers and two dreadnoughts."

"Thirteen cruisers and two dreadnoughts is some heavy firepower." Alice said, taking off her helmet out of politeness. "What exactly were you up against?"

"A dreadnought, a carrier and a dozen cruisers. That's why we had to send in our own dreadnoughts. We found out the ships were Cerberus when we got close enough to see them but we didn't really understand what we were up against until the marines boarded the station. I've never see such disciplined or single-minded troops and they were damn tough to take down. We lost a lot of good men and two frigates to handle this situation but as you can see we've been able to secure the area. Our ships have established a perimeter between the last Cerberus ships and the station and we're in the process of securing and capturing them."

"Sounds like you've got it all figured out." Alice said. "Why do you need us?"

"Because this was all too easy." Bradford said, his face turning grim. "The Cerberus ships could have gassed up and blown up the station in less than an hour, yet they haven't rigged a firecracker. We had a pitch battle with a fleet of equal technology and strength but only lost two frigates. I'm not discounting the sacrifice of those crews and I'm ready to go out there myself to avenge them but if should have been harder. If Cerberus can build an entire fleet, they've got a steady fuel source so why are they trying to capture ours with an attack that they had to know would fail? We've dispersed our frigates to look for anything suspicious and I've put our planetside forces on full alert but I've got a bad feeling this is a trap. If Cerberus attacks right now they WILL make planetfall with an all-out assault. We don't have enough ships or space stations in orbit to hold back a fleet and it would take the 7th fleet at least an hour to get back here if they left right now. The 6th fleet would need at least 6 hours to get here from Terra Nova. That's why I'm glad you're here. You and the Liberator are the best the Alliance has and you're a Shepard. Cerberus won't be expecting you here."

"Commander." One of the intel officers manning the computers said. "The Phoenix has entered tracking range. She's badly hit and hailing us."

"On screen." Bradford said. The short pale woman was about Alice's age and had long brown hair tied in a ponytail and heavy freckles on her face. She typed a few keys and a large viewscreen appeared above the holo table. It showed a beat up Alliance cruiser heading towards a large space station orbiting Eden Prime. The cruiser was covered in burn marks, large and small holes and trailing gas leaks. The smoke form extinguished fires mixed with the bright blue gas of ignited He-3 to form long blue plumes. Overall she was in bad shape.

"That ship's barely holding together. What happened to her?"

"She took the brunt of Cerberus' cruiser fire. She was in the forefront of the assault and gave the dreadnoughts enough time to line up their guns. I'm amazed she wasn't destroyed." Bradford said.

"Sir, the channel's open. Captain Marcus Phillips is on the line."

"Put him through." A smaller chat window appeared in the upper left hand corner of the viewscreen. There was heavy static and the picture was poor quality but the captain was definitely alive. "Mark! It's good to see you in one piece. What's your situation?"

"Good to see you too Rick." The captain said, the audio also heavy with static. "After the pounding Cerberus gave us I thought we were done for. I don't know how we survived. The Jutland and the Paschendale didn't make it and there isn't a ship in the fleet without some serious damage. Even the dreads took some good hits. Cerberus put up a hell of a fight."

"We won in the end though. Just get your ship docked and we'll get you fixed right up." Bradford said, hiding his doubts from the captain.

"Can do." The captain said, his voice audible with relief. "We've got a lot of wounded on board and we could all use some rest after today. Once I get planetside you and I should..." He was stopped by someone in the background. "What do you mean I...oh crap!"

"Mark!?" Bradford said, raising his voice. "Mark, what is it? Come in?"

"We've got a problem here Rick. Our fusion plant's just been set to overload. Override's not responding and we'll blow with the force of ten nukes. We've got to get clear of the station before we..."

But it was too late. The cruiser was enveloped in a blue-white explosion, a huge ball of light and force that completely incinerated the ship and half the space station. The other half became a burning wreck. Dozens of burning shuttles and ships tried to escape, looking life fireflies. The station, pushed out of its orbit, began to drift away from the planet, the explosion kicking it out of the gravity well. Without auditory emulators, it all played out in cold silence, adding a haunting eeriness to the scene.

"My God..." Bradfor said, unsure of what to do. "They didn't even have time to send out a distress call."

"I'm sorry sir..." The young comm officer whispered, looking completely morose.

"It's not your fault soldier." Alice said, putting a hand on the girl's shoulder. "This was all Cerberus."

"They must have had a mole on board." Bradford said, angry and shaken. "We've got to inform the rest of Orbital Command. There could be others on other stations an attack must be imminent!"

"Are you really a Shepard?" The girl asked, looking up at Alice with hopeful eyes.

"I really am." Alice said. "And when Cerberus starts whatever half-assed attack they have planned in the next five minutes, my crew and I'll be there to welcome them."

"I don't think that's going to happen ma'am." The girl said.

"What do you mean." Alice asked, suddenly suspicious. The girl's look changed from fear to conviction. She stood up.

