Baah, my game froze three times in a row while leaving a building, and I'm getting antsy with the RPing style when I'm so used to fast traveling. I think it's time I gave this game a break.

I took a break for a few months, it was the best thing. if this is your first time RPing then maybe instead of not using fast travel, allow your self to use the carriage, that way your still immersed, also it takes some use to when first RPing, just ease into it.

It's a big hammer.
Do you have a save that's from before entering the building that's freezing when you exit? I had a character, my namesake, that was really high level, and I got caught in a trap in my Hearthfire home. I was buzzing around my home doing stuff and saving when I thought pertinent. Then while I was in the basement, I tried to leave, and it froze. I tried exiting the basement like, 5 times and it kept freezing. I uploaded an older save, but the damn thing kept freezing. I tried everything I could, but something had happened and the game hated me. I had to ultimately delete the character.

So perhaps something similar is going on here? Do you have a save that goes far enough back before you entered the area?

Also, for your RP woes... loosen your rules up if you're finding them too constricting! It's entirely up to you and nobody will judge you if after going to High Hrothgar once, you never ever walk there again and only fast travel to the top of that gods forsaken mountain. It's all about making it fun. Taking a break can't hurt, either.

I've played a lot of 'no fast travel' builds in the past and guess what? I cheated all the time. Don't beat yourself up if/when you cheat. Even if you just walk half way to where you are going and fast-travel the rest of the way, it's still a win. :)

Regarding the freeze-ups, all I can suggest is to turn off auto-saves and streamline your inventory as much as possible.

Another thing (besides the good advice posted above) would be to make a second character who is rather 'chaotic', to allow yourself a bit of a respite from the RP character.

For example, I made a character named Kjarnir the Bloody who roams about the land pillaging, stealing, fighting, exploring and generally doing as much chaotic nonsense as he can. Sometimes he explores caves, sometimes he does bounty quests, sometimes he hides along the road from Rorikstead to Whiterun and mercilessly attacks travellers. Sometimes he uses a bow, sometimes he uses 2-handed weapons, etc etc etc... He is a welcome bit of chaos from my other more 'serious' RP character(s), and when I'm tired of roaming around like a crazed sociopath, I can go back to my regular character and find them fresh again.

Hope this helps you! :)

When in doubt, follow the fox.
If you're freezing on either of the DLCs "property" you might try reloading the DLC. It doesn't cost anything.

We all know Skyrim is a very glitchy game. To a certain extent, there's nothing you can do about it. However, there are a few things you can do to prevent your game from freezing.

First of all, Skyrim doesn't always remove dead bodies. Sometimes, when I kill somebody and return to that place a few days later, the dead bodies are still there. Sometimes the bodies are gone but the equipment is left behind. Have you ever seen an axe floating in the air? Or a sword? That's where the problems occur.
Since this equipment doesn't disappear, everytime when you go to a place Skyrim has to load the game environment plus the items laying around. Over time, this causes your game to freeze and get glitchy.
So dropping items you don't need on the floor, is not a smart thing to do. Instead, go find a container and leave them there. The same thing goes for dead foes. Loot them so their weapons aren't laying around on the floor anymore, and put them back on the bodies or a nearby container.

If you have lots of different saves, that could cause a game to freeze too. Make sure to clear a few older saves now and then. If you wait doing this for too long, you have to go through lots and lots of files when you eventually decide to do this. And that takes more time than you want to put into this. Go back to the oldest saves, since you are less likely to need them in the future than the more recent ones.

Also, ALWAYS exit the game correctly. I am a lazy person and often just turn my console off. But that can corrupt a save file. When you want to stop playing, save your game and go back to the main menu. Then you can turn your console off or (in case you own an Xbox, like me) go to your Xbox dashboard.

Thank you all for the advice. I did take a short respite which seemed enough. I'm actually starting to enjoy the no fast travel rule, as I'm seeing a lot more Skyrim and it's forcing me to be creative about the routes I take. For instance I was trying to get to this cave but one of many mountain ranges was in my way. After trying to climb and failing and then running into a sabertooth which smoked me and sent me back to my last save point, I examined the map and saw if I followed the river all the way around the mountains, I could get there easier. I have been using the carriage rides and found that does break it up a bit. Also have zero hours waiting so far in the stats. Those are my main concessions to RPing so far, as really getting a strict story down for my character hasn't really happened, as I enjoy doing random plops too much to really nail down a story for her. Add to the fact that she is heavy armor, two handed weapon, Companion soon to be werewolf female Khajiit, and I'm messing with the lore enough already.

As for the freezing issue, I took my game out and cleaned it and that seemed to help a little. Still froze once since then, but no more exiting issues.

game freezing has litle to do with the disk, and the reason i say that is because my copy of skyrim is a digital version only, thanks to the xbox game market, and it still freezes just as much as when i first bought the disk brandnew. personaly i think it's more of a bug or glitch than an actual flaw in the disk. but cleaning disks can help, it may even make you go longer b4 freezing, but freezing will happen, I've learned to save often.

The game freezes for me after long playtimes.

I mean, I don't play as much as I used to, but now when I do; I keep going, we're talking 4-8 hour game periods.

The game crashes usually when exiting a building or when an extreme amount of particle effects come into play. Only after a few hours of playing.

Then again...the amount of mods I have are extreme....

Imo, freeze-ups are just an occupational hazard to playing games of this magnitude and complexity. They really don't bother me at all unless they become excessive, which they never have for me. But I take measures:

-No auto-save
-Streamlined inventory at all times
-Save often, especially before any load screen
-New saves always, deleting a majority of the old ones as I go
-If I'm traveling across the region outside and I'm running a lot, I'll stop and let the game 'catch up', pick some flowers or catch some fish for a couple minutes, save, then resume running

No idea which of those factors truly make a difference, if any, but I rarely get freeze-ups.

I play on PS3 and do pretty much all this too. The biggest thing that helped for me was disabling auto saves. Load time has been cut. Some loads take only a few seconds now. I only keep three saves, and could probably do two. I don't use horses often, and find if running there is lag as the game 'catches up'. It is worse where it is snowing or around Riften, I think because of the leaves falling.

You're not alone in that. The graphics are amazing, most immersive I ever seen. And that's it..

The rest of Skyrim is made by people that obviously didn't care about entertainment values and even less about gameplay. They didn't cared enough to leave a job half done.

So every now and then I play it to level 10, after that, it's more time consuming than actual fun. That is, to say, to me.
