Starting bonuses to magical skills, 25% magic resist at all times and the Dragonskin ability allowing you to absorb magicka from hostile spells, lore and history of Breton mages.

For the record, people don't always choose Breton for battlemages; Altmer, Dunmer, Imperials are popular choices.

Basically for the reasons AS88 said.

I always choose Altmer though. Bretons are WAYYYY too short for me. I feel so tiny and unimportant when I play one, especially because the first one I picked was for a warrior type (I don't match race to style a lot). He wore heavy armor.... but he just didn't look intimidating or tough, rather amusing really.

Granted though, I'm used to playing the tallest race most of the time.

Yeah, I'm not sure why Bretons are so short.

My first male Breton didn't last long due to him being "vertically challenged." I'm 6'2" so being small was very new to me :p

Yep I have no idea. Poor little guys. Damn you're 6'2"? Good for you! If I was a guy I'd want to be really tall. On my German side everyone is huge, on my Italian side everyone is so tiny. So I ended up right in the middle at 5'5" thank god.

Yeah, hence the college basketball :p That's a really cool family history, I'm all from the north of England which sounds really boring in comparison. A few of my cousins on my mum's side are about 6' and my granddad was probably 6' but I don't think anyone on my dad's side are that tall. Just lucky I suppose :)

Perkless in Skyrim

Bad to the Dragonbone.
It's also likely because they're just naturally good at being Battlemages. Similarly, Orcs and Nords make great warriors. Khajiit and Argonians make good thieves, etc. I often stereotype my characters to take advantage of all their strengths so my Altmer are generally mages and my Bretons typically use magic along with fighting or thieving. Unless you like to role-play something that steps outside the mold, I think most people tend to do this.

Does your German side piss off your Italian side, by buttering all the noodles before anybody can put "gravy" on them? :p

AS88 and Giggitypact covered my reasons already. Can't beat magic resistance. It's 25%, rather than the 50 of individual elements, but it's all of them. Keeps you alive much longer. Throw in the Lord stone and the Mara quest, and you're at 65% resistance, without even using enchantments.

The magic resistance is probably the biggest reason for the popularity of Bretons.

1. Magic Resistance is very important in Skyrim, because the most challenging enemies in the game typically favor magical attacks. Dragons, Dragon Priests, Vampires, Warlocks etc.. Draugr Deathlords being the exception here.

2. Magic Resistance is quite hard to come by IMO. There's the Lord Stone, Agent of Mara, 2 equipment slots (necklace and ring) and Alteration perks.

As a side note, I'm happy to have found a mod in Steam workshop that gives Orcs 25% passive magic resistance like they had in Oblivion.

Shields, too :) Although I suppose that would (usually) be less applicable to a battlemage.

Ah, yes. I always forget about shields, because I never use them. Useless, dead-weight pieces-of-thalmor-droppings.

Oh, but you are missing out. Especially at very early levels, such as getting out of Helgen, the pre-attack shield bash can save your life, repeatedly.

Nah, don't think I'm missing out. I've tried Sword n' Shield before. Honestly, the shield felt like dead weight to me. It was just hanging there, doing nothing. Blocking hits with it didn't really seem to reduce damage, and I can bash with a Two-hander, so...
I just prefer more offense, so fights don't take all day.

Whatever blows your skirt up, I suppose, although if it's just "hanging there," it might explain why it doesn't seem to reduce damage. You have to pick it up and hold it in front of the oncoming blow.

My friend's main character is a Breton, but not a magic user much at all. He's pretty much a mele-warrior type. I thought this interesting as it seemed contrary to the strengths of the race, but he said the natural magic resistances were excellent in overcoming what is typically a characteristic weakness of a warrior type and that is defense of magic attacks. Made pretty good sense actually.