"I have a message from Cerberus."

"What the..." Alice started. The girl raised her omni-tool and a large red button appeared. A detonator.

"Captain! Get down!" Bradford yelled, tackling Alice and pushing her out of the way with barely enough time for her to get her helmet on.

"The Illusive Man lives!" The girl shouted. Then, before she could be stopped she pressed the button. Five beeps of increasing pitch sounded and then she exploded. Her body flew apart with a shower of sticky thermite. The force of the bomb shattered the holo-table and three work tables while setting the entire room on fire. Six operators were killed immediately while the other six were severely wounded. Alice was knocked cold by the blast but shielded by the holotable. Eight Cerberus cruisers had just jumped from FTL into Eden Prime's orbit and were deploying drop pods and shuttles right to Constant Air Base. And its command center was now a burning mess.

"-mmander!" Bradford yelled, his leg crushed by a table and his face covered with soot. "Captain!" He shouted again. After a few seconds, Alice came too and pulled herself up. Somehow she was alright.

"Bradford? Bradford! I'm alright but we've got to get you out of here!"

"I'll just slow you down! You've got to get out of here! Head back to the main elevator on the top floor of the base and transfer it to the sub-basement! There's something there that Cerberus wants and cannot be allowed to have! You've got to get down there and secure it! I'll transfer the basement codes to your omni-tool! Go!"

"Captain?" Arryn radioed. "Captain Shepard? Alice, are you there?"

"I'm here Arryn! We just got hit by a suicide bomber and there's a burning space station in orbit! Cerberus is going to attack!"

"They're already here commander! Drop pods and shuttles are heading right for us. You've got to get back here."

"We've got a new objective. Unload the rest of the team and get the Liberator airborne. Get a distress call out to the 7th fleet and stop this attack any way you can. Do not engage the fleet by yourself, not unless you can find help. Tell Sweetwater to get over here now!"

    Wolfbane

Why change the past when you can own this day?
"Damn it. I knew it was too easy. How many lives did we lose?" He slammed his fist on the table as the comm was swallowed by static. Vex swiped his hair back behind his bandanna as Kenzi simply shook her head as she leaned in the table and crossed her arms. More lives lost to the hands of Cerberus, an organization that preaches that they know what's best for humanity, yet they kill human soldiers, and now, doom Eden prime, a human colony, for their own selfish gains. How many friends have they lost to cerberus? Vex and Kenzi both still remember when an orphanage was raided by the bastards so they could get more subjects for their horrific tests. Those were one of the times they were too late. One of many times cerberus was a step ahead. He sighed as soon he heard her voice.

"Bastards have eyes and ears everywhere," she stared at the flaming mess that was the phoenix was living up to her name. She began to get a pit in her stomach as she continued to watch, too mad not to look away. Her knuckles began to turn white when one of the techs began to talk.

"Are you really a Shepard?" One of the tech girls hopefully looked up to the captain.

"I really am," she gave a heroic smile before continuing, "And when Cerberus starts whatever half assed attack they have planned in the next five minutes, my crew and I will be there to welcome them"

"I don't think that's going to happen, ma'am" the girl adopted a more sinister tone.

    "What do you mean"

    "I have a message from Cerberus" the now mole rose up, red detonator ticking on her omni tool, then maniacal laughing started. Her eyes dawned the red glow of the detonator;

"God damn it. Always with the laughing."

"God damn it" his eyes widened for a split second as he and Kenzi both looked at each other.

"Captain, get down!" Rick let out a shout as he speared the captain down on the ground as both Kenzi and Vex slid over the table and flipped it.

"The Illusive man lives!" The mole yelled as vex heard the click of the detonator. The beeps ascended pitches followed by a supercharged explosion of sticky thermite and juicy human bits, guts and giblets sticking to the now half broken holo table.. Pieces of tables became shrapnel as glass became jagged bullets, killing the techs that didn't get a face full of thermite, or become a pin cushion from the tables. Now eight Cerberus ships came from FTL, releasing drop pods planet-side.

You never truly get used to the ringing of shellshock, no matter how many times it happens. The incessant ringing buzzing throughout your head as you try to gain awareness through the dirtied tunnel of your eyes. As Vex looked around him, he saw Rick under a flipped table, his leg crushed under it,

"-Mmander!" He clawed at the table trying to somehow get from under it, but stopped once he was shot with pain from his leg, "Captain!" The shout awoke Shepard who was seemingly intact. Vex and Kenzi both hugged their Captain, extremely glad she was unharmed.

"Bradford? Bradford! I'm alright but we got to get you out of here!"

"I'll just slow you down! You need to get out of here! Head back to the main elevator on the top floor of the base and transfer it to the sub-basement! There's something there that cerberus and cannot be allowed to have! You've got to get down there and secure it! I'll transfer the basement codes to your omni tool! Go!"

"Captain?" The sweet, but worried voice of Arryn chimed in, "Captain Shepard? Alice, are you there?"

