    I can relate. my friend says I act like a 14 year old about gaming. I'm older than middle age, not as old as grandma, but I cut loose with Skyrim almost every day.

    Alchemy?

    If you are in sneak mode, you can get right close to fish and insects for easier pickings. Of course, you can't sneak when underwater, but if you are in the shallows, those river betties don't have a chance. Also, you'll find fish under the dartwings and can harvest both.
