So you have played Skyrim, but don't really like it?

If the answer to this question is, yes.. then the thread is over. You don't like it, we do.

/thread.

This exchange was quite fun to watch, but I have, unfortunately, lost a little faith in the Skyrim community in the process.

Cut our losses and just laugh it all over? :)

It takes two to make a thing go right, by Ivaan-nicklepoor

It was around high noon when i exited the dark tavern, but on which day this sun indicated, I could not tell. I was preoccupied with my sequestration, speaking to a tavern wench about the same subject for five weeks, and the results were apparent already- I was a master of both persuasive and provocative speech. I mounted shadowmare, who I have not fed for at least three weeks now, and we went towards the main quest line. "Well, aren't i an idiot!" I said while giving myself a full-force face palm with daedric gloves on, "I forgot about fast travel!" I brought up my map, which had the place usefully marked on it, and teleported there.

When I got there, an Argonian woman ran at me screaming. I immediately punched her when she got close, sending her multiple feet back before she finally crumpled into a ball and died. I could say it was self defense, but as a Redguard, I was subtly racist towards Argonians. Kind of like the black guy from Lakeview Terrace. I decided not to save the world, since one less Argonian was award enough. I was sent a few complaints about that choice, but I am the Dovahkin crying out loud, I do what I do and take what I want!

Does anyone else think that this thread has gotten a little out of hand. Just try to give him some good reasons for playing Skyrim :D

And Ivaan, you have some writing talent, just try not to direct it towards mocking the people of these forums, OK?

It is curious that, if this was a potential buyer of the game that may have seen some design flaw, we could not collectively come to terms that maybe the game did have a slight shortcoming and, from there, use the collective agreement to come up with some possible benefits that would outweigh the shortcoming.

At least attempt to quantify why we like the game. Just a few small minor irkings that I'll get over by tomorrow, I'm sure :)

Perkless in Skyrim handled it quite nicely though. You, yourself, did a nice job making the 'Q' connection. Melee was commendable.

The point of the thread is to try and show Ivaan why Skyrim is like D&D in an RPG sense, ad that was what he specified in the OP.

If he really wanted to annoy people, he would just have had to say that:

Skyrim is a terrible game and anyone that plays it deserves to have their eyeballs gouged out with a spoon.

But did he? No. He asked a valid question and I'm waiting for some people to let their automatic reaction to such posts go and realise the question that he is asking.

When I play forumrim, I play on EXTREME difficulty

I think it's stupid to even compare a role playing game you play around the kitchen table with a video game. Of course in the video game world there are restrictions. You can't do everything! How do you even begin to code that?! Also there are hardware and technology constraints, please remember Xbox was made in 2006 and it's hardware was developed in 2004/5. I think even trying to compare the two shows how little you understand the two mediums. It's like comparing apples with oranges. do you see the problem here?

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away I was an avid D 'n D player. If you are fully equipped with an imagination and have a strong desire to BE your character, no video game will ever match the epic awesomeness that a room full of imaginative friends can create in an average D 'n D session IMHO.

That being said, I still play and enjoy Skyrim very much. Morrowwind was my intro into TES games, followed by Oblivion leading to well....here. Even though you are being 'led' through the game, there is still a feeling of freedom and the ability to steer clear of the quests which leaves you free to explore and discover a very beautiful map.

No video game will ever be an adequate substitute for a great imagination, but Skyrim does a pretty good job!

I don't mind people "not" liking Skyrim. I kind of wonder why SO Many people do. Anytime anyone would ask me about The Elder Scrolls series, I would say, "It's not for everybody". That's why it suprized me when it got so popular. (Of course I am a very very old school TES fan)

But to have an argument that Skyrim is too Linear is alittle strange to me. After reading this Thread, I'm honestly trying to think of what would be even more Open Sandboxy in the market today and I can only come up with Minecraft and Minecraft is not an RPG game of course.

Now if you are purley compairing Skyrim to Table-top D&D on being expansive, it's like saying "Fire is not hot enough. Yeah sure it's hot, but It's not the sun!"

TES Series is, by far, the only game franchise trying to be as expansive as techology and time can produce. If they have the complete power to make it even more expansive, they would... and will in the future. The thing is, Developing and programming a game like Skyrim isn't like waving a wand.

BUT, I will say that one of my love's of the franchise (Not just Skyrim) is the Direction they are going and not just the one game here and there. I think if encouraged, perhaps one day TES will be the game where you can do everything you can think of in a Fantasy world.

So it might not be as open ended as playing pen and paper D&D games : BUT..Dude, the GRAPHICS are WAAAAAAAYYYY BETTER!!

To be compleatly honest, D&D was and most likely still is the First most successful RPG ever. based off of miniature wargames It started a board game, has an MMO based off it, and even console games made for it. people may not realize it, but it was one of the bigest inspirations for RPG's of all kinds in general. the newer games may limit the game, but originally it was the best because it was the only game that you could literally DO and BE anything you want because it was entirly based off the imaginations of the people you would play with. it was a game where if you couldnt think of a good monster to kill, you could just make one up. make up a place to go too off the top of your head. craft anything you could think of. games like warcraft and skyrim try to mimic idea of this, but the worlds and monsters you play in are entirely made up by the developer. in a way its is slimier but also very different. If it wasnt for games like D&D, we wouldnt have some of the high end RPG's we would have today like skyrim.

Ive never played D&D, but I do highly respect the tastes and intrest of those who do play. but Im ashamed to admit its mostly because of fear of being a D&D outcast, but now Im in the military so it would kinda equal out between bad@$$ and nerd.

I enjoy skyrim because I find the story unique and interesting, it gives me a good amount of character options, and what I want to be compared to most games ive played. and I can pretty much just fart around and do what i want. I could steal stuff, kill people. explore dungeons. Its hard to get board of a game that has so much stuff I can do.

Conan

I live, I love, I slay, and I am content...
I don't really look at it as a game. I love the world of "The Savage Sword of Conan" and Skyrim kinda lets me live in that world as Conan. Its the ONLY program that does this. I live the world of Skyrim my own way and NOT like anyone else, that's one BIG reason this "game" is so special. I have around 20 friends who have Skyrim and not one of us live it the same way. I grow so sick of games that drop me in and tell me who to be, what to do and where to go and do the same stuff everyone else does who own the same game. To me the Elder Scrolls are so much more than an RGP, their like LOW...Live your Own World...

Besides, its much better to see myself slash my enemies in half than to just roll a die and hope it comes up with the number I need to win!!!