"I'm here Arryn! We got hit by a suicide bomber and there's a burning space station in orbit! Cerberus is going to attack!"

"They're already here Commander! Drop pods and shuttles are heading right for us. You've got to get back here." Arryn went back to her cool calm as the sound of the controls could be heard in the background.

"We've got a new objective. Unload the rest of the team and get the Liberator airborne. Get a distress call out to the 7th fleet and stop this attack anyway you can. Do not engage the enemy fleet by yourself, not unless you can find help. Tell Sweetwater to get over here now!"

"Aye aye Captain. Sweetwater, did you get that?"

"Loud and clear! Let's rock n roll people!" She finished her cig before buckling up and grinning as she touched the stereo she installed. Her hair was swiped to the side as she cracked her knuckles and plotted a course to the airbase. She'll have to pick off the shuttles that stood in her way, get to the airbase, find a terminal to warn the colony, then get to the doors all before they get to the basement. How hard can that be? After all, it was her. Ths song of the hour started slowly playing, making her giddy.

"Hope everyone is buckled up, WE'RE GOING IN!" With that, she took a sharp nose dive and she blared the stereo and laughed as she weaved in and out, swatting the cerberus shuttles out of the sky like flies. She began calculating where the nearest terminal and the main engines would be. Sweetwater was simply singing to the song as she continued to be the a flying death creature. This why she signed up, this was her vacation.

"We need to get the other engines to invert their power to where it slows down it's course. I hope someone knows how to hack!" She took a sharp turn as a shuttle ran head into a wall before they landed on the makeshift landing pad. As she landed, the turret popped up from the wall as the door slid open, "Kain! Man the turret. I know you want to have some fun. Cover Artemis while she works her magic. Artemis, being a former commando, you can hack like no other whereas I have to man the shuttle."

Both agreed, Kain giving an eager laugh as Artemis began hacking the engines while Sweetwater sent a call to Eden prime to start evac if all else fails. Sweetwater checked her watched as Artemis hopped back in and Kain sat back down as the turret fell back into the wall. They had made good time, and now for the airbase doors. She wanted to be there, on time, prepped and ready. She laughed as she looked back to Kain and Artemis, and switched the music off as they began to fall back into their quiet professionalism.

On the other side, The initial team was making their way to the basement via elevator, gearing up after having their weapons once again, but this time they planned on using them. With weapons drawn, the team set foot out of the elevator to only be greeted by a few Centurions on the balcony, one setting themselves down with her typical powered boots and two guardians, a couple feet in front of the door way to the hall. Both sides started firing, but Kenzi hid in the elevator and began to aim haphazardly, or so it looked like it,

"I hate shields!" he started to fire off at the troopers while pressing his back against a box marked 'FRAGILE' he couldn't help but laugh to himself as he wondered what the state of the box's contents were in. In the heat of battle, this is what crossed his mind.

"Quit your complaining" As one of the troopers was dropping down, she released a shot, hitting him in the boot, thus causing it to set one of the guardians aflame, while the others pushed onwards. She gave a simple smirk as she picked off the other guardian, but her face turned when more troopers came. Vex rolled his eyes as he fired a few shots, clipping one in the shoulder, causing a nearby enemy to take cover. One thing cerberus does right is that they will make it damn near impossible to move up. The sound of rifles shooting started bouncing off the wall, making the troopers scream at one another to retain their position. Each time Vex would try to get a shot off, he would almost lose his head. They needed to move up, and fast. There were only a few ways; they kill them all, which would be preferable, or they get real creative. She took a deep breath, and loaded her disruptor ammo, then placed two shots, to two troopers. Vex noted what she was doing, then followed suit, dropping the same two. She then began going for kill shots; getting one in the belly, drawing another out and shooting him as he tried to drag his teammate to safety. As she laying down fire, Vex and Shepard zig-zaged their way closer, laying down suppressive fire as Kenzi then made her way up. By now, they were almost to the door, when a trooper tossed a final grenade towards them, causing Vex to kick it away from them and making sure both of his teammates were unharmed. Them over him, that was his motto. When it was all done, Kenzi lit a cig as he checked over Shepard.

"Hey, Captain. Shuttle is here, ready and waiting." She waved the smoke away from her cig as she saw the team make their way towards her.

"You're alright, Shepard. Come on, we have more work to do."

    "That we do."

Crixus and the servicemen who remained looked on to each other as they came to terms with the new situation. Teller was gone, and had left the charge of these men and women to him. The man hadn't really given Crixus orders as to what he was meant to have them do, but he guessed by the man's demeanor that he wanted Crixus to keep the pressure on, to keep up the grueling pace Teller had them in when Crixus arrived.

But after looking among them for a moment, pacing back and forth like a silent drill instructor, he saw that these people needed something different. They were unsure of themselves, for their own skills, as well as serving under the daughter of a legend. They could feel the pressure, and he was sure it was getting to them in more ways than one.

