Hey guys!

Our forums now have a post rating system which is a more complex version of the likes system. It's pretty much self explanatory. To give it a try, hover over any post and choose which rating is the most suitable. There are both positive, neutral and negative ratings to posts.

Check out your profile or member card for stats.

I hope you all find it useful! Please vote in the poll and post your feedback. :)

(Also, a tiny feature: If you're writing a post and happen to navigate away from the page or close the browser you won't lose what you have until you publish the post.)

In my personal opinion, I could see a lot of trolling going on with this new rating system, especially with the option to let others know how horrible their grammar and spelling is. Remember, there are always Grammar Nazis lurking about at your local schools, libraries, and internets.

We will keep an eye on this. I have faith that the vast majority of our members will use the rating system as it is intended. We can also see who gave the ratings.I think that adds to a certain sense of responsibility when using them.

I am a bit of a Grammar Nazi, but only in roleplays, usually. I find this slightly... offensive? To me and other "Grammar Nazis".

Unfortunately most people can't be trusted to act responsibly, but I still like the new rating system and the pretty rainbows!!

I don't understand why people use the term 'Grammar Nazi'; it's so pointless. Anyway, I think this new system is actually pretty good because before when some liked your post, you couldn't always tell if it's funny, useful, etc.

Yes. I find it an amusing and simple title for a group of people who dislike bad grammar on the web. Myself, and four great friends of mine on another site are very much "Grammar Nazis" and like the title.

I just had a good idea- we should start a bit of a trend where people answer yes and no questions with the Agree and Disagree buttons, and explain why or why not if they want to.

In the docs for the addon, one of the uses for the expanded like system was actually to use them somewhat like an inline poll so I think what you're suggesting is definitely within the scope of the update.

This.

Do we really need a rating system where people can call each other's posts dumb? If something is good or bad let people say so in response to the post, or let them give a rep point or a like tag. I'm not particularly fond of those either. A post or thread's value speaks for itself. If someone wants to praise it or shoot it down they can respond with their own post so there's at least an observable basis to weigh the value of their assessment.

I agree. I'm not too fond of this new rating system. It was so much simpler to just LIKE a post if I really enjoyed what poster said. I suppose now, I'll simply just ignore the rating system altogether.

But that could be regarded as going slightly off-topic if you were to make a post every time that you agree/disagree with someone's statement. I agree that it would be easier to simply reply with what you think, but this isn't something that you must do, anyhow; it's just an option. If you want to reply with text then feel free to do so.

In what way would that be regarded as going slightly off-topic? It's addressing the topic.

If someone says something is X and then someone else responds by saying "no it isn't because Y" it is directly on topic and can add to the value of the thread.

If someone says something is X and then someone else says no and then just engages in ad hominems that is off-topic but it gives others a basis to disregard it as meaningless.

Clicking on an icon does none of that which is why it has the potential to not only be less than meaningful or valuable but damaging to the integrity of the forum.

It seems pretty fun. The dumb button could be removed. I wouldn't take offence and would probably giggle more though.

Dagmar - I see where you are coming from but I feel like there is more to it than simply someone opening a thread, reading it, clicking a fancy button and exiting. Clicking a button doesn't directly state your point of view. If someone doesn't have something to say then they can acknowledge they read it with a more personal touch. I would be quite thrilled to get 2 rainbows so its a whole rainbow. I want that pot of gold lol.

However, it could be a good indication of what is to follow the original post. If you see ten disagrees, you are instantly aware of the slaughter-fest that is to come. It can even be worthwhile in the guide section. Scroll down, see 20 informative/dumb then decide if its really worth the time to read four plus pages.

I don't feel like it's going to hurt the amount of meaningful posts but it most likely will cut down on the three "worder" posts. As for me, I'll always have something dumb to say.

I can serve to cut down on some of the "I agree" one liner posts that don't really add content. We can still elect to use the basic 'like' for any post and it is just as relevant. I do agree that the 'dumb' flag may require some renaming but I'm willing to see how the members at large utilize it after this initial newness wears off.

I'd rather be working on my bowling average.
The mouse hover over the different options is a little buggy - no info window pop. I have to remove my cursor over the icon that I'm hovering then re-hover. Using Win7 and Google Chrome. IE8/9 is horrible when it comes to this site. I don't like rating posts 1/2 the time. If everyone rated everyone's post then I'd be more inclined. Perhaps this is what it's meant to do.

Just my opinion. not that anyone asked ;) The new rating system by design is interactive, and gets members engaged with one another. Will we always agree? Nope BUT since I have been on this site (I read much more than I post) a vast majority of members are helpful, with a few jabs sprinkled in here and there. No harm at all...it keeps the funny bone active, too. So, let 'r rip and have fun with it ;)
