This upcoming console generation is going to be a big one, with the way things are looking it's going to be an impressive generation of gaming. But, what would we see next generation? Will we even have consoles? With the route we're going, it's like we're just selling PCs anyways, so will Microsoft and Sony just start making gaming rigs? Of course with different operating systems that wont eat up a lot of ram.

What do you think?

It's really too early to tell because there's so many things that I imagine will be done next-next gen. Obviously graphics will look more and more brilliant. Of course this is how a new generation begins anyways. I expect after next gen we'll get much of the same. Everything just blends together.

They aren't all that impressive actually. My two year old laptop is only beat by number of cores in the CPU, otherwise it tromps the other specs. This also wasn't a top of the line laptop so can't claim its cause I over spent.

Honestly the leaps in gaming haven't happened since the move from cartridge to disc...

The so called "next-gen" consoles are actually a few generations behind PC hardware in terms speed and accessability. For example, take the Playstation 4

PS4

Main processor - x86-64 AMD Jaguar 8 core clocked at 1.8 Ghz

This is not impressive as PC's processors of similar cores are recorded to being clocked anywhere from 3.5+ to 4.5 Ghz which is far superior to the PS4.

Don't forget about how much of the RAM and CPU in both consoles is reserved for the OS, so they're actually even weaker than you realize.

So basically, I think where we can go next is driving it into the heads of gamers and developers alike that PC gaming is superior in that everything is smoother, and you can OC much of your hardware so it performs even better, and then later upgrade it.

I looked at a Battlefield 4 PC vs PS4 comparison, and the PC still looks better, and the game just came out in the PS4's launch year. Kinda sad, considering that last generation, the PS3 and 360 were truly something great in that they were comparable to high end PCs at the time. Now... now they're just sad.

I have no doubt that the PS4 is going to age just as badly as any other console.

Compared to going backwards in time, the PS3, they've done better. The prices are said to be lower than last cycle.

Well, the last gen consoles were very competitive to the high end PC's at the time, and stronger than some as the console architecture was improving faster than the PC at the time, but with some breakthroughs in PC architecture design, the tables have turned. Personally, I find the "next-gen" consoles overpriced for what they are, especially with how the Steambox is going to become another competitor to Microsoft and Sony.

Actually they weren't comparable to PC Specs, last generation either. They fill a market for drop it in and done gamers. Most people don't want to take the time to build a great PC install the games to it, Figure out what software to use to communicate with their friends. Honestly PC and console gaming are two different markets.

You mean most people are unwilling to learn. ;)

You know it takes time for new consoles to reach their full potential graphics wise

Gaming on PCs is an extravagance that most people either don't need or cant afford. The new consoles will cost less than half the price of a decent gaming PC and don't need to be constantly upgraded to keep up with the latest games. We all know that PC gamers consider themselves to be on a higher plane than console gamers but the truth is that most console gamers have PCs and yet we choose to play on consoles because we find it a more enjoyable experience.