Crixus knew they needed to blow some steam. He needed to limber them up, get their minds eased.

And being a turian, who had served on a few missions like this, Crixus knew what they could do.

"Alright! Enough dawdling, form up!" They all reluctantly followed his orders, getting lined up before him as his pacing stopped. He looked among them all. "They have put me in charge of you all for the moment. I understand if that may cause some problems. I know I wouldn't feel too comfortable being under the command of one of your kind." He chuckled softly. "Kinda like I am now." He looked back to them. "But right now, neither of us are getting asked for our opinions, so I'm sure you know where to shove them for now." He looked down, sighed, his approach to this changing like the tide. Try something different. You're not the type. He looked back to them, speaking plainly. "I can tell the stress is getting to you all. Teller's regiment, The captain's legacy, it's all a bit tough to swallow at once." He paused to look one of them, a girl who looked just shy of her mid-twenties, and spoke again. "So I have a solution." He looked back among the whole of them, and smiled softly. "Pair up, we're going to fight it out of you. The turian way." They all looked to him incredulously, and he cleared his throat. "We're going to spar."

    ---

They all were now squaring off as Crixus observed. Six pairs, putting all their effort into trying to come out on top. Some of them probably thought he was just softening them up for something far more sinister. The thought made him chuckle. But his true intention of this exercise was taking effect. The edge in their stances was gone. The fear in their eyes, the tension in their movements, it all deteriorated as they focused their feelings into each swing. He could see it, sense it, practically feel the relief that came from each soldier as their focus centered on the man or woman in front of them.

But it all seemed to dissipate as quick as it arrived, as a warning siren sounded out through the cargo hold. They all stopped what they we're doing, and looked to him. Crixus raised Arryn on her ship's computer's. "As he did, he got tangled up in her call to the Captain, hearing her tell of shuttles heading for their location.

    Show time.

He looked back to them, sounding out above the noise. "Get suited up, now! We've got Cerberus inbound!" They scrambled for their equipment, and Crixus grabbed a rifle from the armory. He looked amongst their armor, looking for some sign of rank amongst them. He grabbed the highest ranked and pulled her aside for him to speak. "I'm taking half of the men up to the cc, to await the others and fight off any thing that get's through that airlock. I'm going to secure any unarmed personnel up there. and you and your group are going to start here and work your way up, check for any breaches, and secure the crew in a safe location, then meet me up top. Understood?" The woman looked to him, her eyes still wide with uncertainty. He looked to her tags, getting her name, then spoke to get her attention. "Belmonte! Did you copy that?!" She shook her head, gaining her attention back before nodding. "Aye Aye sir!" She replied, before Crixus sent her off. She gathered her team and they moved throughout the cargo hold, while Crixus and the remaining team went up the elevator to the cc, and when the door opened, Crixus motioned for the team to begin securing the crew. He stepped out of the elevator, this time raising the Captain.

"Captain Shepard! I have the men scouring the ship looking to round up any crew members and get them to a safe location before they return to me for further instruction. We'll be here awaiting your arrival and further orders." He made his way to the front of the ship, finding Arryn in her seat working furiously on the controls. "I have them on the move but I would appreciate some more insight on the situation. What's going on out there, Ma'am?"

    Phantom

    Uh, I didn't do it
This certainly wasn't what Kain expected.

Of all the things, maybe a small skirmish, a traitor here or there, but this.

That was a lot of damage done in less than a few minutes.

And he learned he really really liked that turret.

He'd never used one before this. Sure he'd done some basic artillery work, but this turret was nothing like the ones he'd been trained to use. Krogan turrets were heavy, even for a krogan. This, while still heavy duty machinery...

He decided then and there that he wanted one. He might have to have a discussion with the Little Shepard later.

The shuttle landed and he caught a glimpse of the team, looking a little worse for wear, but still alive. He approached the door, feeling the eyes of the asari at his back. It was time to be a krogan.

There was only about twenty or so feet from the ground. He nodded before simply walking off the shuttle. He landed like a falling tank, a solid thud echoing as he made contact with the ground. He rose and turned to his Captain.

    "Shepard," he said simply.

"What. The. fluff?" Alice exclaimed as the elevator to the main floor opened and she saw their welcoming committee. Four Cerberus Centurions on the overhead balcony behind the thick glass railing armed with mattocks and trained on them. Two Guardians were below them blocking the front door, armed with revenant light machine guns and their massive tower shields. Several Alliance soldiers, officers and servicemen were on the floor dead, massacred by these monsters of men. Both sides had more on the way. Alice, Vex and Kenzi had to get out of here now and get back to the ship so they could get a better idea of what was happening. But they'd have to shoot their way out.

Vex attempted to move out and draw the enemy fire but got barely a yard before being pinned down by the revenant and mattock fire. Kenzi and Alice took cover on either side of the elevator's doorway and hacked it so it remained locked and open. Neither could get anything more than a haphazard shot and Alice lost her shields when she tried to use her biotics.

