I know it's random and fairly uncommon (in my experience), but sometimes an NPC with a positive disposition will give you a gift. What kinds of things have you received?

At least two different NPCs have given me the first part of the "Brief History of the Empire" series, and one time I got a pair of boots (named "Boots").
Proventus recently decided to give me Ragged Robes.

It's the thought that counts, isn't it? :)

The NPC will say something like "I'm glad we're friends..." or "I've been thinking..." and then just give you the item. But like I said, it's random and fairly uncommon.

You just walk past someone who is friendly to you, and they say something along the lines of: "Here, have this!" instead of "Greetings person I like".

I've received potions of minor magic and healing. I got one of them from the innkeeper at Falkreath who said shyly: "I know it's not much, but it's something." Narri also gave me a fine hat once saying: "To friendship! Here. If you don't like it, too bad." One time Kjeld said: "In a world full of fools and idiots, you stand head and shoulders above the rest. I want you to have this" and I got an iron sword. Then his wife apologised to me for how abrupt and unfriendly her husband was.

I read someone who once on one of his brief trips to Breezehome to dump his loot have Lydia say: "I'm glad we're friends. Here!" and gave him a ragged cap. He was convinced Lydia was subtly insulting him for never being around. This girl also had an experience with gift receiving she thought so funny she made a comic about it: http://norroen-stjarna.deviantart.com/art/Lady-Charmer-343976011

I will not tolerate failure...
I got a gift from Ondolomer the Thalmor Commander in the city of Markarth then he said that there were fewer things in life as fine as my company

polan can into space?
a guard in Riften gave me Report: Disaster at Ionith -- it didn't particularly interest me. I assumed it was deliberate since she just kind of went "here have this, and don't say I don't give you anything," haha.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
Just about anything you can think of. I've gotten weapons (all types from Iron through daedric); armours (all types except dragon & daedric); jewelry (you name it); books (a whole variety!); ingredients (I even got a Daedra Heart once!); the weirdest thing I ever got was a bunch of chaurus chitin from a smith I helped - where she got it, I have no idea since there aren't any falmer things anywhere nearby. I even got 5 cheese wheels once.

Valdr's Lucky Dagger is the only thing I really appreciate as gift. The other stuff were pretty much heritage letters. :p
