So i'm making my 3rd character, my first was just a one handed with shield badass, but on the regular diff settings, then i made a sneak archer on expert.. that was a blast. Now I made a mage on master.. only level 3 after tonight; but I was going to go destruction/restoration and maybe some illusion in there. While using a cheap bow/arrows just to use potions/poisons and what not to make the enemies weaker to my magic and stuff. Guess I'm just looking for some opinions, I'm liking the role playing thing, I will not power level or exploit at all. Just trying to have fun. Also I already put a point into destruction and restoration. But I will admit, it was hard clearing that first dungeon with the golden claw with only: flames/conjure familiar and healing. Not to mention I snuck past like 6 sleeping draugrs just because I didn't want a death sentence!

do whatever questlines you want and just play it as a mage and not as anything else.

what you need to do is abandon armour. its nothing. wear some good robes. novice is ok because you get them in the torture room in helgen keep. but finding apprentice robes is much better.

save your money and use it to buy spells. farengar in white run has most that ull need for a while.

stick with the conjeration spells and destruction spells.

buy bound bow. buy firebolt (the apprentice level fire spell) and ice spike. then go to the college of winter hold. save before you talk to the girl and buy her spell. if its not the spell conjure flame atronach, load your saved profile and talk to her again until the spell she sells you is cojure flame atronach. becvause its around 3-400 gold unless u buy it from her and then its 30.

then invest ALL of your level skills into magika and then level up your conjuration and destruction. eventually invest some into your health and stamina but magika is priority

get the mage stone at the beginning.

go through the college quests and get the arch mage robes which are the best. and youll get the staff of magnus

youll pick up quick and start buying stronger spells as u level up.

thats basically it. ill let u know if i find out more

Lol.... Whut?
lol yes, mages are really difficult to handle. My battlemage actually started off with Destruction, restoration, and alteration. I got her perked up with mage armor and she was able to absorb a small amount of magic damage.
However, if you're planning on using a mage, I would suggest taking advantage of the spell tomes the court wizard has to offer. Also, for a mage, joining the College of Winterhold just to get access to the various schools and tomes would prove helpful.
And I believe a follower to help keep your enemies at bay would help you until your magic is powerful enough to stand on its own.

And try to get your clothing/armor to regenerate magicka. Having your magicka bar higher than your health is helpful, so when you heal, you spend less magic.

I could go on forever about mages. My pure mage was one of my favourite characters, but my PS3 console got corrupted and I lost her. She was replaced by a battlemage out of my annoyance for the mage armor. It's a nice spell, but I kept forgetting to recast it once it ran out.

a great college follower is brelyna i think its her name. just let her cast spells at you. and then jzargo is probably the best. one of the finest on the whole game

by let her cast spells at you i mean thats all you have to do as a mission for her to follow you

My playstyle kills Brelyna each and every time she follows me off of college grounds. When I use a mage, my main goal is fighting alongside my tank, not solely protecting it. So I would prefer having someone with heavy armor. Uthgerd, Vorstag, or J'zargo all seemed suitable enough for me.

she always worked great for me, especially since she liked to summon flame atronachs. eventually though she got in my way when fighting a dragon and i decided that the dragon soul was worth more than her life. i thought she was a perfect mage type. she also gave me some neat robes when she died.
apprentice destruction i believe. but i already had apprentice restoration robes. shes also pretty good with a staff if she finds one. but i was always a cast spells from a distance. she usually did to. we had it goin pretty good for a while. but jzargo is better. i was a PURE mage though. i ended up in arch mage robes and dual casting spells

Don't know if this has been pointed out but don't get the duel casting perks until later in the game. Dual casting does 10% more damage than using two hands. Yes I said 10%, an increase from 2x to 2.2x is a 10% increase, not 20% which most people misconceive it as. To the point though, it deals 10% more damage but at 40% increased cost. It's highly magicka inefficient, hope this helps.

im Redguard and proud....XD
my first character was a mage. so it was kinda difficult at first. but like that one guy said is to invest im magicka. what i did is tried to lvl up alteration so u can get the ____"flesh" spells that allow you to have armor with out actually wearing any armor. and the mage armor perks in the alteration tree are really helpful. another thing to get like right away is. "Destruction Dual Casting" And "impact" both in the destruction skill tree. that way when you dual cast PROJECTILE destruction spells it will stagger ANY opponent Even dragons. greatly swinging the odds in your favor. one on one battles become easy. and if fighting multiple targets. thats where your alteration skill comes in with the Armor increasing spells. allowing you to take more damage before dying.
also if you just want to use destruction spells more than anything. invest in enchanting. get the perks "enchanter" 5/5. "insightful Enchanter" and Corpus Enchanter. optional "extra effect". what you wanna do is get like four grand soul gems. 1 circulet, 1 amulet, 1 clothes piece, and a ring. learn the fortify destruction enchantment. enchant the listed items. based on your enchanting skill and perks. each item should have an enchantment anywhere between 20-25% reduction on the cost of destruction. when all worn at the same time. all destruction spells will be reduced by 80-100% 100% being the spells are free. you can cast incinerate for free. and if you got the extra effect perk you can add two fortify enchantments. so you can reduce the cost of two of your favorite schools. i did restoration and destruction. so i can keep a Greater ward up. while flinging thunderbolts without having to worry about magicka.