"I hate shields!" Vex shouted as he started to fire off at the troopers with his avenger. The crate he was crouching behind was marked 'FRAGILE' and Alice couldn't help but wonder what was inside. In her mom's old stories any crate marked "fragile" ended up being empty and poorly made. A few she was able to shatter with her fists even. Vex's needed to hold up better or he'd be dead.

"Quit your complaining" Kenzi yelled back. The centurions were starting to move down as more troops stormed in to give them covering fire. As one of the Centurions was dropping down, Kenzi released a shot and was able to hit him in the boot, igniting his thruster fuel and setting one of the guardians aflame. Alice stopped for a moment to watch him burn, the turned her attention to the other guardian who was still advancing. All four Centurions were still alive and moving up. Vex was able to clip one in the shoulder and they all took cover in response. Alice had never fought Cerberus up close like this before and she had to give them credit. They were excellent troops who used complimentary firepower, tactics and teamwork to trap and destroy their enemies.

The squad decided to get creative. They started taking out the troops one at a time, Vex whittling down their shields and Kenzi taking kill shots with her rifle. Alice paved the way with her powers. She picked out a soldier, set her omni tool to emit an overload charge and fry his shields. The burst of electricity would stun the man, fry his shields and burn out his thermal clip, leaving him stunned and helpless for her squadmates. The going was slow and harrowing but they were able to move up after a few minutes, Vex and Alice proving covering fire for Kenzi to move up. Vex kicking away a final grenade to destroy a plant in the corner ended the fight. Once they got the doors open the shuttle was there to greet them. It was about twenty feet in the air and getting ready to land when Kain simply walked off and landed like a brick.

"Shepard." He said, his tone as if they had run into each other in a corridor. Alice simply nodded, too out of breath to say anything else. It had been a long time since she'd been in frontline combat, most of her N7 duties being support, hacking or comm duties.

"Hey, Captain. Shuttle is here, ready and waiting." Sweetwater radioed. Kenzi waved the smoke away from her cig as Artemis and Kain moved towards her.

Vex put a hand on Alice's shoulder, seeing that she was a little shaken and his touch reassuring her. "You're alright, Shepard. Come on, we have more work to do."

    "That we do." Kenzi said.

"Right." Alice said with a last few pants. She wiped some blood from her helmet's visor with the back of her hand, then stood tall. "Let's get to it then. We've got a high-priority package in the sub-basement to protect but we've also got to rally the Alliance forces, signal the fleet for help, and stabilize that space station the Phoenix hit. It's in geosynchronous orbit right above us and if it crashes the entire planet is screwed."

"Already took care of that ma'am." Sweetwater said. "We were able to land on the station and Artemis was able to hack the fusion torches to stabilize its orbit. Sensors show it's being evacuated now."

"Well that's good. That'll make our job..."

"Captain Shepard!" Crixus' voice came in over Alice's comms, tense and serious. Just like a battle-ready turian. "I have the men scouring the ship looking to round up any crew members and get them to a safe location before they return to me for further instruction. We'll be here awaiting your arrival and further orders. I have them on the move but I would appreciate some more insight on the situation. What's going on out there, Ma'am?"

"Crixus, I need you to get my ship off the ground and into this flight. Offload the marines and have them reinforce our position, then have Arryn break orbit and fire off a mayday to the fleet. If you don't this Cerberus fleet WILL overrun this base and all of Scott and if Scott falls Eden Prime has no government and no chance. Once you've done that make sure that space station really is stabilizing its orbit and lead a search party to sweep the station for any more survivors. Get them onto the Liberator if you have too but look for any other ships they can use and get them planetside. Once you've offloaded them get back airborne and rendezvous with any surviving Alliance ships. Help them get these bastards off this planet. Do you understand all of that?"

While Alice, Crixus and the rest of the Alliance forces were trying to organize a defense a Cerberus cruiser broke through their crippled defenses and entered the atmosphere. Its hull was ablaze with the fires of reentry as it hurtled like a meteor straight towards the center of Scott. Huge ventral thrusters and mass effect fields activated to prevent it from being destroyed but it still landed as a half-kilometer long burning hulk. Its landing crushed an office building, sent cars and civilians flying in all directions and kicked up a cloud of dust and debris that covered eight blocks. When the dust cleared and terrified crowds stopped to watch a massive explosion tore a hole in the crusier's belly and a purple wave of death poured out. The ship was a one giant transport for test-tube grown Reaper soldiers stolen, created or paid for by Cerberus. Hundreds of husks, dozens of scions and over fifty adjutants, the monsters Cerberus specially made to take Omega during the Reaper War, poured from the cruiser and spread all over the city. The crowds were slaughtered in terror and the few police, mechs and Alliance soldiers who tried to stop them were also slaughtered in terror. Cerberus had just created a fire that would consume the entire city if it wasn't stamped out quickly. On top of the soldiers and ships already keeping the Alliance in disarray things looked very grim.

