It seems that quite a few people don't really understand role-playing in Skyrim. There have in fact (not on this site BTW) been some quite hostile responses to the gamers that do play the game as a role player. The most common argument is "LOL, you like playing with yourself!" which is ironic as by playing Skyrim we are all "playing with our ourselves"! Anyway, let me explain my idea of role-playing in Skyrim. It's about actually growing with the character you create, thinking about what they would do as opposed to trying to make the 'most powerful character EVVVVAH!'. Let me give you a little example that should not give any spoilers as it is essentially the beginning of the game. I am an Orc, I'm in a strange country and steal everything that isn't glued down, not because I'm a thief but because I'm a stranger in a strange land and will do anything to survive. After becoming a Thane, I take a deep breath and reflect on my short journey that brought me here. I am ashamed of stealing and renounce it, never to steal again. It took one second of thought to make that choice, it did not require me to dress up as an orc and I grew to like my character more for it. Immerse yourself as your character, think about what happens around you, adapt to growing, not in experience points, but in experience. You will have great fun.

Great advice. I'm currently going through my first full playthrough (2nd character), that I'm making fairly powerful and seeing everything. After I'm done with the main questline (Thieves Guild done, Mage College done, Dark Brotherhood about 75% done I think, Civil War about 75% done, Main Quest about 50% done), I'll replay as a more specialized character with my own set of restrictions.

Seeing other players experience the game playing by certain limitations is intriguing and definitely opens up (ironically) more of the game.

It certainly does Mush, I played Fallout 3 to death and truly think I made the 'perfect' character. It was a hassle. Relaxing and enjoying Skyrim without any spoilers or fretting over stats (c'mon, we've all done it) makes for a much better gaming experience to me.

You are right, I love to role-play in skyrim! The game just comes to life when you do! I have always had a problem with getting bored with my characters. But ever since I started doing this a month or so ago, I have found myself getting much more attached to my character, and having so much more fun.

I try to roleplay as much as i can, like you i do an orc, some kind of barbarian with a two handed weapon and i like to forge. I think i never used a spell yet...i dislike not to say hate the magic user. I try to fix some rule for my character and try to stick to it. It make for quite a nice experience...And i often take a minute or two to think, what i should do in that situation. Without taking this too seriously, i think it greatly improve the playing exp.

I hear you. My first character was a nord hero and a bard. I collected every book I could get my hands on. Now with my orc, he has a slight drinking problem. Any cave I go into I drink all the wine, ale, mead before exiting just a wee bit sauced. And of course I stay away from quests that don't fit their character. Definitely brings a life to the game.

I used to think I had to do every quest that presented itself to me...but after being here I see that they are all really just options for different play/character styles. I can have a nice Nord hero to help the Stormcloaks and maybe become Thane of Stormcloak controlled cities, or be an evil assassin and take leadership of the DB. I can even be a poor guy and work chopping wood to make a little coin and assist townfolk when I can. The possibilities are endless and plenty to do until TES VI comes out.
