    I currently have Lydia in bonemold hat, gloves and boots and ebony armor and weapons. This comes with the added advantage that she stands out in a melee so I can shoot bandits instead of her.

    I had this problem. I cannot remember if it's an objective or a quest, but there is something like find an amulet of arkay for someone, or find some random object for some random NPC.