Joe was in the mess hall when word of the explosions spread through the Liberator. He quickly ran back to the Comm room. He listened in on communications throughout the Alliance in the area. Naturally, he listened for Shepard's first and was relieved she was alive. He rushed to the console and attempted to signal the distress beacon. It would not activate. Panicking slightly, he activated the comms.

"This is Communications Officer Joseph Newman of the Liberator. Eden Prime is being attacked by Cerberus. Repeat, Cerberus. Requesting immediate assistance."

He watched the signal's transmission strength on a monitor. It was too low. By the time the nearest fleet received the transmission, the battle would be over. Joe didn't want to think about what that could mean. Instead, he began thinking. He knew that the Liberator was the most up-to-date ship in the area. If its comms couldn't do it, none of the ships could.

Joe realized a solution. Ships did not have the most powerful communications systems available. Planets did, because planets were no restricted by space and size. He would have to go on the ground, to the base, and find the communications uplink terminal. And hope the room wasn't a burning mess.

Joe put on his explorer armor and grabbed an M8 Avenger from the armory. He activated his helmet's comms.

"Commander Alice Shepard, this is Comm Officer Joseph Newman. I am heading groundside. If I can reach the underground communications uplink, the signal should be strong enough to broadcast nearly instantly to the nearest fleet."

The ground team, now joined by Artemis and Kain, was planning strategy while the battle for the air base was going on all around them. Everywhere small pockets of Alliance and Cerberus soldiers were engaged in firefights but the Alliance soldiers were confused and disorganized. Almost half their strength was base personnel in fatigues with sidearms. The marines were using whatever weapons they were on patrol with or could get to. Some men were using their avenger rifles after the gun turrets or anti-aircraft guns they were manning were destroyed. Others were stuck in protracted engagements and already low on thermal clips. Some were down to their omni-tools and a few men simply dropped their weapons and ran. The air patrols over the base had been shot down or driven off and most of the scorpion tanks, hammerheads and makos had been destroyed. They had all been lined up bumper to bumper and were easy targets for Cerberus shuttles and fighters. Anyone who tried to get to the remaining vehicles was killed.

Alice knew they were in trouble but she began to feel it when a tank less than twenty feet in front of the shuttle was destroyed. It had been slugging it out with two atlases when a squad of Cerberus soldiers flanked it. The tank tried to intercept them but its barriers had been taken down by the atlases and was taking heavy fire. The top gunner was killed before he could fire a shot, already distracted by more soldiers on the other flank. The Cerberus soldiers climbed on top of the tank and threw two grenades into the open turret. Alice knew it was a bad sign when the front view port shattered and fire streamed out of it in a great orange jet. The soldiers, a mix of troopers with harrier rifles and veteran centurions with mattocks, were advancing on her position now.

"Everyone get ready! We've got company!" She shouted. The atlases were noticing them now and lumbering towards them. That's when the squad noticed the alliance shuttle and started hammering it with rounds. The flashes of the kinetic barrier covered the shuttle in blue ripples and shot from an atlas autocannon make it shake violently.

"Everyone! get inside! Now!" Alice shouted. "Sweetwater! Get the hell out of here! You're taking way too much heat to extract us safely!" She herded everyone back inside the base but when she tried to seal the door she found it was jammed. They'd have to retreat deeper, behind the benches and ad signs of the atrium they just fought their way out of, in order to establish a defense. And they'd be on their own until help arrived. Everything between the Liberator and them had become a killing field and if the Liberator's marines tried to cross on foot they'd be slaughtered.

"Crixus! Hold off the marines! They'll never make it to us on foot! Vex, Kezni, Kain and Artemis are here with me! That should be enough to...!"

"Commander...cer Joseph Newman. I am hea...dside. If...underground communications uplink...be strong enough to...nearest fleet." Joe's connection was bad and she only got some of the transmission. Cerberus had a jamming device that not even the Liberator's state-of-the-art comm system could crack and that was a very bad sign. Alice wondered if Crixus could hear her at all. Alice hunkered down behind a bench and tried to adjust her hardsuit radio. "Joe, I didn't get all that! I need you to repeat your transmission!"

"Shepard, Cerberus is using a powerful jamming signal to block Alliance transmissions and is protecting it with several thousand anti-hacking programs. One and I are attempting to compensate."

"SKOUT? How are you coming in clear then?"

"There is a Quantum Entanglement Communicator between your hardsuit's computer and myself. You and I may communicate at leisure."

"I really wish somebody had told me that."

"Perhaps I should also tell you of my plans to harvest the human population of Earth for genetic material." Alice was not amused and allowed several seconds of dead air to communicate this. "That was a joke."

"Not the time SKOUT. Can you patch me in with Joe?"

"I can do so temporarily but the Cerberus jamming device must be located and destroyed to fully restore communications. Constant Air Base's communications equipment will allow you to locate it but doing so requires direct interface with the scanning system in the command center. Comm Officer Newman has volunteered to attempt this. The scanning equipment was damaged in the thermite explosion by the Cerberus mole so someone will also need to repair it. Roki, One or my mobile platform would be suited for this task. I have temporarily restored communications. I recommend you contact the crew member of your choice."

