Alteration works on all levels of enemies. It has no sudden ceiling. I can use my armor, light my way, paralyze or resist magic of anything. It is a utility school that never disappoints.

Illusions job is offense and some utility. The utility of invis and muffle are nice but the rest is basically broken. No other school fails in its role as much as illusion. If you force illusion you can be very powerful combined with decent followers but it requires you to know how to break it and a concerted effort to do so. A dual-casting vampire mage with the right perks is godly, especially if he is also using sneak and backstabs.

But that is very boring for the most part. It is either mostly useless or broken to the point of boring.

No other school is this bad, though sneak is close but doesn't have the mostly useless part of the equation.

I just want to clear up one quick thing:
You do NOT need to be a vampire, have special gear, or use potions to 'max' Illusion. With perks alone, you can dual-cast and land any spell on any enemy except dragons (they're just straight immune).

I won't argue about the power or fun of the school; everyone has their own subjective views on each, and that's fine. Just didn't want anyone thinking it was overly difficult to land the spells.

So I found a funny way to enjoy Illusion again, even if just for the moment. Calm plus Poison Rune. Hit them with a few Poison Runes, Calm them before they get to you, watch the health drop. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Great way to level up Restoration too btw. I gained over one level in Restoration (65'ish to 67) by killing two forsworn with Poison Rune. That's pretty efficient.

A lot of the magical schools take way too long to become powerful so your enemies are already too strong to take on lone, or their perks stop being relevant to the class after a while. But you know what is always an effective way to dispatch the bad guys? A way you've been doing it since the beginning? Bury a motherfl*ffin axe in someone's head!

Honestly, I've never had a problem incorporating illusion into all my builds,or with its use in general. It's a useful, though limited, school.