"Joe! Roki! Get suited up and get to us on foot! Jaeger and the marines will give you an escort! Then get my ship airborne and fire off a mayday! Go!"

Roki sat alone on a crate in the lower areas of the engine room, contemplating his decision to come aboard. Ever since takeoff he had regretted the decision. He didn't feel comfortable around any of these people. They all served the same purpose, yet he felt nothing in common. He knew he was socially awkward, but this was something else. All he wanted was to be alone. He had found a good spot. It was isolated, with only the engines for company. The dull hum of the ship's systems was his only company. Here, he was alone with his thoughts; his favourite place to be. Roki couldn't help but wonder why exactly he was here. Of all the people in the galaxy, why him? He was nothing special, was he? He was quarian, that much was true, and it seemed any quarian was instantly perceived to be more tech savvy than they actually were just for being born so. He was good with machines, for sure, n one could question that. There weren't much better among the quarians. Yet Roki couldn't help but feel out of place.

And what was with this Eden Prime mission? Roki knew he was here as part of the support staff, and that meant he would not be kept in the loop. He wasn't high-ranking enough to be informed on the plans. Yet he could't conceive any possible reason why Eden Prime would be a first stop. He had been sitting there for a couple of hours. He knew the Captain was planetside, although he had no idea why. Most of the soldiers were down there as well. He could feel himself drifting off, when his omni-tool burst into life. Shepard's voice came through loud and clear. "Joe! Roki! Get suited up and get to us on foot! Jaeger and the marines will give you an escort! Then get my ship airborne and fire off a mayday! Go!"

That did, to be fair, answer most of Roki's questions about how it was going. He knew it wouldn't take long for plops to hit the fan, but in the very first day at the very first stop? It exceeded even Roki's pessimistic expectations. He sighed, and stood. "C-copy," he muttered into the comms. He set off at a surprising pace towards his room, where he put the few attachable armor plates that he had onto his suit. Shoulder pads, knees and elbows, thighs. His torso was already protected by the suit. He gave his visor a wipe, and attached his M3 Predator to his hip. He assumed he would be doing some sort of specialist work or they would have called for marines, not him and the Comm Officer, so he grabbed his toolkit and slung the bag over his shoulder. They were specialist equipment, rather than the standard issue crap they had in the engine room.

Roki shared the lift with three other marines. They all looked young; too young to die for sure. If Shepard was in as much trouble as it seemed over the comms, then that was a terrifyingly real possibility. When the lift opened at the shuttle bay, the Joe was already present, as was Frank. Roki nodded and went over to his locker, where he retrieved his shotgun and put it in place on his back. A handful of marines had assembled, each armed with Avenger assault rifles, and the worried look on Jaeger's face didn't do anything to calm his already frantic nerves. He looked down at his hand and noticed he was shaking. Not a good look for a man about to rush into the heat of battle. Roki cursed himself and his inability to say no in his head, and prayed that the humans in front of him couldn't see the sheer panic on his face through his yellow visor. He tried to sound confident when he spoke, but wasn't sure if it carried through. "Ready when you are."

The marines assembled quickly; there were ten of them, not counting Jaeger. Jaeger had a very nervous look on his face and it caused the rest of the marines to look a bit anxious as well. Certainly, it did nothing to calm Roki or Joe, who were much less battle hardened than these marines.

"Ready when you are." Roki said, trying and failing to disguise the panic in his voice. Truthfully, none of them were really ready because all of them knew that some of them would die. Jaeger apparently decided that now would be a good time to at least try to get his men to not hate their life choices.

"Alright men, here's what's going to happen. We're going to open that shuttle bay door and fight our way to Commander Shepard. We are to make sure that we keep these two," he pointed to Joe and Roki, "alive by any means necessary. Now, I don't pretend to know what all of you signed up for. But, if killing Cerberus scum and saving millions of lives wasn't one of the reasons, I can't say I want to know." The spirit of the troops lifted noticeably; Jaeger seemed to have got to them.

"Now, I want two men on either side of the door as we open it. If it's clear, we move out. If there's Cerberus... we'll just have to fight our way through. I want diamond formation; eyes 360. We can't be surrounded; we can't stop moving. Positions!"

Everyone got into position, with some of the marines practically dragging Joe and Roki to where they thought would be the safest location. Within moments, the doors opened. The four marines stationed around it peered diligently in all directions; seeing nothing. Joe thought it was the longest minute of his life. An all-clear was said as they moved onto the exposed landing pad; they got into formation and began jogging toward their objective.

Naturally, everyone knew that this was too easy. About one quarter of the way through the landing pad, they heard a strange sound. Within about twenty seconds, they knew the cause: six Cerberus Assault Troopers jetpacked their way onto the pad. Gunfire broke out on every side; there were two in front of them, two to the left of them, and two to the right. The assault troopers didn't have cover, but their armor was definitely superior to what the Marines had.

The cacophony of bullets filled the air as all the guns fired out of sync. Joe was shuffling, trying to keep his fire as steady as possible while keeping up with the pace. Joe glanced around; the two assault troopers who were in front of them had already been killed. Joe figured that Jaeger had ordered some focus fire in order to make sure they had a clear route to the goal. They increased their pace to a practical run; Joe noticed one marine dead on the ground.

They reached the entrance to the base, taking cover with three remaining assault troopers shooting at them. Joe hadn't previously noticed they'd killed a third one. "Logan, Jimenez, you two stay here." Jaeger looked at Logan's grenade launcher. "Collateral damage is acceptable. Understood? Good. Hold them off. The rest of us, we have to continue!"

The group, three fewer now than when they began, continued down a narrow hallway. As soon as the first man turned a corner, a grenade was thrown and a hail of gunfire erupted. The man was immediately killed. A marine took a position on the corner and threw two grenades, one right after the other, down the hallway. The explosions seemed to shake the floor, yet Cerberus kept up its suppressing fire. They had to think up a solution quick.

Joe spoke up. "We could blow this wall with thermite; create a path into another room. What's this hallway look like?"

"A string of offices!" yelled the marine holding the corner

"We could go office to office, clearing the way of Cerberus. Instead of fighting on their terms."

"Bryant, you're the demolitions expert. You got thermite?"

    "Never leave home without it"

    "Then get to work."

Bryant applied the thermite to the wall; it looked like gray glue as he applied it into a large rectangle. He told everyone to clear a few feet as a safety protocol; then, with a press of a button, the wall exploded in one burst of energy, yet the explosion only actually affected the wall. There was a space between that wall and the next room, for some reason. Bryant got about setting up a second thermite detonation. Jaeger and another marine stood on either side of the first exploded wall with a grenade in hand.

Bryant stepped back behind Jaeger; as soon as the wall exploded, Jaeger and the marine threw the grenades in.As soon as they exploded, all the marines except for the one holding the corner rushed into the room and quickly dispatched of the Cerberus forces, who were dazed, confused, or dead. If any of them appeared dead, well, they received an extra shot into their skull just to be sure. They advanced down multiple rooms that way, rendering Cerberus's defensive positions useless. If the Cerberus soldiers in the hallway turned to defend themselves, then the marine still back at the corner had an easy shot.

The soldiers at the end of the hallway fell back to the last room before the elevator. It was a large room, with lots of cover in the form of crates and reinforced railings. It seemed that there were at least twenty-five Cerberus soldiers in the room. The marines, Joe, and Roki took up positions in cover. Jaeger sent half of the marines to attack via their right flank while he led the other half along the left flank.

The fighting was intense. It was an extreme challenge to aim for a shot due to the amount of bullets flying through the air at any given time. Joe completely lost track of Roki due to being so involved in ensuring that he himself stayed alive. The Marines fought valiantly despite being outnumbered; Cerberus troops were dying despite their best efforts. It was around this time that the Marine to Joe's left was shot in the head and instantly died. Joe was certain that his heart dropped into his stomach. He saw Jaeger mumble "Damn it all" under his breath.

Cerberus's soldiers, perhaps not realizing the objective of the marines, abandoned the left flank. They took up stronger defensive positions covering the flank which prevented cross-fire from the right flank. The marines on the right flank re-positioned near Jaeger.

The elevator was a few feet away from them, but was in the open and exposed. "Okay, I want two smoke grenades between Cerberus and that elevator. As soon as the smoke goes out, I'll make a run and call the elevator. Every soldier needs to lay down heavy suppressing fire. Okay. Smoke... deploy!" Two of the marines threw smoke grenades; another, perhaps acting on his own initiative, threw a flashbang stun grenade. All the marines realized this and shielded their eyes.

As the smoke deployed, Jaeger made a bid for the elevator. The flashbang erupted; seconds later, all the marines, Joe, and Roki fired at the soldiers in a vast hail of bullets. They ducked their heads, but there were a few who took shots into the smoke knowing something had to be going on. Jaeger pressed the button and made a desperate dive for cover. Joe noticed a bullethole in his shoulder producing generous amounts of blood.

"Damn those bastards! Okay, Joe, Roki, as soon as that elevator comes down, you run for it. Half of my marines will go with you. The rest of us will cover..." he said, before coughing up blood. Joe hadn't noticed a second bullethole in his right pectoral. "you." Joe wasn't satisfied that half of the remaining marines really meant there would only be three of them. The doors opened; the marines opened fire in another attempt to suppress Cerberus. The three escorts got up and opened fire as well; Joe and Roki made a break for the elevator as Cerberus was distracted. They shot from the elevator at the troops as the marines rushed in. They quickly pressed the button, and started their descent.

Joe hesitated to think about how much further they had to go.
